We just came back from our trip & we have not been to the fort for a while & I have to say I feel like Disney is going down hill slightly. I can't believe they took away the petting zoo, only ponies that you are not allowed to touch & we were told in a not so polite way! Like some of the grounds should 've been mowed & weed eated , especially the dog park. Does anyone else see things slipping slightly?

Yes, there are a few things that are slipping, but the Fort is about to get quite a bit done to it in less than a month.

The dog park is new. Perhaps they haven't quite got locked down the proper mowing schedule for that area.

Disney is so big that the left side has a hard time talking to the right side.

The petting zoo went the way of many petting zoos in America. Salmonella outbreaks and subsequent lawsuits pretty much sealed the fate of petting zoos. Disney's action was merely a reflection of the trend.

My younger two children were dissapointed about not having the petting zoo but we went to Sea World and they have one there so that worked out. We just left the fort a couple of days ago from a 2 week stay and we thought it was kept up very well for as large as it is. One of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed at.

IIRC they used to have a sort of petting zoo at the outpost station in AK ... or maybe I've been/am dreaming.

A lot of people complain about Disney going down hill and that may be true to some extent, but I think it's more that people's expectations have grown impossibly high.

Ive caught myself thinking Disney could improve on this...or they could do a better job of that....then we took a trip to Universals little world......I'll never stray from Disney again!!!!

They moved the petting zoo animals to the petting zoo at Animal Kingdom. They have more people there to watch over everyone and make sure hands are being sanitized when leaving the area. :)

Meet any Diser's ? Have any fun ? What loop were you in ? Got any good pics ? We are freaks for pics !

The only reason why I complain is that I know what they used to do for folks. Granted, it is MUCH better than Universal, but when you have been going for over 30 years and knew what it was like then and what it is like now...one just has to wonder how much they can cut back and raise prices at the same time. I am not talking about our current economy, a lot of changes happened when the economy was good, they just wanted more of a profit. Will this stop me from buying annual passes and going every couple of months? No! Most of the things (except the train, I will not let go of the FWTrain!) are very small, but made a huge difference to me when I was growing up.

(off soapbox)

Actually, the Fort isn't slipping, it's improving rapidly. They are putting so much money into the Fort right now it's crazy. Everything from the tree harvesting to the new pool coming to upgraded campsites to Segway tours to brand new insides on the stores, the list goes on.

I have never seen so much work being done on the Fort in the 25+ years I can remember being there. They really are pulling out all the stops right now, it's a great time to visit the Fort.

Now, some of the nostalgic stuff is gone, and yes, that isn't always the greatest thing. Disney has a tendency to live in the past, which is fine and dandy, but everyone has to change at some point.

One thing I've noticed about the WDW theme parks recently is that they are not keeping up with cleaning and stocking the restrooms. You also see trash cans overflowing, and less and less CM's doing the "Disney Scoop". Explanation.... when a CM is walking thru the park and spots trash on the ground, they are suppose to "scoop" it up and put it in a trash bin. In the past even on high-crowd days, the trash cans were always emptied in a timely manner & the restrooms were spotless.

The other thing I've noticed is that things like ironwork rails and lamp-posts aren't being painted as often as in the past. There's a lot of chipped paint on stuff. If you aren't there as much as I am, you probably wouldn't notice this. I'm probably a little OCD about this, but that is the one thing that set Disney apart from the Busch parks and US/IOA - the maintenance.
