We have traveled to WDW many times, and we are making our first trip to Disneyland in January 2017.
Where should we stay? 2 adults, 6 kids. We will be there for race weekend so walking to the park is a must.
Onsite? Offsite? Any hotels that will sleep 8+?

Desert Inn and Suites is right across the street on Harbor. They have several different types of suites. I've never stayed there, but I'm planning to try it this summer. It's definitely a cheaper route to go then staying on site.

Camelot also has suites, but it might be a tighter fit, depending on the size of your kids.

I'm not familiar with staying on site, so other people can give you information about what that's like for a large family.

If you plan to be there on a race weekend and need a place for 8, you'd better be booking real soon. Race weekends can book up fast. Not to mention the race weekend also ties in with the MLK holiday on Monday. Especially for the closer locations.
We have stayed at the Desert Inn & Suites, they have facilities for 8 and even 10 people.
Good luck

I checked out the Desert Inn and that seems ok. I guess I was looking for something with a private bedroom and a small kitchen.

Camelot inn may have that.

The problem is at places like that, HomeWood suites for example, the max per room is 6.

Residence inn used to have large suites.

Book the desert inn now if it's shoeing available! You seem late to be doing this and I'd worry it will slip away and you'll have nowhere.

There is an older Residence Inn (maingate) and one they just built (Anaheim resort/convention) that are both about a 10 minute walk - both have suites. Maingate has a 2 story suite that's 2 bed/2 bath - we're probably going to end up staying there with my parents and 3 kids (so 7 of us in total.) If you're anything like us, we just put our kids wherever, so I'm sure one of these would be enough if you utilized sofa beds, etc. We've stayed at Maingate before in a 1 bedroom...it's older, but decent with a great breakfast and free parking. ETA RI also has full kitchens, so we like to do a Vons delivery so we have food for the kids.

Try the new Courtyard by Marriott might work and it is very nice. The regular rooms have two queen beds with two bunks but I think they also have family suites. The bunk beds are actually fairly good size depending on the ages of your kids. You could also do a suite at the onsite hotels if it's not cost prohibitive.

Residence Inn by the convention center has a 2 bedroom suite that sleeps 8. Haven't stayed but booked for late December.
