Disney Wonder Jan 23, 2011

Evening Steve :)

It may all be moot if no one else voices an opinion, or if everyone on the board doesn't let me know whether or not they want to purchase. Since it's bulk, if not enough people participate then there is no way to get them. If things were better and we hadn't lost our jobs last year we might just buy them for everyone - but there's no way that's going to happen with our situation now.

In the end I think buttons or wristbands are the best options. Which one we get, I don't really care. :)

I just think it's still a bit early for most people. Most still probably have summer trips to plan or are focusing on work or their kids' school right now. I'm sure our thread will ramp up around September or October. Fortunately things like wristbands or buttons don't need to be ordered too far in advance. I don't mind doing the ordering of whatever the group decides. We can just have people PM me the quantity they need and their address and I can take care of the rest. I won't worry about this for a while though.

And while our number are pretty large, I think it's mostly due to a couple of large parties we have sailing with us. While we might have one person in those groups who posts here, I'm sure their brother in-law or great aunt sailing with them couldn't care less about wristbands or logos or even when we plan to meet. They just want to cruise and have fun!

I also wouldn't blame someone who is traveling with anyone outside their immediate family to not participate as much. I know on the two cruises I've been on where I sailed with friends, I just wanted to focus on spending time with them and didn't care as much about doing the meets on the ship.

We'll see though. Like I said, it's still pretty early and I'm sure the chatter on here will grow as it gets closer to fall. :goodvibes

I completely agree with you, Steve. And to the point, the last "meet and greet" I participated in alone. My DW had no interest in attending :( nor does she have an interest in the boards, although she appreciates the information I get from them as the information has made for better trips and better shore excursions.

STEVE: I don't know what I would do if I lived so far away from DL! Just thinking about it makes me sad :sad2:...Sergio and I live right in the middle of everything (10 miles from Universal, 21 miles from Knotts, 34 miles from DL, and 45 miles from Six Flags).

We are also definitely interested in linking the dining.
AND the PJ breakfast! :goodvibes And you are right, people are worried about other things right now and the traffic on this board will get crazier as the cruise nears.
JESSICA:
YO YO YO! :lmao:I can't stop thinking about how awesome the scavenger hunt is going to be. And now we have something else to look forward to before the cruise! ;) Thanks for the tidbit about the lifeboats, btw! Sergio and I hadn't noticed it before, so we immediately looked at pictures of the boat.

Sergio and I agree to meeting in the Promenade Lounge. You know we are down for anything and everything. :thumbsup2 We actually have some of those hard cases and use them when we go to DL all the time! They are VERY convenient! Therefore, we vote for wrist bands or buttons.

KRIS: Thanks for the heads up on the dining show! I love to watch anything that is Disney related. I've already set my Tivo to record it. :)

I am taking this cruise too. I am cruising with my sister(disneydad123) and I would love to be added to your list and my family(4 kids 1 husband and me).

Kids:

Ashley 17 girl
Tanner 15 boy
Spencer 11 boy
Sugar 7 girl her birthday is on the 29th of January

My husband is 42 (clint)
And Me I am 38(barely)( Sarah)

I am so excited.

Tonya - That is a really cool looking FE. Great job! Did you just cut the fabric to size and tape it in the back? Were the letters iron-on? We have one of the original basic store-bought FE's but I'd love to plus it. We have no sewing skills either. I'm not even sure we could safely handle scissors. :headache:

Cari - What about putting our eventual logo on Cafepress or Zazzle? Has anyone here done that? Someone set this up for us on a past cruise. That way we could get the logo on shirts, bags, mugs, or whatever. I was told you are required to make a profit but the people who set it up only added $1 to each sale so they could put the items up there. That way we would only have to pay a dollar more than the product costs. Just a thought.

Tonya or any other crafty type person, I have a question...Would I use something like a "Heat n Bond" type product to make my own FE??? It seems pretty simple to use. I have been looking at e-bay at all the different Disney pieces of fabric and really would like to try my hand at making my own. It is weird but I have done embroidery when I was younger but I just don't think hand sewing would be good enough for a FE. But this stuff looks like it would be strong enough to hold everything on.
Back to e-bay...
Sue

Thank you :) Mine isn't nearly as nice as some of them, but it was cheap.. lol I didn't have a pattern or anything. I can't remember how long and wide some people said to make them. If they are to wide they don't fit in the space where the fish hook is. If you look around on here, there should be some info on size. If you can't find it I will go find mine and measure it for you.
No, I didn't tape it. I just cut out the back piece in one pattern. Then I put 4 pockets.. one for each family member. I just cut out a size and folded it in a little on each side. I didn't have a sewing machine at the time so I just used that wonder under and ironed iton.. I think it's called. You use that as your "glue"hold the folded sides down. Once all for sides were folded into kind of a rectangle then I put the web fusing/glue on the bottom and sides and left the top open.

Those letters were iron ons too. I didn't have string for the top so I used an old shoe lace I found.. lol Then put the dowels on it. A lot of people used the round wooden pieces like Mickeys head and made little ears attached to it. They looked cute! Anyways, hope this helps a little.

As far as lanyards, on the last cruise we did them. I didn't really care to have any, but I have to say I ended up LOVING them. They do come in so handy so you don't have to hold your room key. If you don't have one you have to keep it in your pocket... kind of a pain. When we got off the ship to Castaway Cay, I didn't have pockets in my suit so the laynards were nice. Then everytime we would pass people we could tell they were from our group. In the plastic we had our names with the logo on it. The strap was black and had our date we sailed.

I don't think I would use the wristband. I always take them off and forget to put them back on. I know I wouldn't wear a pin either.

Oh and about the tshirts. Most of our group made their own shirts. It was cheaper. We just got white shirts from Target and then got the iron on paper and printed up our logo on it. They take your pic when you first get on the cruise, so we had those shirts on and then we could see everybody else that was in our group.

Hi Sarah! Welcome to the group!! :woohoo: I have added you and your family to our list. Let me know if you want to participate in FE's or if you have any questions. It's good to have you with us!

For who-ever needs it, the FE cannot be more than 8" wide; I believe I read somewhere that Disney regulates that. In any case, the max width is 8". Hope that helps! :thumbsup2

It's on the website that you provided for the woman who makes the FE hangers; that's probably where you read it :)

No, that lady didn't even know - I'm the one who gave her that info! I read it somewhere else, maybe on someone else's website who sells FE's, or maybe on DISboards somewhere?? I can't remember. :confused3 Thanks for reading my site though! :thumbsup2:lmao:

And to think I was being a smartie pants with that reply and it backfired :(

I'll let you know about the FE. To be honest, I'm not really all that interested in doing it, but I know my DS would get a kick out of it. I'll get you a picture sometime soon as well.

Have you decided what you and Ryan are going to do in San Diego?

Kris

I have checked out the FE's and I was wondering how it all works. Maybe there is a link I missed. Do we buy just one for the family or one per person. 2 of my kids are staying in my Dad's room, how will that work if its only one per family? Do we exchange names or something like that? I am sorry for all of the questions. If I did miss a link or not read where I should have please forgive me for all of the stupid questions.

I guess I should have added that we have late dining. And we want to do the FE's and our room is not determined yet. Thank you so much for adding us.

You're too funny. No worry on the FE; you don't have to do it. :)

About San Diego - everything is up in the air. Ryan is being considered for a job in San Francisco, so we're waiting to see what unfolds (it looks like he might be there over my bday weekend :(). I'll let you know what we decide if he says here though! In the meantime I've started looking at gifts he could get me incase he's not here for my bday weekend :rotfl2:! OMG I've found some amazing have to have items! Vintage metal lunchboxes from when I was a kid! Most in pristine, never used condition! Everything from Pete's Dragon, Care Bears, Popples, Magic Kingdom, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, to chitty chitty bang bang and so much more! It's amazing! In fact, I've been online looking at them for well over an hour and we're supposed to be getting read. :rolleyes1 (We're going to the drive-in movies tonight!) It kind of sucks that they never play 2 movies you want to see together, so we're seeing 2 movies that aren't great. Tomorrow we'll go see Despicable me at the real theater!

Have a good night and I will keep you posted!

Jess

Hi Sarah
I wanted to let you know that I've seen your question and I'm not ignoring you or anything. I will write a full explanation later - but I have to get ready to leave right now. To give you the quick answer, it's usually one per family, but you can do it however you'd like. You only get 1 hook to hang it on per cabin, so you could either split it up that way, or have the whole family on one. Even though it's at a different cabin, I'm sure you guys are probably close to one another on the ship - the kids could always go to your cabin to check the FE and take their goodies back to their cabin. I will explain more later, but I hope that helps for the moment! :thumbsup2

If anyone else wants to jump in and help explain - feel free!

Hi Sarah, I'm Tonya. Oh yeah, more boys! My kids will be happy. I have 2 boys. Jaren will be 12 next and Braden is 8. Welcome!! Is this your first Disney cruise?

OK, what happened to my last post??? Maybe I previewed it & didn't post :confused3
Welcome to all our new cruisers!:dance3::grouphug:
Yea! more boys! pirate: My DS (he will be almost 11 in Jan) will be so happy. :cool1:
I have been so lost on the magnet thread...I love Milliepie's designs. If I get around to buying the magnet tape ( I think I will do that instead of magnet paper) I will be set. Then off into FE creating mode. I am such a non-crafty person but I really like the idea of decorating our cabin door and exchanging little goodies. Halloween is one of my fav holiday's just because I love giving out the treats.
So if I have ignored anyone questions directly to me, let me know.
Jessica, you mean if Ryan gets the job we could possibly be neighbors? Well nearby neighbors. The city is about 1-1/2 hours drive north of us. :hippie:
We are hoping to see the Sorcerers Apprentice tomorrow with Alec. I hope it is as good as the previews look.
I will go back through and see what I missed commenting on. :scared1:
Later,
Sue

Sue, I've been lost in those same threads as well. Did you see the post about the laminating-like machine at Michael's? It's about $35 and it bonds the laminated image to a magnetic backing. And with a 40 or 50% off coupon, it could be a fun little gadget to have around. I probably won't be able to convince my DW that we need one, although I could hide it in my office :), so I'll just go to the magnetic tape, which actually works very well. I even used it a 3am in the morning during a wind storm to keep our two part screen doors from banging into each other.

What I've really fallen in love with are the room number magnets. You know, the ones that turn the round room number into Mickey's ears, a hat, Goofy, etc. I'm almost thinking of change it every day, with the happy birthday Mickey for the 28th (DS's birthday). We've always cruised the week before his birthday in the past, but obviously this wasn't an option this time around. Plus, in the past it ended up being cheaper. NCL doesn't charge for children under two, so we went on a cruise and returned just a couple of days before and last year on the Magic we did it just before he turned three, so he was significantly cheaper than he would have been this time around had they not offered the KSF.

Kris

Kris,
The first design I created was a sorcerer's Mickey hat for the room number! Well I didn't create it but I personalized it for us. I can't wait. Maybe I will look at the machine you are talking about...what else could I use it for? Hummmmmmmmmm.....:upsidedow:littleangel:  Can't make $$ with it so I probably won't be buying it. We will see.
Good Night all!
Sue

Hi Sue!

It's a possibility, but not a probability. I probably shouldn't have said anything yet because he's still in the interview process. I'll keep you guys posted, but if it worked out wouldn't that be crazy?!?!? We'd be closer to you guys and Steve and Amy! :thumbsup2

Anyway - we're not getting our hopes up. There have been other possibilities in the previous months that didn't work out, so we're having a less than excited attitude about it until we know more. We also couldn't be sure his current job wouldn't make a counter offer that he couldn't refuse. That has happened before.

P.S. I messed up, it's not San Francisco...it's Sacramento. :rolleyes1

On the downside of all of this --- don't know what I would do about school if we moved. That would be tricky! I could make it work though! :) :thumbsup2

Hi Sarah,

I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I've had computer problems but I've got it working for now. We ordered a new cord, let's pray it get's here soon!

NO question is stupid! :thumbsup2 I will explain as best I can. If you have other questions let me know.

Normally, a family has 1 fish extender with a pocket for each person and the name of each person on their pocket. This allows customized gifts to be left, be-it something for a girl vs. a boy, something for an adult vs. a child, etc. If you are in multiple cabins you are more than welcome to have a fish extender for each cabin, with a pocket for each person in that particular room. If you'd rather not buy or make more than one FE, then you can just have 1 and make the others in your party go to 1 particular cabin to check their pocket. For the most part people will "customize" gifts; meaning, age and/or gender appropriate gifts left for different people. But, some people don't. It's really whatever you want to do. Some people leave a gift every day, some people leave a gift only once on the entire length of a sailing. It is really based on what you can do and afford. It's more for the fun of it; there are no guidelines or expectations...just whatever you can and want to do. As far as types of gifts, that is also up to you. Some people get creative and make things hand-made, some people buy stuff from places like Oriental Trading company, etc. It really depends on what you can and are willing to do. There are TONS of threads on here with pictures of FE's and pictures of FE gifts. I don't have the link right now, I'll have to look for it. But, when I find it I will post it here for you! I do have a picture of someone's FE (not mine), so I will paste it below. As you can see from the picture, most of us also enjoy decorating our cabin doors. The cruise ship's stateroom doors are metal, so most of the decorations you see are magnets!

With regards to how it works, it just depends on the group. Some groups have 1 list and everyone leaves gifts for as many of the cabins as they want. Our group (and I think it has a lot to do with the economy right now), has decided to split up our list into smaller groups. At this point we can't say how many cabins/people will be in each group because it will depend on how many cabins and people we have come October. Since I am the sort-of "leader" of the group, in October I will split the list evenly (as best I can) and put everyone into groups. You will be leaving gifts for those cabins/families and they will be leaving gifts for you. You do have the option to also leave gifts for other cabins; however, you must make sure you participate with those in your group. Do not hold me to this, but it looks right now like we will have groups between 7 and 10 cabins....but this could change!

I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Also, feel free to let me know if I failed to answer one of your existing questions. :thumbsup2

I do NOT know who's FE/cabin door this is, I just found the picture online. However, here is a picture of what a typical DISboarder's/FE participant's door looks like! The pink thing is the FE pockets where gifts will be left!
