I can't believe that there may a strike in the near for Disney World. I just noticed it on CNN and they are looking to vote next Thursday to allow the strick.
I know I will not make friends with these comments but Unions need to understand business a little bit more. They have caused more companies to file chapter 11 and go under and more dis-service to good customers then they ever do good. I do not feel Disney is going to go under due to the strike how ever they could and then where will these employees be.... OUT OF WORK FOR GOOD !!!...
Give me a break.. If your unhappy with your job then find a new one. If you do not want your medical or your benifits cut then welcome to the world of everyone else and deal with it. No one is ever happy about paying more in medical or lossing a benifit they once had but it sure bets unemployement....

NO TO THE STRICK.. You will drive us away and drive folks out of a job for real.

I don't think we know enough of the details to say whether or not they are turning down a good deal.

I am not going to worry about it until it happens. WDW does everything it can to make sure that everyone has a magical vacation and I think they will try to do that strike and all.

I am with Safety Mom. I don't really know enough and besides does it really matter what we think. (The union isn't asking us to vote!)

I'm not a big fan of Unions. I think they had their place at one time but we now have laws and labor boards that protect people and make sure we are working in safe places.
That being said I have not heard much about this so I'm not aware of what the issues are. I hope all is resolved quickly for everyones sake. I'm sure the employees don't want to strike if they don't feel they need to.

Don't feel I could voice an opinion about the strike unless I knew what the issues were. Also not a big fan of unions. I feel they are unfair to business a lot of the time. As an administrator with union workers, I can see the that union does protect its workers sometimes, but other times they just leave them out in the cold.

Does anyone know if Disney has a "strike plan"? I mean, I can't imagine that they don't already know exactly how they will handle a strike.

Update :) As of 7pm tonight:

Report: Disney, union reach agreement

By Sean Mussenden | Sentinel Staff Writer

Leaders of Walt Disney World's largest union reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with the company tonight, a Disney spokeswoman said.

Details were not immediately available.

Contract negotiations between Walt Disney World and the Service Trades Council Union continued today, a day after union leaders temporarily halted talks and, in frustration, said they would ask workers for the authority to call a strike.

The two sides have been working for eight months to reach an agreement on a new three-year contract that would cover more than 20,000 theme park and hotel workers.

Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Polak characterized the talks as productive, She said the company would continue to press for an agreement.

Walt Disney World has not had a strike since a group of musicians stopped work in the early 1980s. The Service Trades Council, with more than 20,000 members, has never gone on strike.

Workers can vote to accept Disney's latest proposal, or vote it down

Based on the title of this thread, I was expecting to be asked to run around WDW naked

Me too, that was the quickest I ever clicked on a thread!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, I don't think our opinions really matter on this subject because it's not OUR jobs that we are talking about. I'm sure most Guests at WDW could care less how much the Cast is making or if they get medical benefits. So many people on this board have a selfish "Disney workers are going to ruin my vacation" view about this strike.
As a former front line Cast Member, I would like to point out that these people are not just there to sell you popcorn and clean your rooms, this is their job. They do this to support their families. You have no right to say that if they don't like their job they should simply quit and get another job. You do not live in Central Florida, you do not know our job market, and you do not know anything about these workers. I doubt you know anything about the 8 month long negotiations either.
Disney advertises "great benefits & competitive pay" and that's why people take jobs here. The workers simply want the company to back up that statement. The cost of living is going up for everyone. It's not unheard of for them to want a raise.
If Disney wants to keep Guests happy, they have to employ happy people. You should be happy that you can even afford to take a vacation, because Im sure many of the people who serve you on your Disney trip can't afford to do the same.

Hear Hear Stacy!! As someone who has worked both with and without a union, I can tell you that many many businesses out there will screw you if they can. Unions are in place to stop that. It's not just about labor laws, etc. Ask people who work in management at automotive companies who are let go when they are 50 because the company wants to hire a 24 year old who will work for less money. Or someone who is fired unfairly, but due to "at will" laws, they have no recourse. I pray people are never in that position. You'll have a much different opinion.

I come from a long time Union family. They made sure my family members were trained properly, given fair treatment and paid fair wages. Minimum wage is not a fair wage - it is below the poverty line. There are bad people in Union management just like there are in corporate mangement - I just wish that people would consider that, and to find out all the facts first.

Well, it's not the union workers fault if they are doing their part of the bargin and following their contact and the company fails to follow the guideline of the contact.

Living in Las Vegas I can tell you I'm no big fan of Unions but I sure don't trust corporations either and like it or not, Disney is a MAJOR CORPORATION and will try to cut as many corners as possible, that's just good business and it's better business if you can do it and get away with it. Getting rid of some overtime pay thanks to the goverment, less insurance for more money out of the paycheck, even less hours so they don't have to provide insurance because they are part-time employees.. I mean the list goes on and on.

I know pro-Union folks have a good point but I also know that anti-union people also have a good point. I have seen way to many strikes here in Las Vegas because the Unions wanted to rule the planet and tell the owners of companies how they "ARE" going to run their business and what they are going to pay... but at the same time I have also seen these big companies take real shots at their employees and the Union has stopped it.

So like I said, I don't like Unions but I can see why they are sometimes needed... now remember... this is just how I see things...

There are so many things that I want to say, but can't on a public forum.

What I will say is this -- Don't believe everything you read, especially since in this case, the article posted neglects to mention a very important crutial element that might just make everything backfire.

But like I said, I cannot really discuss this on a public forum. You can PM me though.
