Disneyland in August

Hi everyone-

I had resigned myself to no steps on Disney property for the next couple of years, but my family is thinking of taking a trip to San Fran area this summer and suddenly a path to Disneyland, where I have never been, has emerged in my eyes.

Is Disneyland worth visiting in August? I would likely only have one park day. Is it worth making a special trip just myself ( none of my family would be interested in joining me) to experience the original park of Walt's dreams?

My mind is...mostly made up that I can't go to San Francisco and skip the $51 flight to LA, but I'm open to y'all telling me "Disneyland is terrible in August! Don't do that".

Any advice is appreciated!

Of course you should come to Disneyland.

When in August, though? August is a pretty variable month. It starts in “height of summer” and ends in “off-season.”

DLR in August is totally do-able. I have done it myself many times. You will be squeezed with one day but can have a blast. When going solo, you can really experience a lot more than with a group as you can do single rider and MaxPass.

As the PP said, early/mid/late August all have their differences. There are certain days I would avoid (like August 20-23 especially).

Any specific reason why? We are there over that period of time and need to decide which day to have as our rest day. Not sure if we should pick a week day for this or a day on the weekend.

Ooh, my trip would probably be Aug 23-25, or 22-24, so that's good to know!

Glad to hear it's doable though :)

Hopefully others will chime in. I have never been personally over that week. I just read the posts over the years and know that AP holders work around their blockouts as best they can which does lead to some crowding on certain days.

I would shoot to avoid the week and especially on Monday August 20. You may have to balance that with other rides closures like when HM goes down for the NBC overlay. That would likely be Aug 27 which means Aug 26 would be safe.

WE went August 28-31 last year it was 110 degrees on of those days miserable. Iam not sure if this is the norm the smog was bad too.

Ok so maybe I should do the 24-26?. Very helpful to know, thank you!
I would recommend hitting the weekend to get full entertainment offerings, which you won’t typically get on weekdays at that time of year (although maybe they’ll be generous with Pixar Fest). I think that Friday evening will be a NIGHTMARE, though, and Sunday might be rough, too. I might go Thursday-Saturday?

While that “first week unblocked” in August is usually nowhere near as bad as “right before the blocks” in June, I suspect that it might be worse this year since Pixar Pier opens after those APs are blocked for the summer. There is probably going to be rush to hit the Incredicoaster once they get back in...

Maybe, maybe not. The most predictable thing about DL crowds lately is how unpredictable they are...

We were also at DL during that same week last August and oh boy, was it ever hot! It was tolerable though if you stayed hydrated and found shade.

Saying that, expect late August to be quite warm. I've been that last week in August the last two years and crowds were quite low. Most schools on the area have started, which really cuts the crowds. If you can stand the heat, it's a great time to go.

For me, Disneyland is worth visiting every day of the year! If and when I have the means, I will do it too! I will suggest you getting a park hopper ticket. If you can, try to eek out a second day in the parks.

Not sure this is helpful as you are going in later August, but our last visit was the second week of August, and it was a great visit. It was typically summer busy...busy but very manageable. The weather was higher 80’s...I think we were lucky as it can be pretty warm in August. Of course we’ve been in a heat wave in early July, too, so you never know!

We were there too and I agree, miserably hot. August works good for us but I’m scared to go again that time of year

By this time, there is a risk that HM will be down to install the Halloween overlay. Also, the annual CHOC Walk (a very big fundraiser) is scheduled for Aug. 26th.

No, you should go the week before. The parks will be a nightmare of AA’s.

AA's??

It's a new thing. Haven't you heard? The Audio Animatronic characters all come to life sort of like the Walking Dead. Imagine waiting in line for rides with Captain Jack behind you singing "a pirate's life for me"!

:wizard:

LOL. I was picturing a huge Alcoholics Anonymous convention descending on the parks, but I like your answer much better! Of course, with Captain Jack, it would sort of overlap with the AA theme anyhow, wouldn't it? Or, at least, the need for AA. ;)
