Disney Visa vs Target RedCard (which is the better payoff in the longrun?)

I feel like having too many credit cards would not be good for my credit and I already have 2 (a Discover and a Visa). So I'm thinking with going for only one new one. Which of the two things in the title I can use toward Disney would be the better card to use in the long run (for Disney and for basic savings)?

I'm not a big Target shopper. I feel their prices and lot of stuff is expensive but I do occasionally shop there. I did had a Disney Visa in the past but had to drop it. So I'm not sure if they'll let me apply for it again.

Thanks

It all depends. The Target card gets you 5% off of all qualifying Target purchases, but it can only be used at Target. The Disney Visa is 1%-2% back in Disney rewards dollars (which can only be used at Disney and a few other places) but the Visa card itself is pretty universally accepted. If you're not a big Target shopper, why would you get a card that can only be used there.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time with either of those cards if I was not a Target shopper looking to add just one more card to my wallet. I would look for a universally accepted card that would give me better rewards that can be used at a variety of locations.

If you shop occasionally the Target RedCard debit card is the way to go if you don't want another credit card. It pulls funds from your bank account via ACH instead of having to pay it like a credit card. You get the same 5% off but it doesn't go on your credit report like the RedCard credit card does. And the 5% stacks on top of any Cartwheel or other discounts. For example I bought a $20 gift card and only paid $19 with the RedCard.

The Disney Visa rewards are not great and we only use it for the free picture at EPCOT.

The more credit cards you have actually can help you in the long run. more credit will bring up your total utilization. 30% should be the max you should go to.
When it comes to finding out what credit cards, the best thing to do is to find out what exactly is your biggest expense. Groceries? gas? Food? etc. Then it comes down to what you want to do with it. you want to redeem for flight? you want it to pay for hotels? etc.

To add, opening up credit cards (applying for credit) WILL temporarily lower your score for having inquiries on your report but it is minimal and temporary because like Albort said it will increase your total credit available and lower your utilization so long as you don't use much. It may drop a couple points immediately and then rise back up and INCREASE when you keep your balances low and pay on time.

If you aren't a frequent Target shopper, I would not get their card. A lot of people use it to get 5% off of Disney GC's but you can also buy Disney GC's with the same 5% discount from BJ's online and use any credit card you want.

The Disney card does get you rewards specifically for Disney, but at only 1% back it's a very slow earner.

If you only want one more card I'd look for a card that earns the highest percentage back on the categories you spend the most on, such as groceries, gas, etc. Or if you don't want to worry about spending categories, get a card like the Citi Double Cash that earns 2% back on every purchase.

These would not be the two I'd choose from either if I could just open 1 card. But, I'd open Disney Visa because that is $200 free money right away with the No Annual Fee card and you get the exclusive Star Wars Meet & Greet plus the unlocked photos for that and super cheap prints at the Parks for both Disney Visa Meet & Greets. You also get 10% off at many restaurants and shops. All Target gives you is 5% off. You can get 6% off Disney gift cards at any grocery store with Amex Blue Cash Preferred so Target cc would not be worth it. As PP noted you could get Disney Visa and Target debit and get benefits of both.

If I got both would it affect my credit situation in any way?

Also, does the Target Redcard have a fee, or minimum spending requirement?

Temporarily your score may dip due to the inquiry. Long term your score likely may go up due to lower utilization. I have opened 32 new cards in the last 2 years and my score is basically the same as 2 years ago.

Target debit does not have any fees or minimums, you just use that instead of youe bank debit card at Target only and it pulls from your checking a couple of days later.
The Disney Visa and Target Visa would each pull your credit.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Since you don't shop much at Target, I don't think the Red card makes much sense. Disney VISA is only going to give you 1% back on purchases and only in "Disney dollars".

Citi Doublecash gives you 2% -- 1% when you make the purchase and an additional 1% when you pay it off. That's straight cash back that you can use however you want. The DoubleCash is also a MasterCard which will add diversity to your current VISA and Discover cards

Sorry to go on a tangent but.... what super cheap photo options with the dis visa? I'm only aware of the one free pic

@hsmamato2 update: We just did Disney Visa photos this week and found out they don't offer the $2 prints anymore. That stinks but there is a new twist. Your Disney Visa Photopass pics are still unlocked for free downloads AND if you use ios (not Android) you can add the fun Disney borders including the Star Wars border that was previously only available to print in the Parks, not part of Photopass online. We haven't tried that yet as I need to log in on husband's iPhone to add the frames, but just wanted to update the new perk. Not sure what the perk is at WDW, this is how Disneyland and DCA are doing it right now.

You don't get the free 5x7 per day anymore, but now you can get $2 5x7s each day. It is actually better for us because it is always hard to pick which one we wanted free. They let us print as many different Disney Visa poses as we wanted (full price for other Photopass locations) for $2 each. Also, we've been able to see Visa pics from previous visits (linked to our APs) and from previous days, and they let us make prints of those as well.

I agree with what everyone's posted. I would go for the Disney Visa IF you would use the perks. That's why I keep it around and earn money on it, for the perks, because you can use the Rewards Redemption card to get most perks the same as showing/using the Visa card. (Also if you buy packages or plan on using it for a cruise you get 6 months 0% interest as a perk.) If we're going to eat table service on our visit, a lot of the places we'd go are included in the 10% off dining perk, so I use my rewards to get a free meal with a discount.

Lately I only earn enough for what we estimate we'll use the perks for, because otherwise I may as well use any of my other cashback credit cards to make the purchase, earn the 1% (or more) for that charge, then use my earnings to pay off the charge. So it's still free but I also earned cashback on it.
