We are thinking of using some points to stay seven nights at one of the Disneyland hotels when we tour the West Coast next year. Not sure which of the three hotels to choose. Does anyone have any comments/advice to offer?

Many thanks...

I'd try a forum jump to the Disneyland California DIS board. We're going in August and I've posted quite a few questions there and they've been really helpful. :sunny:

Thanks, diberry, done that. I've never gone that far down the boards before!!!

Gill, I've got the Birnbaum Guide to Disneyland - I recommend this for getting an overview. Lots of nice photos :)

I gather from the US DVC Boards the price per point has come down for DL too so a good time to visit!

Never stayed at any of them but the Grand Californian is the closest but also the most expensive. I think it was designed by the same person who designed Wilderness Lodge. It is gorgeous.
We always stay off site there but it is very different to WDW in that I can walk from our usual hotel to being INSIDE the turnstiles at Disneyland park in 10 minutes - and that's with my 72 year old mother in tow!

We are hoping to do the same thing next May (2006). We want to book at Grand Californian as it looks so nice. Last time we went we stayed off site at Howard Johnson which was really close by.

We are members of DVC now and will use our points for our visit and I await to see the new points for 2006.

Good luck with your choice of hotel.

disney has cut the points price of the disney land hotel for this summer if you want to go now would be a good time.. see the dvc boards for further info

There are only three Disney owned hotels at Disneyland. I've stayed at the Grand Californian. It's not just close to a Disneyland park--its in one of them. GC has its own private entrance to Disney's California Adventure--and Disneyland is just across the ticket plaza from DCA. Closest you can stay to the parks in any US Disney resort. We're going to be staying at Paradise Pier this August which is, like the Disneyland Hotel, a hotel that was built by someone else, then years later bought and re-habbed by Disney. They have "added" Disney theming, but were not architecturally designed as Disney resort hotels. They are nice places, just not what you've come to expect if you're used to WDW resort hotels. Grand Californian is Disney designed and the most expensive--but the experience of staying there is truly GRAND.

I think that all Good Neighbor hotels/motels that surround Disneyland have shuttle service. Please, use them even if your lodging is only a couple of blocks from the parks. I know that folks from the UK are much more willing to walk short and moderate distances--we in the US get kidded (deservedly) about never walking anywhere. But the fact is, it's very dangerous crossing the multi-lane freeways and streets that border Disneyland. Sadly, just last month a family was hit crossing the freeway after a day at the Disneyland and 3 children were killed.

Actually Disneyland is one of the few places you can walk to from outside hotels - there are dedicated crossings on Harbor Blvd - believe me I would not be walking if it wasn't safe. However there are always people who try to take shortcuts and avoid the crossings - that is not safe as that poor family found out.

We recently (February) got back from a stay at Disneyland it was our second time and we stayed at The Grand California again we love it there it's a beautiful hotel and closest to the park entrances.

As much as I love WDW I really enjoy the feeling of walking everywhere in DL - there's no monorail, bus or boat and you can walk to all the other hotels, Downtown Disney and the parks themselves.

I personally do find the Disney owned and run restaurants a little more expensive at DL than I do at WDW but hey I still pay the prices. The food is good and I have eaten at a few of the establishments including Goofy's Kitchen, Blue Bayou, Storytellers Cafe and Napa Rose.

Thanks for all the comments. Obviously we can't do anything as our 11 month window isn't until October, but we'll prbably go with DL resort as the points have been reduced, and then we'll have more points left for another WDW trip! :cheer2:  :cheer2:  :cheer2:
