Just heard on the local news today, that the US Poatal Service will start issuing in sets of three or four, stamps depicting Disney characters. The first set will be released late spring/early summer.

Has the USPS ever done this before? I'm willing to bet Eisner is wishing he could get a percentage of the postage just because its using Disney characters. Sounds weird cause usually Disney has TOTAL rights to anything ftom the company, unless the government has a higher priviledge I suppose....

Wasn't there a series of stamps with Warner Brother characters (Bugs Bunny) a few years back. The post office has been doing a long series of entertainment related stamps.

And changes are that Disney will get a cut.

During the Christmas parade they mentioned a Mickey stamp like they were excited about it.

It's my understanding that Disney (or Warner Bros. for the Looney Tunes series) receives the same licensing fee for putting character images on USPS stamps as they would for anything else. But past that, they don't get a penny off each stamp sold or anything like that.

Prior recent stamp sets that featured characters include a Looney Tunes series in 2001 and in 2000, a Peanuts series in 2001, Daffy Duck in 1999, Sylvester & Tweety in 1998, and Bugs Bunny in 1997. In addition, the "Celebrate the Century" stamps featured Snow White (1930s), Sesame Street (1970s), The Cat in the Hat (1950s), the "Smiley Face" character (1960s), Cabbage Patch Kids (1980s), Barbie (1960s), and Superman (1930s).

Back in the 60's shortly after Walt's death, there was a commerative US stamp with him surrounded by his characters.
Other countries have been putting Disney characters on stamps for years.

Yes....I've been collecting Disney stamps from other countries for many years. I've always thought it odd that they had not been issued here in Walt's home country.
