Hi,
Do you know if my son who is almost 6 but not quite, can sign up for a 6 year old class? Do they check in any way?

Thanks!

Hi,
Do you know if my son who is almost 6 but not quite, can sign up for a 6 year old class? Do they check in any way?

Thanks!

I found this thread around page 130 (mid-March 2011) and one of the first topics of discussion was age-related.

Let me preface by saying that there have been some changes to the administration of the YES program in the last few weeks (mid-April 2011), so while I can tell you what other people have experienced in the past, I don't know if changes have been made to this issue or not.

The consensus was that proof of age has not been required. And no type of proof is required to register. You do have to check a box that you have read, understand, and abide by the guidelines given.

I personally emailed and asked this question about my DS8 attending a Chemistry class for ages 9+ and was told that due to safety reasons the age requirements are strict. I also read, after I sent the email, that the Chemistry class was geared for 4th graders+. While my DS8 physically looks old enough to be 9 and absolutely loves science, he will be in 2nd grade and is not at the 4th grade level, which is actually the low end of the spectrum for the class.

I would assume that everyone in the YES office is instructed to give the same "for safety reasons..." response. But I would encourage you to call and talk to one of the CM's if you think your situation warrants an exception. They have all been very pleasant and helpful when I have called. I would never ask my child to lie if asked his age (I'm not implying you would) to get a certain meal plan, or ticket price, etc. So it becomes a personal choice about whether you consider the age range a "gray area" or not.

Thanks! I think we are looking at a different date now, anyway. He can do a 5 year old class. :) But that's good to know. I appreciate your response!

Not sure if this is possible but doesn't hurt to ask. It looks like from past and present dates that they usually don't offer the YES non-group program in the beginning of June and to have a group you need 10 or more people and only 6 are in our group.
Has anyone ever set up a group of thier own? I was thinking of something to do with Charter Schools. My DD will be ending her time in charter school and my DS will be starting. If I could get a few more people with children in Charter School say in WI or Northern WI could we form a group. I'm only thinking about this because I know that you can turn in an application 12 months in advance. My children would love to attend one of the sessions.

YES has tightened up the definition of what a group can be; 'created' groups are no longer permitted even if they put up a website or Facebook page etc. Recognized groups such as Boy or Girl Scouts, etc. are allowed.

As the Individual Enrollment classes are growing in popularity and are now more in demand maybe YES group will add more to this program so it is possible that next year there could maybe be an expanded schedule in June. You can always call or email them to ask any questions that you are wondering about and let them know too you'd be interested in early June classes.

Good luck :)

My son is 10 and I want to get him involved with one of the classes. Is there already a group set up for this date, if so can we join? I don't know what classes are offered during this week. Also, does one parent or both or neither have to attend the class? I read somewhere that one parent had to attend but then I heard it was based on occupancy. I am trying to get a potential schedule made out and decide who will stay with DS(10) and who will take care of DS(3). Any help is greatly appreciated.

You will nned to sign up as Individial Enrollment. Here is a link where you can scroll down to the dates that you will be there:

http://www.disneyyouth.com/individual-enrollment/catalog/

One parent is required to attend with a child under 12, so the other parent could stay with the 3 yr old.

We will be there the same week you are. My DD 12 is signed up for the Ocean Discoveries class on the 11th, and I am aware of 4-5 others on this board who are also signed up for that one.

We really got a great discount on the tickets.

We are going to be in that class as well! My little sister (10), cousin (10), and sister's friend (11) will be attending the class as well as myself (24) and am VERY excited about it! I'm happy to hear that it will take place as I think I am more excited about the class than the kids are! :)

I was also getting a little nervous that they had changed the class to June 20. I was back on the YES program website today and a lot of the classes they are having while we are going to be down there have changed dates. We won't be in FL until June 20 so I was starting to worry that they would make us change classes.

Are you sure they changed dates?

Our kids are doing classes at Epcot on June 14th. When I checked the website later, the same classes were listed for June 15th and the June 14th classes weren't listed. I contacted the YES program and they said the June 14th classes were still happening, but because they had filled to capacity, they removed them from the website and added additional classes for June 15th.

So you can't assume dates have changed just because the same classes are listed on a different date now.

I was replying to a lady who said that she had called for the same class/date as we are scheduled for and that the class was full. It looks like they have just added a lot more classes the week that we are there, including the same class we are attending June 22. Before I had read that info from another lady on the disboard, I was worried that they had changed the dates of the classes. Sorry if that sounded a little confusing but thank you for your help! :)

I want to ask a quick question just to be sure I'm not missing something, this deal just sounds way to good to be true. I signed myself and my daughter up for an animation class and as a result was able to get tickets for my entire family at a significant discount about $300 less than what I would have paid if we were not getting a free class. I've already signed up and paid but I just want to be sure that I'm not missing something. Is there anything else required? I can hardly believe that we get a free class and discounted tickets.

Yep, its true, but let's keep it our little secret! ;)

Hello from "the lady!" I'll tell my mom to keep an eye out for your group. Glad to know there will be another Dis family there!

Isn't it exciting to stumble onto something that's too-good-to-be-true only to find out that it IS true?! I was able to take advantage of it for my brother's family (who REALLY NEEDS the savings on this trip!) and am only hoping by our next trip when my son will be old enough to participate that it still exists and is as good of a deal!

Sounds good to me! I am very excited to know that there are enough people to have the class. I would have hated for them to cancel it because there was not enough people. :)

Well, technically, the class isn't "free." The (I think $26) cost is built into the price of the tickets. But yes, the tickets are drastically discounted. The only downside to them is that they are not upgradable and nonrefundable. So you really have to be sure you're gonna take that trip! But for our family of 7, we saved about $1200 on our tickets!! :thumbsup2

Our kids did the Synergy in Science class March 2010 and loved it! We're going to do Wild by Nature in June. :thumbsup2

Disney says DVC is their "best kept secret," but I really think this YES program is their "best kept secret!" ;)

We need a thread for Yes Class roll call so we can see who is going when :)

With as much traffic as this thread has received, I think most of the YES class attendees will be DIS families. :)

We have 2 kids doing Synergy in Science and 2 kids doing Dynamics of Technology on June 14 at Epcot. I've read posts from at least 3 or 4 other posters who have kids going to the same classes.

Is anybody else going to be doing the Wild by Nature class at AK on June 14??

I was just checking on the list of classes for a friend and I see that the Oct 11 Ocean Discoveries class is now listed as closed. That's the class we are taking. Very excited that the class filled. :cheer2::cheer2:
