Disney World in late August

We are thinking of a trip to Disney right before school starts - Aug16 timeframe. We typically have gone in Jan-Feb timeframe, but kids are getting older and harder to pull out of school and being able to drive will save a ton of money! I know it will be hot - we live in Texas so are used to that. What I am really wondering is what the crowds are like. We've been spoiled going in Jan-Feb with little to no lines. I've looked at some sites that have some of that info, but it seems to be different on each site. Anyone have experience with the crowds in late August? Thanks!

We have our 6th late August trip coming up this year. As you said, it is very hot and humid with afternoon thunder showers most days. The crowds in the parks are busy but really drop off the week before labour day weekend. In years past touring plans list the third week of August with level 7 and 8 crowds, while the last week typically sees crowd levels of 4 and 5.

I've never found the crowds to be too bad as long as you arrive for rope drop, if you can, to get the headliner attractions done while the lines are shorter. In the afternoon you can do the attractions that never have lines and in the evenings, the lines tend to shorten again (but only a little).

In speaking with others who have been during July and early August, crowds in late August aren't nearly as bad. It won't be as light as Jan-Feb, but it is still enjoyable.

We've done a number of August trips and will go again this year. Crowds are very manageable - our March and Christmas trips cannot compare in how good August is! We are rope-droppers and take pm breaks when the rain comes. It really is a great time to visit!

This is our 3rd late august trip. We a re checking in on august 16th. I like yo go at rope drop and then go back to the hotel for the rain and finally go back to the park after dinner. We Usually have an early dinner though like around 4:30 so the parks are light around 6 or 7.

we are Texans too and our first trip was in August.. it is down right hot and humid. I would say its worse, but its probably the same as Texas coastal regions, except that you are walking 15,000 steps in this hot humidity and dealing with crowds.

RD will be the best time to hit the parks..

LOL, just noticed my signature line, the August trip.. even says HOT.. thats how bad it was :P

We're heading to WDW on 8/16. We've made several summer trips due to school commitments. The combo of hot weather AND crowds is a huge challenge, but the crowds do decrease as August winds down. One of the reasons is that many school districts start their sessions before Labor Day. So you should be fine, especially if you deal with hot/hazy/humid weather at home. Thank heavens for pools and a/c!

You should probably decide soon though. The place is filling up due to summer discount and FD offerings.

We booked our vacation from Aug 17th to 27th. Visiting the parks on the 18th to 26th. We are prepared for the hot humid weather.

We are the 16th to the 26th at PoR and it will be hot, just take advantage of the pool! And I've always had good luck with the parks in the evening.

My DW and I took what was my "First" Trip to WDW in 2005 or 2006 (her 3rd I think). Long story short, we went during that time frame because it was our Anniversary. (Aug 16th). We only did an "Extended" Weekend (Stayed off property). The lines were not horrible, but the heat/humidity was intense.

Ironically we had another trip later that year (with the kids) in October. Hoped it would be a bit cooler. WRONG. That year all we heard was that "This (particular) year was 'Unseasonably' HOT!". Oh Joy for us. Near the end of our October trip though, we had to pull out the "Hoodies" as it got quite cold.

I suppose the moral of the story is to be prepared for just about anything and make the best of it. It is, after all, Disney.

We've done the August trip too, it will be uncomfortably hot, but everywhere in Florida turns up the AC to polar plunge levels to where you want to go outside.

Crowds will be big, but not even comparable to peak times.

I have our 2nd August trip booked and it is going to be hot. Our plans change during the Summer months, we make sure to hit RD. It is essential for us to get the most out of the mornings and then get back to the resort to cool off, swim and relax. We go back out for a late dinner and maybe another park. WE do not stay in the parks during the hottest part of the afternoon.

We often go in August. Yes it is hot & humid, but so is NY & I'd rather be at WDW then NY in that weather any day!
