I read a few books and it looks like 16 weeks out is the rule of thumb for hard core train schedule. That is next week if I calculated right.

Can I hear how others are doing on their training? Whats your regimine or routine? I had to resort to walking on a treadmill because its now over 100 degrees all the time here in Arizona (Unless I want to train at 4:30 am as I leave for work at 6am every day) I am finding it much harder to walk on a tread mill compared to outside. Has anyone else noticed that before?

Im also trying to figure out clothes to wear for the half marathon. This is my first ever to even attend much less participate in. I am not comfortable in little tight spandex shorts, Im not large but Im not small either.

I would love to hear discusssion about how its going and getting there the next few months.

My official training according to my schedule starts on the 26th. You have me wondering if I calculated that right now though...maybe I am off.

I have alot harder time on the TM! I started in Jaunary, inside on that darn thing and would get so upset because I could not sustain walking at a 15 min. mile at all. I was scared to death I was going to get swept when I got to the Minnie 15k. In April it was warm enough to finally start wogging outside. And I went much faster!

Hi,

I use John Bingham's MFM training schedule. For the half it is a 14 wk program. I am currently in week 5 of preparation for the Chicago half on Aug 13th. And that will lead me right into the DL half on Sept 17th (which is only 100 days from today!!).

I used a TM almost exclusively preparing for the WDW half in January. I am not a morning person, so getting up early before work just is not an option, and by time I get home in the evening....well in the summer it was still too hot, and in the fall too dark to be out by myself. So....I would just turn on a favorite TV show and walk away on the TM. Hey, it worked for me, but I did find that it was much easier to walk at the needed pace outside than on the TM. But I still put almost all my steps in on the TM and figured the pace work out.

Im so glad its not me walking on the TM is harder.

I started training for this outside in January. I was able to do 2 to 2 1/2 miles at about 4 miles per hour (My husband went with me and his wheel chair does 4 mile per hour at full throttle.) Then it got over 100 degrees a month ago and I could not walk out side any more. I was so worried that month off hurt me a lot. Its been about 110 outside when I get off work lately and when I go to bed still close to 100 degrees. When my friend gave me her tread mill I did 8 minutes at 4 miles per hour and I thought I would die. Every day this week I have added 2 to 3 minutes and today I wil add two more to be at 20 minutes. I hope I calculated the start right? Maybe I didnt? If I calculated right I start the marathon for mortals schedule monday (Thats the one I saw that most appealed to me in the three books I read) But I thought I better modify a bit, i dont have a cross training activity so I thought work those days a little more on the heart and lungs on the tread mill. (I have Asthma and I am taking all my meds full time and working on making me stronger there too.)

Anyway I love hearing how others are doing.

About running clothes--I don't feel comfortable in Spandex either! I went to the running store here the week before the Minnie. I was a bit embarrassed having to ask the "thin male owner" for shorts so my legs didn't rub together! He did help me find some Asics that he had that are like regular shorts on the outside and have a thin layer of breathable stretchy stuff on the inside. I love those shorts! I just went in this week to order more. It is all I run with now. They are actually in the dryer now getting ready for the Komen Race for the Cure here tomorrow! So there are some options out there for you. You could check Walmart but I think you will probably have to go to a specialty store. i haven't calculated my schedule yet.....I need to. You all are giving me a push....

For my first 1/2 mary, I tried using
Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon training method. I liked it a lot so you might want to give it a try.

For me, my training is going ok but that's only because my "big" event for this year is an Ironman race coming up a month before the Disneyland 1/2 mary.

When I run, I like to wear lycra shorts under my running shorts. It sounds unorthodox, I know, but I've been doing it for years so I'm used to it.

My official training starts this week. I have yet to decide "how" I will complete the half.

I have a 14 week program and am using John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals plans.

I will have 3 days of running or run/walking (or walking?) and 2 days of cross training with 2 days of rest.

The GENERAL rule of thumb--is to not increase your road or TM activity week to week by more than 10% per week...if you are training time only (i.e. 30 minute walks)--then you don't increas your total time by more than 10% or anyone workout by more than 10%...if you are doing distance--then you use the 10% rule on distance.

This is the least likely way to cause setbacks. And it wouldn't hurt to throw in some low distance long days--so my long days go like this...2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7, 8, 5, 9 (as an example--I don't know what it really is). This way you get *rest* weeks. You aren't really resting--you are just giving your body an easier distance.

During the week I do timed runs and on my long days--those are calculated distances.

I use race ready shorts--but will need to look into something else...the race ready shorts have pockets that are nice to stow a small camera, a room key, spare cash (good for DL since you may want a cab or something back to the hotel), and gu or equivilant.

I find running on a treadmill hard because I get so bored, I only had to do half an hour last night (which for me is mentally a short run as I used to run lots of long runs) and I spent the whole day dreading it so much because the weather was so bad here and I was going to have to run it on the treadmill, in the end I braved the wind and went outside! Mind you it doesn't help that my trainer has now put the treadmill on a 3 gradient to mimic outside - the fact that everyone else puts it on a 1 gradient to mimic outside has not escaped me.

AS for the shorts, I wear spandex and I'm not particularly thin, I just hate the way everything else rides up and pulls. I figure anyone who has little enough to do in their life than comment on the size of my butt in my running shorts, needs to get out more themselves! Helen

I agree about the boring part. I use music which helps some. It will be near 115 each day this week when I get off work so I am sure you can why I have to do it this way.

I also agree that running on a treadmill is harder then not running on a treadmill-- problem for me, though, is that I tend to run faster then I should when not on a treadmill! A heart rate monitor helps, but I still tend to push it!

I won't just wear spandex, but I do wear spandex under running shorts-- it is still comfortable, and it avoids chaffing (sp?). I see tons of people dressed like that at races!
