Disney should institute price breaks for health care workers like they do for the military

What the health care front line people are facing now with Covid 19 reminds me of the NYC firefighters faced on 9/11.

I rember 9/11 very well although to be fair I was only 16 when it happened and I live in Florida so my memory might not be as strong of those that are older and/or lived closer to where it happend

But this seems a 100 times worse then 9/11 but why it is worse from my point of view

Business are closed, the only business that I remember clossing that day is Disney and other big them parks
I was still going to school the only thing that was different is the news was played in almost every class vrs the traditional teaching
Yes life changed more security after the fact
Last but not least we where not told not to see local family for 30+ days

I am not trying to be insensitive for those personally affected just saying why it bothers me

I personally think that they have discounts for military because of the fairly low wages military traditionally get. (Ignoring tricare, pension after 20 years etc)

Wh nurses and doctors are kinda known for decent wages.

Because that grocery store clerk, or truck driver, or gas station attendant, isn't going to be the one you call or see if you get this virus.

given that the vast majority of people who get it won’t have to call *anyone*, nah. The professionals who do see people who end up having a giant case of it are doing the jobs they signed up for...

But this seems a 100 times worse then 9/11 but why it is worse from my point of view

The previous poster mentioned firefighters specifically. Not everyone.

They are the ones fighting this war. Can't thank them enough so it's the least we can push for.

I want to see this happen. Who's with me on this?
I’m not with you. They are making a very good income often with over time pay. They chose the profession. So many are out of work and going to lose many things. These nice folks will continue on earning lots of money. I would rather see them pay into charity to help people so effected by this get back on their feet financially.

First of all, I do NOT think you need to give them discounts. But many, many doctors and nurses are suffering financially. My husband's practice laid off people and is looking at getting a loan to help them out. If you are an ER, internist, trauma doc, or pulmonologist, then you are ok. Other specialties are barely seeing many patients at all. All elective services are cancelled. People have to stay at home. So do not assume that all docs are doing well. We are older and hubby is retired now. We have savings. We will be helping people ( and are) But the ones that are in their 30's have massive school debt they are trying to pay. ( Some hundreds of thousands of dollars for college and med school) So do not assume these rich guys are doing fine. Some are, but not all.

Dcl likes to charge teachers more. That’s why the prices are very high when they can go.
Again we need an “unlike” button because yes, that stinks. Do the Swan and Dolphin still give teacher discounts now that they are owned by Marriott? DD is going to be a teacher and she definitely has a calling for it but I am so sad when I look at the startling salaries :(

But how would they tell who worked the front line and who worked in a doctor's office that never saw any "action" One of my friends is an RN but her dr is only doing phone appt and then sending to urgent care if they need more then Tylenol.
What about grocery store clerks who have no masks, unless they buy the masks themselves?
The majority of military don’t see action either.

9/11 only caused massive chaos in a few places where this is going to reach everyone eventually. NYC needs more health care workers, the mayor is begging for help. Our town sent over a couple of ambulances and volunteer EMT’s. I can see the comparison, it’s like the fire fighters having to deal with 9/11 in every city and town.

I can see it as well in that srnce, and like I said very young mentally at the time so I dont rember everything, for example did not rember nyc has for help in that way but not hard to belive either

Fire trucks from all over my state went in, I could hear it from my home. Now ambulances are going in, it appears very similar.

I understand what you are trying to say...for the most part, 9/11 effected the entire country emotionally. However, things were pretty much functioning normally relatively quickly for the majority of people not in NYC in terms of school, restaurants, activities, sports, socializing, etc. I understand why ppl make the comparison, especially people in New York, but I also see your point.

As for the OP question, I agree that it is a nice idea, but hard to implement and that there are a lot of people putting themselves at risk right to keep things functioning as best they can. I like how @wenrob put it - it's a team sport right now.

But if the idea is to say "thank you" to the workers on the front line of Covid-19, those "barely seeing many patients at all" wouldn't be eligible for any discount.

I must really stink at this because people misunderstand my posts. I DO NOT WANT MEDICAL WORKERS TO GET DISCOUNTS. My post was a rebuttal to the person who was like the doctors are making tons of money, don't worry about them. This shutdown is affecting them as well as anyone else, and many of them who are just a few years in probably have massive amounts of school debt. That was my only point. I do not think you should give discounts to medical personnel. As someone mentioned there are many others behind the scenes who should get it if you do that. Not feasible for Disney.

I just had this discussion the other day about comparing it to 9/11. They are so different, but yet created a huge and long-lasting impact on our lives.

We still say, "pre 9/11" when referring to things we did differently before that day. I think this will be the same. I truly feel "before Covid-19" will be in our vernacular from now on.

9/11 was a surprise. We were attacked. It brought us to a standstill, but only for a short time. This is bringing us to a standstill for an extended period of time. Both devastating, but hit you differently. 9/11 was a gut punch. Covid-19 is getting 10,000 paper cuts, slowly, over time.

We will rebound like we did back in 2001. It took us time, and this will take us more time ... but we will do it. 9/11 was instantly devastating because you could see it, and for people like myself our jobs did a 180. Covid-19 will be more devastating over time, but the fight is invisible, and the recovery will be slower and longer.

Both awful. Both will impact people differently. All depends on your life circumstances.

But just like 9/11, our world changed. :sad1:

I would love to see it happen for those who are working during this time frame, especially nurses. I am biased as my daughter is an ICU nurse and has already been tested once. Yes she went to school for this and right now is still paying off her school debt and her husband has been laid off as he is non essential. They have 3 boys that need their mom and her income.

When she catches this virus, not IF but WHEN, as she is exposed for 12 hours every shift she works she will have a good chance of not making it as she has asthma and already has compromised lungs. If she brings it home one of my grandsons has a good chance of being a statistic as he has 2 heart murmurs. She still goes to work every shift knowing this. One of her co-works is in critical condition because she caught it while working and they aren't sure she will survive. She cannot get early shopping hours at most places because she is just a "nurse". She cannot get cleaning supplies to try and sanitize as much of her car and house because people have hoarded them.

She has watched doctors diagnose from the doorway and not even go into a patients room because they are afraid of getting the virus but she goes in with one mask to last her entire 12 hour shift. Not one mask per patient, ONE MASK for her to wear while treating ALL of her patients.

I cannot see her or my grandsons any time soon as we can't risk her passing it on to her father who would not survive with multiple risk factors. I used to see the grandsons at least once a week. This is hard and I spend every day in fear that I will get the phone call that she is showing symptoms and tested positive. I would not even be able to see my daughter if she were dying in the hospital.

The next time you are in a hospital look at who is with you most of the time - the nurses!!! I am thankful for all the nurses, techs, x-ray techs, truckers, grocery store workers, etc., but I am extremely proud of my daughter and pray every day that she will survive this.

All military spend time away from family, Basic/Boot and then specialized training. Depending on your MOS you can be away for weeks for training. Plus like another poster mentioned they get crap for pay. So military is a different situation.

My BIL was a marine for 18 years. Yes, the pay is crappy, but they got free housing, free medical for the whole family, and a commissary on base that sold food and clothes at a reduced price. Plus he got a free education that when he got out of the military, was able to get a job at a good company for good pay. That counts for something.

. They are making a very good income often with over time pay. They chose the profession.

Yes, some physicians & nurses volunteered to care for an unprecedented numbers of patients with a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease with inadequate supplies & PPE as If they were in a 3rd world country. And you should be thanking your lucky stars they are showing up to work every day. At least, every day until it makes them sick too. But like everyone else, most of them never imagined this happening either. I’m an RN for 43 years. No medical professional I know went into their profession “signing up” for this. I don’t expect Disney to give a discount to any specific profession, ever.

And you know, we could apply they “they signed up for it” & “just doing their job” to the military too. I find those statements offensive no matter who you apply them to.

Maybe she need to look at where she lives. Teachers in our area are paid very well. They start right out of college at about $50K, quickly moving into the 60s. The majority of teachers in the 2 districts that cover our town make over $80K & many make well over $100K. That means they make as much as or more than most nurses. Without working the nights, weekends & holidays, including Christmas, that nurses are. Teachers in our area can afford a Disney vacation just as easily as anyone else can.
