Disneyland and Southern California Adventure Sept 2024

We got an email today saying Jim Henson company is currently unable to accommodate tours (no other explanation)

Oh, so sorry to hear you'll miss it!. The Henson studio visit was truly one of the highlights of our trip--such a beautiful & historic true Hollywood Studio! We got to interact with a puppeteer at work filming a scene bringing the puppet's personality & voice to life, watched as a tech dubbed & synchronized the voices on a video, got to talk to a motion-capture performer. It was great to be onsite at a working studio where things were happening. The introductory film to the studio made by Jim Henson's son was worth the visit--one of the funniest things we've ever seen!

As a studio tour, we actually enjoyed Henson more than the Disney studio where it was basically a lot of walking around the outside of buildings where things "used to happen". Disney studio tour was a bit of a letdown--tour was lots of history facts, some artifacts, nice pictures in Legends Courtyard but no chance to see creative people at work, anything being being worked on at any stage of a film, or ask questions of anyone who was ever involved in creating films. Our studio guides acted like giving the tours was beneath them & implied it was the least favorite part of their jobs. If "walking in Walt's footsteps" is important to you, you'll get that at the studio but we felt it much more the early morning on Main Street.

We got the same notification about our Nov trip. I did the same trip in 2015 and wasn’t that overly impressed with the Jim Henson part but the museum doesn’t look all that thrilling either lol.

Unfortunately, ABD will no longer be going to The Jim Henson Company Lot. I was on the ABD the first week in August and learned that we were the next-to-the-last ABD group who would get to be there. They actually are relocating to Burbank, so maybe ONE day eventually, it will be an option again with ABD (fingers crossed). https://ktla.com/news/local-news/jim-henson-company-expected-to-sell-historic-hollywood-lot-report/
I just noticed it's been replaced on the ABD website as well. I guess they got a nice filming contract for the studio.

This is disappointing. We are going next spring and it was a highlight for me. I've been a huge Jim Henson fan my entire life. Seems like contracts between the various factions of disney are one-way only. On our recent tour with Tauck, an event that was scheduled was removed because the company went out of business. Tauck replaced it with a better event, and mailed us all a check for what they would have paid for the original activity. That's their policy if things out of their control change. And they don't cancel trips or leave you hanging if there is a low number signed up. Nor will signing up for a free trial of disney plus be used as a defense when they are sued over your wife dying from allergen poisoning (In fairness, on that one, disney was just the landlord, and would likely get out of the case anyway). Have you read your travel agreement recently? My point...

I am surprised at such late notice of this significant change to the itinerary... It certainly is not a "make-or-break" in terms of the overall experience, but I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Jim Henson Studios on our ABD trip last year. I know several of the people in our group went to the Academy Museum, and all seemed to enjoy it, so I am sure that will be fun, too.

It's possible that ABD wasn't notified until recently - who knows?! I feel for those who were hopeful to see the Jim Henson Lot.
