Did anyone buy Disney's unity candles, especially the ones with Mickey heads? They sell them for $55 and $65 respectively. That's about twice the cost in town and I might be able to make them even cheaper myself.

My question is what do they use to adhere the crystals onto the candles? I did a test last night with some glass beads and white glue. It sticks, but falls off if you use a bit of pressure. I did a search on the Internet and it looks like you can buy candle glue. I've also read hot glue (I have a hot glue gun, but I didn't try it because it's currently misplaced). Does anyone have any recommendations to try?

Unity candles — Traditionally used as a way to signify the joining of two families - each mother (or designated guest) would light the outside two tapers at the start of the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom then take the flame from the tapers and together, light the center pillar candle. A beautiful way to signify that "two become one".
All candles are available in ivory or white and feature pearl or Swarovski crystal accents. They come as a set of three candles - 1 pillar and 2 tapers. (Mickey accents are only available on the larger pillar candle.)
Single pearl or single crystal accents - $55.00
Mickey pearl or Mickey crystal accents - $65.00

I made them myself, way too expensive to purchase when you can do it yourself. I just used crazy glue. It worked for me Good luck!!

I had the pillar with the mickey crystals. They are embedded in the candle ..just barely sticking out. Give it a go! :thumbsup2 GL

$55-65 seems like a lot to pay for a unity candle. Granted, that I would probably keep on my mantle at home forever, but that still seems like a lot. I'm curious to know what some of you past brides have done. Do you have pics of your candles/ arrangements?

Why don't you just get a set at like Michaels and but on the rhinestones? You can make them look like Mickey heads. I have used the stones that go one cell phones, for everything.

I used hot glue for my candles.......I didn't even think about making the crystals into Mickey heads!! I just wanted to add some more sparkle to them. But anwyay, the hot glue really doesn't stick very well. It comes off easily. So maybe try using crazy glue or something else that will stick better! Super glue didn't work either....lol!

The ones I used have sticky backs. They have stuck fine. I put pink ribbon on the bottom and pink crystal Mickey heads

I found a candlemaking book on my bookshelf. I must've bought it thinking I had more time for hobbies! It has instructions on making all sorts of candles with glitter, scents, foil, beads, paint, imprints and so forth. A quick peek through the book says wax glue is what you use as an adhesive, so I'll look for it at Michaels this weekend. I bought my glass beads at Michaels, but they don't have the sticky backs. :confused3 Anyway, my experiment looks lovely! I bought two sizes of beads so I could make the ears smaller. The only issue is the mickey heads will fall off without careful handling. I'll see how well wax glue performs.

Michaels sells unity candle sets. Their regular price is fairly expensive, but once you use their 40% or 50% off coupons in their weekly flyer (at least in Canada) it drops to less than half of Disney. It might be even cheaper buying just plain white candles separately.

For those who glued their beads: how did you keep the glue off your fingers? :rotfl:

Oh, one more thing. I'm getting married at Sea Breeze Point. My planner says they provide some kind of cover for the unity candles to keep them from blowing out. Would they still do that if I bring my own candles? Maybe I'll ask next time I can get a hold of her.

how cool..If you make them I would love to see them..:thumbsup2

Could you use twizers to put them on with? Then not get glue on your fingers?

Yeah mine didn't have sticky backs either! Good luck with whatever you try!!

And to keep the glue off my fingers, I didn't...............and I was using hott glue and it HURT!! :lmao:

Just an update.

I'll be finished my unity candle this weekend. I found out about wax glue. It's like a block of wax with glue in it. You have to heat it up using a double boiler and then use it after it has melted. When it becomes solid again, it'll hold. I couldn't find any of it.

I did find a candle glue made by Jones Tones. They have a web site with all their products. It comes in a plastic bottle and looks a lot like white glue. I'm not sure it's much better than white glue, but it's what I've been using.

Tweezer didn't work for me. I kept dropping my beads and can't put enough pressure on the bead to press into the candle. In the end, I just used my fingers and washed the excess glue off regularly. That's important to keep the glue from drying all over the rhinestones.

Now for my question:
I asked Disney if they provide candle holders. Disney Floral (after I waited over a week and finally "complained" to my planner about their slow responses) said the unity candle sits on the table with no stand. For outdoor locations (I'm at SBP), they rent hurricane globes for $15. That seems expensive to me, but I've never owned one. How much do they cost to buy? What keeps the tapers from going out if Disney doesn't provide globes for them too?

Also, they have no candle holders for the tapers and put them in a cylinder filled with sand. If you buy your unity candle set from Disney, is that all they do for you?

Sorry I can't answer all of your questions but I can answer this one!! :) I bought ALL of my Hurricanes from Hobby Lobby...during their 50% candle holder sale. I did buy the smaller ones, though. So instead of paying $1.99, I paid $.99!! The larger ones (which would hold a "unity" type candle) are $3.99 I believe. So if you can get them on a 1/2 off week, you could get them for $2 bucks a piece! :)

I've been slowly working on my unity candle. I bought an ivory pillar candle from michael's and swarovski crystals. I'm putting them on like mickey heads with a fast drying tacky glue. The glue really seems to be holding well. I can only do a little at a time so that it dries before i move it. But I think it looks as good if not better than the Disney ones. Good luck to all of you that may be doing the same thing. I'll post pics as soon as I'm done!

I bought Disney's unity candles as they were one of the details that got missed as we got closer to the day. I had a huge table flower arrangement in front of the candles. I don't even remember what they sat on.

I will say this, make sure somebody keeps an eye on them. Mine were actually lost somewhere between the wedding and the reception. Disney had to mail me a new set a few weeks after the wedding. While I'm pleased to have the set, it's sad that I don't have the candles that were part of that day.
