We are leaving Wednesday for our first trip to Disney. My 6 year old has had the flu since last Monday and missed kindergarten all week. The doctor gave her a shot yesterday to try and make her better fast and said they could do it again Monday if she isn't better. I'm afraid even if she is better she won't have much energy? Plus, I'm really hoping that she has had it for 6 days and none of the rest of the family is sick yet that we are ok?

My 4 year old came home with a note from preschool that someone in her class has chicken pox. The symptoms should show up about the time we are on our trip. She has had the chicken pox shot but could still get it just not as bad.

I asked our pediatrician if we should cancel our trip (we have insurance) but she said no. She thought the chance slim that 4 year old would get chicken pox and that 6 year old should be over the flu. Am I crazy for still going? How easy is it to get medical care for these types of things once we are at Disney? Thanks!

I would go!

We faced the same problem on our last family trip. My DS was released from the hospital, we went home and frantically packed (his sickness took our planned packing days!) and drove for 12 hours to our CM adr. It was QUITE a day. I asked our docs MANY times if I should cancel or go late and they said absolutely NOT! They said that with the concentration of children there, the docs are all very used to sick kiddos and could handle anything better than most places because they get lots of practice. We ended up having a doc come to our hotel about half way through our trip ($175 plus the meds he filled and mixed on the spot) and it was worth it to avoid waiting rooms, pharmacies, etc.

I hope everyone is feeling better soon!

There are several walk in type clinics near by for minor medical needs(ask at the front desk, they should have directions). Celebration hospital is also very close for more serious needs.
What kind of shot di your DD get? The flu won't respond to anitbiotics and I thought anitvirals only worked if given in the first 24/48 hours.
Your DD should be fine by the time you go. Chicken pox rarley strike twice.

You'll have no problem finding medical care in WDW, but let's hope you don't need it. DS5 got sick at the end of one of our trips. The CM at the front desk of OKW directed us to the Centra Care clinic - it's near the Crossroads shopping center. We had a car, but they would have picked us up at our resort if we needed a ride. The nurses were so sweet to DS and the dr was great. We did wait for about an hour before he was seen by the dr, but in the waiting room they had a big screen tv playing Monsters Inc, so DS was occupied by that. I believe there is another walk-in clinic in the area and Celebration Hosp is not far away either. I hope you have a great trip and that everyone is healthy for it! :goodvibes

We had quite the experience back in February with sickness at WDW. My DS3 got strep throat the very first day we were there and was miserable. We took him to the Centra Care that was previously mentioned and they fixed him right up. We were able to medicate him with Tylenol and Motrin while we waited for the antibiotic to do its magic. Unfortunately we were only there for a long weekend, and my DH got the flu the last day we were there. Anyway, it was pretty miserable all around, but it just gave us a good excuse to go back and make up for what we missed!

DD7 got her first ever puking bug on the 2nd day of our February trip. DH and I decided he'd go with her to the doctor- I think it was the previously mentioned CentraCare- they sent a van to pick them up- and I took DS4 to MK for the morning since we were sure he'd get it and had no idea how long it would last. The van service also took them to Walgreen's for prescriptions and OTC meds. DH was VERY happy with the service!

Fortunately, the vomiting was only a 24 hour thing and though her double ear infection made her a bit dizzy, DD went to the parks every day after the initial day. We used a stroller a couple of days until the antibiotics kicked in on the ear infection. DS4 (the puking bug king of the universe who has been known to LICK the metal rails on the Disney buses) never got sick the entire trip!!!!!!!!!

We leave in 12 days and my DD (3 1/2) just came down with a terrible cough/fever on Friday night. I had been sick with some sort of flu the week prior and am still not 100% My DS (14 mths) puked two days in a row earlier last week and has had diarreaha (sp) for a few days. Thank God my wife is a trooper and has not been sick. Hopefully this will all pass in the next few days. My mother is watching our DS while the three of us go. I would hate for anyone to be sick.

OK, as a mom of 6, I can say I have had some experience with this. When I took dd11 for her first bday she had just gotten out of the hospital. The docs said go, so we went. We kept her meds in a little cooler pouch and she was fine.

When we went last Feb '06, we had just gotten back from a wedding in MI (we planned our WDW way before the wedding was planned) and dh and I had both been in the hospital in MI with bronchitis the day before we left MI. Luckily my niece was flying back with us to come to WDW and she was a Godsend. We got home, still feeling ucky, and had one day to pack before leaving. I felt fine the day we left, but dh was still taking meds (I won't take antibiotics for most things). The kids took turns feeling slightly ucky through the trip (you can see it in some pics). They just curled up in the stroller in a blanket and rode from ride to ride. They would always perk up in time for the ride though. Nothing like Disney to make you feel better.

Last story I promise. Our trip in Dec '06, all was fine until the night before we left. dd6 (then 5) woke up puking as we were finishing loading the camper. Well, I said "no way are we not going" so, I grabbled the gallon ziploc bag box and away we went. She had a stack of ziplocs at the ready. She got sick a couple of times on the way. We just zipped the bag, pulled over at the nearest stop, through it away, brushed her teeth and took off again. She got lots of sleep in the van. Once we entered "the disney zone", she never puked again. She was perfectly fine. That is until we were almost home, then she puked one last time, all over my winter coat that she was snuggling with. Luckily it only got on the coat. We pulled over, threw it away (with dh's assurance that I would get a new one) and that was it. She was fine. She never did puke at WDW. I think it was Tinkerbell's pixie dust or something.

As long as your doc says go, go. Don't worry about it. Just rent a stroller and don't push yourselves too hard. Oh, and take extra vitamin C. They make chewables that the kids love. Also, walmart sells Rhino lollipops that are zinc and vit C. They are great at healing and warding off viruses. My kids are rarely sick (once a year max). Last year we were sick after being in Michigan except dd6, she was not sick that time, she waited until Dec on that disney trip. LOL This year we all just had a bug, but that was the first time this year. We just load up ont he vit C and they live on the zinc lollipops after being around someone sick. It works for us!!!

Hope everyone feels better!!! :grouphug:

AS long as you don't bring a child who has a throw up bug on a plane or in a park you should be fine. Just let them get better so they can have a great time!
