oh i'm back! all cleaned up and unpacked!
the marathon went really well. i'm surprised i wasn't a little more nervous going into cause i knew what to expect. but maybe that's why i felt confident was that i knew how it would feel and just what it was going to take. that and it's really hard to get nervous for something when it's 4am
the race itself started at 6am on sunday. i got up at 315 for breakfast, my dad got up with me and made it for me. i was out to the bus stop just before 345. i missed a bus to epcot just as i got out there but i figured there was no need to worry. i thought the bus was only going to be picking up from beach club. i figured i would be ok since there'd just be one stop at the beach club. unlike last year i barely got a seat on the bus cause we were at saratoga springs and it's so spread out that it makes several stops around the resort. well apparently my thinking was wrong. the bus was also stopping at the swan, dolphin, yacht club and the boardwalk. i don't know how they were planning to get people from 5 resorts on buses. so the buses were getting full before they ever even made it to the beach club. i finally got on one at about 410 (they say the last one leaves at 4 but that's completely wrong haha).
i got over to epcot and met my best friend out in the parking lot. and boy what a difference it was compared to last year! i was freezing last year. so i had purchased entrance into the runners vip tent. i got a special place to check in any clothing i was leaving behind, special toilets just for the vip runners, a carpeted area to stretch, food and drinks were provided, the tent was heated (not that it needed to bed) and afterwards i got a 10min massage. the heated tent and massage sold me on paying for the vip

but it was sold out when my best friend went to sign up for it. so i just checked my stuff in real fast, grabbed a water for me and her and went back outside to hang out with her. unfortunately i didn't get to run with her cause she was in a different coral than i was in. she had an official time so she could enter faster than 5 hours. i had an official time but it was 6 hours and 12 minutes and i didn't want to use that. you can enter up to 5 hours without proof. any faster and you have to prove it. so we parted ways at about 530.
i managed to weasle my way up to the very front of coral c so that i would be in a good position to start. the first couple of miles aren't very fun because everyone is so bunched up and crowded. but it slowly started to spread itself at about 5 miles. last year i was really naive and thought i could get away with running the marathon without training very hard. so i was already starting to hurt at 5 last year. and my estimation of my finish time was so bad my parents started to worry when i wasn't getting to certain places at certain times. so the night before i sat down and estimated about where i would be when. amazingly enough i did a really good job. every place they say me was during a time frame i said i would be there. towards the beginning i gave them 15min windows but towards the end i turned them into 30min windows. just in case i slowed down for whatever reason.
they called me right after i had passed 10 miles saying they were just getting to the ttc. unfortunately at that point i was starting to run into the magic kingdom. my dad really wanted to get me running out of the castle but he never would have made it there. so i told them to head over to the grand floridian right by mile 12. they got there just in time too! i stopped in magic kingdom for a quick photo with donald and daisy. and i was still going strong and feeling really good at halfway (13.1). i split about 2 hours and 15min there. last year i started to hit the wall at halfway, and i had to fight (mixed running and walking) all the way to mile 18 before giving in and walking to the end (well i did run across the finish line).
on the back stretch to animal kingdom i started to hurt a little bit. i was holding a little bit faster than i wanted up to that point so i slowed my pace a little bit but i still was holding what i wanted to. i stopped along the way for a picture with darkwing duck (haha) and then again when i got in animal kingdom for another picture with donald and daisy. i saw my parents and heidi outside animal kingdom. i told them (just so they didn't worry that i had slowed my pace just a little bit). i stopped again real quick for a picture with mickey right by mile 18 (parking lot at animal kingdom... these stops were really quick, maybe 30 seconds in all). i was really starting to feel the burn at this point.
i hit the proverbial wall at about mile 20. but i kept fighting. i knew i was close. at this point i was only walking through the water stops (to make it easier to drink, it's hard to drink while you're running!) and up any hills. at mile 22 i was at just about 4 hours. if i had been able to hold what i wanted i should have been about 4 hours and 20min at the finish. but all i really wanted to do this time was be under 5 hours. so with 4 miles left i was holding well enough to get under 5 with no problem. all i had to do was hold 15min for the last 4 miles, which was really easy. i walked most of mile 23 and i stopped to stretch real quick. that was my slowest mile which was just under 15, so i knew i was good. i stopped inside mgm real quick to grab a picture with darth vader and a couple storm troopers. at this point i was mixing running with walking. but i would only let myself walk maybe 4 minutes at a time. and i had to run at least 5 min before i'd walk again. so i was still holding at least 12min miles.
i saw heidi and my parents again right outside the boardwalk, with about a mile and a half left. by this point i was sick to death of water and powerade. and i remember thinking i couldn't wait to finish so i could have a coke. just so it was something different. i stopped to talk to them real quick. and my mom asked if i wanted some cinnamon roll, water, powerade or coke. she was my savoir i downed the rest of their coke while heidi was yelling at me for stopping and telling me to keep going. my mom just looked at her and said that all kinds of other people stopped along the way to hug and talk to their families. that was the first i had really stopped for more than about 30 seconds. then as i was running past mile 25 which is in the back of the world showcase in france where you can see people coming in the back entrance i heard my mom whistle (they were coming in the park) so i turned and waved and kept going. i saw them again right as i came out of the showcase to head to the 26 mile sign right out of the side of epcot.
as i came around and saw the finish though i got really confused. cause they started shooting off confetti and making a big deal about someone crossing the finish line. the 100,000st runner in marathon history had crossed the finish line. i almost won a cool prize. i was so close! but i'm completely happy with what i did.
i finished in 4 hours 53 minutes and 30 seconds. i took almost an hour and a half off my time from last year. and i felt really good most of the way. and i didn't feel as horrible as i did last year. yeah i was sore yesterday and sunday but not nearly as bad. i'm still a little sore today. and i might lose 1 little toenail. unlike the 4 or 5 i lost last year. i signed up for next year last night while we were at the airport. i'm really hooked. it's fun and very satisfying. and i know i can probably take another 30min or so off my time. cause i know i didn't train the best that i could. the longest run i did was 16... the hard thing with that was that they all fell when i was either at disney world or on a cruise. so it was hard to get all the long runs fully in. and there were a few weeks where i would be lazy. but i never just flat out stopped training like the year before. so i'm very happy with how i did and i know i can do even better!
