Going to Disney with two teens and I really like that I can let them roam around knowing that they can charge food to the room with their Magic Bands. Does that work at Disney Springs also or do I need to give them real money?

When the system is working, it works at Disney Springs. But when I was there in March 2016, the whole system went down and there was no charging anyplace - not even the credit card system was up. The only way to pay was with cash.

So you may want to either make sure they have a little cash to get something to eat just in case.

*Fixed the year. As much as I wish I had a Time Traveling DeLorean I don't.

Wait, you were there in the future? :)

Hopefully it was just a glitch that doesn't happen often. I'm sure if the system is having frequent problems like that, it will be a priority to make sure it gets fixed. Especially if credit cards don't even work.

You can seriously charge Disney Springs restaurants to room accounts via Magic Bands? Can't charge your room account at Downtown Disney at DL. Very happy to hear this! :cool1:

I was in Disney Springs in May and charged everything to the Magic Band - we had drinks at Jock Lindsey's, ate at Deluxe Burger and Amorette's and I bought stuff at Zara and Kate Spade - all with the band! I never bring any cash when we go to WDW except a few dollars for tips, and I'm fine. We are from Germany so I would lose money exchanging too much for dollars at a bank beforehand and if I ever needed any cash when there I would just go to the ATM with my credit card. So you definitely do not need to give them cash I think, that the system goes down only happened that one time afaik and you cannot plan for such an unlikely event anyway. If that happens Disney has to find a a way I bet a lot of people would not have cash on them.

I would send them with a few dollars as well. The system went down on our summer trip (June 15th - 25th.... I can't remember which day). We tried to purchase several items around world showcase and we were told that the system was down. I can't remember if we tried to buy food at that time so I'm not sure if it is on a different system. Anyways, it was quite disappointing to not be able to buy the items that we wanted.

Time travel is real! Us Scientists are keeping it for ourselves right now....... :teleport: Just kidding. I need to change that - I meant March 2016. LOL

I think you mean 2016 and I was there also, they went to the paper system for us and we didn't need cash (or maybe that is a last resort if you don't have cash on you)

EDITED:

My daughter just corrected me that it was in april they did the paper.. maybe after that first day they found a new alternative to cash.

I have had the system down at least twice. have a back up method for the tragic bands. (Credit cards worked!)

When it went down during Food and Wine last fall there was no "paper" system it was "Sorry we can't process the charge".
