Disney World Coke machine question?

Hello All,

I just heard a disturbing rumor. My son's karate coach used to work at Disney as an electrician. He was telling me that the coke machines at
Disney have thermostats built into them that change the price according to the outside temperature. Is this true? If it is I will be very disappointed.

I hope this isn't true.

Thanks for any info,

Frank

That just sounds silly. Surely not.

Why would they just raise the price when the machine was loaded? They could easily crank up the price manually in August and lower it later on.

But really - it's always hot in Florida.

That is not true. All of the WDW machines are always set to the exact same price that soda is sold for at other WDW locations. This is currently $2.00 per bottle. Your son's karate coach told you a lie.

I don't know about the price changing, but I put my debit card into one of the ones out in front of the MGM entrance, and when I got back home, I discovered it had charged my account something like 64 times I think it was. Anyway, it was over 60 times, just several pages of online bank statement that were nothing but a $2.50 charge over and over. The bank took it off right away, as it was obvious I wouldn't be buying that many cokes out of a machine all at once, but be careful putting a debit/credit card in one of those.

Edited because of recent post- ok it's possible it was a $2.00 charge over and over, but I thought it was $2.50, I could be mistaken.

The price was $2.50. They lowered it to $2.00 a few months back.

I can't speak to WDW's Coke machines, but They do make coke machines that change the price based on the temperature, so it is not impossible.

Again, I can't speak to WDW's machines in particular, but the technology does exist.

It's $2 if you buy one in the parks, and I think at the resorts, but if you buy one from a vending machine it's still $2.50. At least, it was last weekend.

Hmmm, is that the Ei$ner switch???

It wouldn't suprize me, but I would think that WDW would get caught on that one. The electrician might have just installed a "Test" machine...

JMHO, with no bearing on reality...

:jumping2:

They have had these machines in Japan since 1999. It's pretty common over there now. It's not as bad as you might think because they not only raise the price past a base price when it gets hot but they also drop it below that price when it gets cold too. It was part of the same machine roll out that made it so you could "phone in" a purchase.

I don't know if there are any in the US yet though.

I don't know, I've never noticed a difference in the price at the machines anywhere on property, and we spend a LOT of time at WDW, being only an hour and a half away.

Do those machines really take credit/debit cards? Is that something new or something I just never noticed?

Well, I don't know if all the machines do, but I know some do, like the ones out by the bus stops in front of MGM. I believe I've seen some bus stop machines at the resorts that do as well. But I don't know if the machines on each floor of the resort buildings do, I haven't ever checked that. That will be something to check out and report on my next visit!

Just as a side note for anyone who might not know, all of the ice cream carts and popcorn carts, etc in the parks now have little terminals to take debit/credit cards and resort keys also. If you don't mind putting everything on a card, you can pretty much go without cash now. The only exception might be the balloon sellers/nighttime light-up toy vendors, haven't checked on that.

It's criminal what they charge for a drink no matter what the temperature is.
Why does the EXACT same drink I pay .50 cost 4 times as much there.

I LOVE what they do at Holiday World. FREE softdrinks throughout the whole park, and free sunscreen in the water park.

They had to come up with some way to bring in extra cash to pay Eisner's 10 million dollar bonus each year. :rotfl:

That's true, this is at least double what it is most other places. For the same 20 oz. plastic bottle that you get out of those machines for $2, the machine at my work charges $1, and the machine at the laundromat nearby also charges $1. And these places are about 90 miles from Disney. Even the convenience stores around here, with the absolute highest prices, might charge $1.09. A lot of things are a little bit higher at Disney, and you expect that, but this is one item that really is at least double the price for the exact same item, not even a Mickey and friends label or anything, hehe.

Thanks, crazy4wdw, my thoughts EXACTLY! :teeth: Ei$ner=$$$$$ :scared1:

That's why Holiday World has been voted best in country for the past few years. We love being just 40 minutes from there. Pepsi brand drink are free, unlimited and self serve! Pepsi paid a bundle for the 'privilege' of being the drink sponsor.

Where do you get a bottle of coke for 50 cents? Ten years ago you could get a can for 50 cents, but these days it seems like it's $.75 for a can or $1.25 (approx.) for a bottle.

Well, if it's Pepsi no wonder they are giving it away for free! I'd rather pay $2.00 for a coke, then get a free Pepsi! Pepsi= :crazy2: :rotfl2:
