Disneyland and San Diego hotels

Hey everyone, we are planning a trip down south next summer (we are from Canada). When at Disneyland we always stay at the Desert Inn and Suites. We like the closeness, the free breakfast (although it's not much it saves the 7 of us alot of money) and we like that it has a pool (even though it isn't much of one). Next summer we were going to do a week in DL (now with the recent price increases we are thinking of dropping this part but I hope they do a CDN ticket sale and I might talk myself back into it) and a week at San Diego (might be longer if we skip DL, plan on doing 2 days at SeaWorld, Legoland, Zoo, the beach, etc). We are driving from Canada so the convenience of walking to the parks like DL won't exist in San Diego but anyone know some cheaper but not sketchy hotels/motels close to San Diego with easy driving to the main destinations. I'm hoping if we go 1/2 hour out we might find way nice for a reasonable price but don't know the area at all and am having difficulties in figuring this one out and it'll be our home base for 1 to 2 weeks so don't want to regret it the whole trip! Suggestions please!!!

With the exception of being "close" to Legoland, any hotel in the Mission Valley area would be within 10-15 minutes of driving to all your other destinations mentioned, specifically on Hotel Circle. You'll find hotels from most hotel groups in this area, along with nice shopping malls, restaurants and grocery stores in case you want to buy groceries for the room. Not a sketchy area at all.

We stayed in La Jolla a couple weeks ago. Nice area and very conveniently located near restaurants, shopping, and a trolley stop. The trolley can take you to many of the places listed.
