I would like to order a birthday cake at one of our dinners inside DL or DCA on our upcoming trip. I've seen many of the cake pictures and they all have just a little banner with the name or "Happy Birthday" on it with a chocolate painted character and some little buttercream flowers. Has anyone been able to order something different? Maybe fancier or customized? If so, do you have any pics you are willing to share? Where/how did you order it?

Thanks for any help or advice.

I got the impression when I ordered the cake that there aren't really more customizable options. You can pick from their flavors, a certain set of characters, and that's about it. I really think they do a nice job with those options, we were really happy with ours. A lot of people talk about the cakes on this site, but when it was delivered at Blue Bayou to our table, I saw no other cakes while we were there that night. It was very special!

When we wanted something customized, we brought our own cake. All the on site restaurants we went to for birthdays served our cakes without any problems. The best experience was at Storytellers because the CM made a big show of cutting and serving the cake (a big chocolate cake with Star Wars characters all over it). Our youngest was thrilled.

How do you go about doing this? Do you carry the cake through the park to the restaurant, or do you bring it to guest services by the front gates? Or does the hotel (GCH) get it to the restaurant for you? Ordering my own from somewhere may be the way to go, I'm just trying to figure out how it all works.

There will be four of us, three adults and one child, and the three adults are disabled and will be using ECV's (so carrying it in myself may be problematic). We are all celebrating our birthdays. Two turning 70, one turning 10, and me. So, I'm hoping to surprise the others with something special.

We've always brought our own cakes directly to the restaurant. Usually someone distracts the birthday kid while someone else fetches and delivers the cake. In your case, I would call concierge services at the GCH to see what they can do. I'm sure they would be willing to help you.

I recently went through this. I ordered a cake from an off-site bakery and a friend of mine picked it up and was going to drop it off the Blue Bayou before we got there for dinner. Well, when he got to security, there was a major hassle with him trying to bring it in. He got the third degree as to why he was bringing it in, where it was going etc. He tried to call me, but we were in line for Indiana Jones in the inside area with no signal (waiting because they ride went down). He was eventually made to go off to the side with a security member and call the restaurant itself. They told him and the security person that he could bring it in, but they would not hold it and he would have to wait until we were in the restaurant and he could bring it to us, but the restaurant would not take possession at all. He brought it to our table after we had placed our order with the waiter and my DW wondering why I didn't order dessert when we have the PTN package. The awkwardness of the whole thing was palpable.

It might have been different if I had the cake and brought it in with us, but I still think security would have been an issue, plus, the element of surprise would not have existed. But, overall, it was not a good outcome. YMMV.

That's horrible. You have an extremely good friend.

Since security rules have changed so recently, e.g. metal detectors and other rules, I would highly recommend that the OP go through the GCH concierge. They should be able to help with delivering a custom cake to restaurants in the on site hotels and in the parks.

Agreed! But I think the issue was because it was inside the park.

One other person mentioned Storyteller's Cafe. Since it was outside the park, not a lot of hassle.

He went above and beyond, he even picked us up at the airport and did the 5:30 am drop-off run too.

I agree that it was harder because it was inside the park. He has an AP and between him and speaking to the restaurant beforehand, I thought it would be fine. It worked out in the end, but not something I would do again. The reason I even went to an outside bakery was because I needed a special cake due to dietary restrictions.
