Does anyone know if you can use your disney visa rewards points at the Disney store to buy disney gift cards? I have points that need to be used so that I can close the account. Thanks for any help!

unless something has changed since last year, you can not buy gift cards. When you call and request to cash out your points they send them to you on a Disney gift card. You have a year to use the card.

Just a minor clarification: It's not a Disney Gift Card. It is a Disney Rewards Card and it expires on Dec. 31 of the year which follows the year that you requested it.

You probably will not be allowed to purchase a Disney Gift Card at the Disneystore by using the Rewards Card. But if you go online to disneystore.com, you can order Disney Gift Cards and pay for the order with your Rewards Card. Just be careful not to purchase the disneystore.com gift card. That one is only valid for making purchases at the online store and not at the theme parks.

I already have the rewards card with $500 on it - I would like to purchase gift cards now so that I can close the credit card account. We are visiting Disney in October, so I could use it then, but I just wanted to use it sooner!

I did use my rewards card to buy gift cards at the Disney Store. Didn't have any trouble at all.
You're not supposed to be allowed to be able to use it to purchase "cash or its equivalent" but there's a big difference between what the terms of service state and what can happen in real life. Being able to purchase Disney Gift Cards using the Rewards Card at the Disney Store is definitely a case of YMMV.

a little ot-- my rewards card from last time has a exp date of 12/12 on it.... we are taking a trip in december of 2012 it will still be good in december for the whole month right??? or do I have to order a new one? thanks!

Yes up until 11:59ET on 12/31, even if you use it California (3 hours behind or in Hawaii (5 hours behind the East Coast).

You can absolutely buy gift cards with a Disney Rewards card. The redemption card acts as a Visa card, not a gift card. As mentioned, it is the best way to spend your points if your redemption card is about to expire because Disney gift cards have no expiration date. :thumbsup2

Again, it is a case of YMMV. The Terms and Conditions specifically states (bolding mine):
11. Reward Dollars have no cash or monetary value and may not be redeemed for cash or its equivalent, and any unused portion (whether in your Card Account or transferred to your Redemption Card) is not returnable as cash.

Gift cards are a "cash equivalent".

And the Rewards Card does not act like a Visa. You cannot use it anywhere but specific Disney locations. You cannot spend more than the amount that is on the card. It acts more like a gift card than like a credit card. The exception being that it expires.

However, I do agree that it can be possible to purchase Disney Gift Cards with the Rewards Card at the Disney Store. Not every store will allow it. And if that is the case with your own Disney Store, buying the Disney Gift Card online at disneystore.com is a workable alternative.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant it acts like a Visa when buying gift cards from the Disney Store, not anywhere else. At least that is what Chase told me anyway.

I tried to buy gift cards at the Disney Store and was told I couldn't. But I did purchase several cards online at disneygiftcard.com using my rewards card with no problem.

Just wanted to update what happened when I took my rewards card to the Disney store to buy gift cards - I purchased a $500 disney gift card with no problem. I was very doubtful when the sales girl told me I could use my rewards card - I made her call the store manager to make sure. When she rang up the gift card, she had no problems using my rewards card as payment. Hopefully this will help others who need to use up rewards dollars before they expire - it was a very simple, easy process to convert them into a gift card!
