I’m taking my kids and their friends to Disney in July. We are renting a house at Windsor Hills. I’ve always rented a car when we stay off property however prices are really high. We either need to rent a 12 person van that I would drive or two cars and have me 23 yr old son as the additional driver of the second car (extra fees for additional driver and his age). So I’m leaning towards Uber for the week and scheduling a car service to and from the airport, also a Walmart delivery. We will go to the parks 4 times and Disney Springs at least twice. Most likely go to a restaurant once and the outlets. Does Ubersound reasonable or will two XLs every time add up.y best car rental scenario has me spending 1,700 with rental and parking (that s without additional insurance).

At that price, I would lean towards uber/lyft. I use this site to get pricing ideas.

Are you 8 total? If so, you might consider a car service to take part/most of the group plus luggage to/from the airport and then price out an 8 passenger van/SUV. You could also check for a closer car rental place to your vacation rental and just rent for the days not needing airport transit and everyone use the service to/from.

FWIW Rideguru is currently understating, sometimes by alot, Uber fares. Rudeguru doesn't seem to accurate reflect price gouging via dynamic pricing

Thanks, I haven't had to use during Covid so hadn't heard the gouging issue.

I would do Uber. Even though your plan now is to do things as one big group, as the trip goes on there might be reasons why you decide to split into smaller groups anyway.

This is so true!! We have 5 kids three of them are millennials. We wanted to go eat and they wanted to go to the bar.
I would go with uber/ lyft .
Everyone will get discounts with new accounts.

Things may be different in July, but my family of 4 found ourselves waiting 15-30 mins for an Uber XL and paying $50 a ride on Disney property. This was in March.

I would be afraid of waiting a VERY long time for two XLs and paying a pretty penny.

We are Uber fans. If I went back in a time when a regular Uber only held 3, I would absolutely rent a car.

Get the big van and put your son as an additional driver. There are companies that don't charge extra for young drivers or the young driver age is 21. Trying to co-ordinate multiple cars around the Orlando area right now through Uber or Lyft would be too frustrating for me, and probably wouldn't save you any real money. If your party wants to be at the parks at rope drop, leave property at park close or do anything at the times others want to do things, you are going to get hit with "Surge pricing" Which is really just price gouging at popular times.

Be aware of luggage room from the airport. We had 8 people and with 12 suitcases, and 8 carryons, we barely fit in a 12 passenger van with our luggage . Granted we overpack with one suitcase being hoodies, baseball caps, and extra shoes for teen boys. But you get my point

If you have Costco, you can get the additional driver fee waived too.

Do you all plan to stick together? How many total will there be? Adults vs. children? Or are they all adults?

Let's be clear it isn't gouging as Uber is in the money business. Surge pricing evens out supply and demand. When there is a surge of people needing rides that outweighs the supply the prices rise to even out the demand. If you are willing to wait then the price will eventually go down. I get that folks don't like it but it works. I remember once I was waiting outside a restaurant in NYC trying to hail a cab with a client and it was impossible but Uber had a big surge price. At that point I had a million dollar contract on the line with that client and a $100 ride across town with the client was worth it at that moment.

Under surge pricing Uber shared a significant amount of the surcharge with the drivers. Surge pricing was intended to motivate more drivers to work and increase supply.

Uber no longer calls it surge pricing. It's now dynamic pricing. Uber keeps the money. It does nothing increase the number of drivers currently working. It's a money grab. Although it legally may not be price gouging, it is price gouging using common usage.

I'd go with the rental van. Ubers are going to add up quickly. Additionally, car rental prices constantly fluctuate, so keep checking with the various companies and deal sites. You will likely find a better price.

I just typed in Windsor Hills to Disney Springs in the Uber app and its estimating a fare of roughly $22 for an UberXL. Obviously, this cost will vary depending on exactly where in Windsor Hills your pick-up is, which park you're going to, if surge pricing is in effect. etc. But for the sake of estimation, lets round to $25 per UberXL per trip for round numbers. By the time you go to each of the 4 parks and Disney Springs twice, you'd be roughly at $600 in Uber fares. Add another $200 for roundtrip airport transportation in two UberXLs. Add another $200 to estimate for variables like Walmart, outlets, restaurants, etc. That would put you at roughly $1000 in Uber fares, estimating high and understanding there's many variables but you can narrow it down by using your exact address of where you're staying. Using Uber would still be roughly $700 cheaper than renting a car and paying for parking. You lose some flexibility by not having your own car, but Uber is almost always readily available and you still have flexibility within that budget to use Uber more if needed.

Is there 8 of you total? You could also likely squeeze into UberX's - 3 in the back, 1 in the front. Wouldn't work to and from the airport with luggage, but I have frequently squeezed in UberX's with my husband and parents and its been fine. Never had to turn one away. UberX would be even cheaper than XL.

As an alternative option, at least for the airport transfers, is hiring Tony Hinds. Him and his drivers drive 12 passenger vans. He charges one flat rate so it doesn't matter how many people you have, and he includes a complimentary 30 minute grocery stop which would eliminate the need for a Walmart run. His pricing is on par with other private car services, but since you can all fit in the same van, it would probably cheaper than relying on UberXL to and from the airport. He also will assist with luggage inside the airport.

Bear in mind that with current COVID restrictions, an UberX will only take 3 people, and an UberXL will take 5. No one is allowed to sit in the front seat. The group would need 2 Ubers for each trip.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. Even still, my estimations in the above post were based on two UberXLs, so I'd still assert using Ubers would come out considerably cheaper if they've priced out the rental car(s) and parking at $1700.

But 8 could fit in 1 XL + 1 X (if they're skinny enough).

You might want to look into a car service (like a towncar/limo service) for your trips to and from the airport and then plan to use Uber for your other transportation needs during your trip. By doing the car service, you can plan ahead and they will be there for you when you arrive (and upon departure). Several of the car service places have vehicles for larger parties, so your whole party and all of their luggage could fit in one vehicle together.
