Disney planes

My nephew loves the first planes and when he saw a commercial for Planes 2 he looked at his uncle (my boyfriend) and asked "can I go?" It will be his first movie in theaters that we think he will make it all the way through. Seeing his face light up when he was told Yes was so cute and priceless.

Just because your kids or the critica didn't like it doesn't mean there aren't other people out there that actually liked it.

Fairytalelover, it is a shame that someone who clearly loves Disney this much (judging by the number of trips taken, and even a Disney wedding) is so sour. Kellykins1218 stated that they loved Planes and know kids who love Planes and you respond almost aggressively with multiple back to back posts just to show them how wrong they are. What is that?!

Businesses exist to make money, and Disney does so while interjecting magic into our every day lives. If you (and some critics) don't like a particular Disney movie, that is fine, but there is no need to be rude to someone who did enjoy it.

LOL! Sour? I'm not sour. I just didnt like Planes and neither did many others. I was just posting information to show that the movie was not that successful. Just because I love Disney doesnt mean I have to blindly like everything they do:rolleyes1

Of course there are "some" people who liked it...again mostly toddlers. But the fact is that it was not received very well nor globally liked as much as Cars which is which movie from which this was a spin off. That's just a fact. :surfweb:

You came off sour to me too. Really no need to quadruple post at Kellykins.

Wow you do come off as sour. When someone says their kid, or grandkid, or neice or nephew enjoy some thing is it really necessary to quote several critics' reviews?

It may be fact that it was not well recieved by critics but it has been a massive monitary success for Disney.

Planes only cost the company 50 million to make but it's box office worldwide gross was 219,788,712.

In comparison Princess and the Frog cost 105 Million but only grossed 267,045,765 world wide.

I liked Cars a lot, dislike Cars2 and think Planes is absolutely awful.
Planes felt like they couldn't be bothered to have an original plot or characters and just ripped off Cars but left out any heart.

My kids don't care, they happily watch any movie and plot, pacing, depth and character development don't matter to them. :3dglasses

Generally speaking Planes did not do well critically. It did make a decent profit financially and has a ton of merchandise which sells well. Part of the reason for the movie was because toy planes are an easy seller.

HOWEVER no matter how popular or successful a movie is Disney takes a long time to build an attraction, excepting the temporary Frozen festival, the most recent movie to have any attraction other than a meet and greet in Disney World is Finding Nemo. If you think Pixar is cheating then we have to go all the way back to either Dinosaur, which is arguable, as it was just a name change of an existing attraction or Aladdin and his magic carpet ride.

(when I started the post, I didn't think I'd have to go back, that far)

I'm just curious how the heck this franchise got a sequel in about 18 months and its taken over a decade to finally announce an Incredibles sequel.

Sorry, but this movie was made to go directly to DVD and did not get a rave review from anyone.....Disney is trying really hard to gain the same popularity for Planes as it did for Cars which is why they are doing Planes 2 etc....but it's not working...

Reception
Critical response
Planes received generally negative reviews from critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 26% approval rating with an average rating of 4.6/10 based on 112 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "Planes has enough bright colors, goofy voices, and slick animation to distract some young viewers for 92 minutes -- and probably sell plenty of toys in the bargain -- but on nearly every other level, it's a Disney disappointment."[34] Another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, calculated a score of 39 based on 32 reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[35]

Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle gave the film two and half stars out of four, saying, "Many will enter theaters thinking this is a Pixar film, with the raised expectations that accompany that mistake. But even cynical animation fans will see there's quality here. After a little turbulence, Planes comes in for a nice landing."[37] Alonso Duralde of The Wrap gave the film a positive review, saying, "As shameless an attempt by Disney to sell more bedspreads to the under-10s as Planes is, it nonetheless manages to be a minor lark that will at least mildly amuse anyone who ever thrust their arms outward and pretended to soar over the landscape."[38] Justin Chang of Variety gave the film a negative review, saying, "Planes is so overrun with broad cultural stereotypes that it should come with free ethnic-sensitivity training for especially impressionable kids."[39] James Rocchi of MSN Movies gave the film one out of five stars, saying, "Planes borrows a world from Cars, but even compared to that soulless exercise in well-merchandised animated automotive adventure, Planes is dead in its big, googly eyes and hollow inside."[40] Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a negative review, saying, "Despite the more aerodynamic setting, this Cars 3D offshoot emerges as an uninspired retread."[41] Jordan Hoffman of the New York Daily News gave the film one out of five stars, saying, "The jokes in Planes are runway flat, and parents will likely reach for the air-sickness bag."[42]

Bill Goodykoontz of The Arizona Republic gave the film two out of five stars, saying, "Planes was originally scheduled to be released straight to video. Although the smallest children might like bits and pieces of it, there's nothing in the movie that suggests why Disney strayed from its original plan."[43] David Hiltbrand of The Philadelphia Inquirer gave the film one out of four stars, saying, "The animated film has all the hallmarks of a straight-to-DVD project — inferior plot, dull writing, cheap drawing — perhaps because it was intended for the bargain bin at Target, Walmart, and Costco."[44] Jen Chaney of The Washington Post gave the film one and a half stars out of four, saying, "This film is 100 percent devoid of surprises. It's the story of an underestimated underdog that's like every other kid-friendly, life-coachy story about an underestimated underdog."[45] Rafer Guzman of Newsday gave the film one and a half stars out of four, saying, "If Planes were a reasonably priced download, you'd gladly use it to sedate your kids during a long car ride. As a theatrical, 3-D release, however, Planes will sedate you, too."[46] Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times gave the film two out of five stars, saying, Planes is for the most part content to imitate rather than innovate, presumably hoping to reap a respectable fraction of the box office numbers of Cars and Cars 2, which together made hundreds of millions of dollars."[47]

Goodness, you sure seem to believe what the critics say. I didn't know anyone cared what movie critics thought anymore. :rotfl2:

Just because you didn't like it doesn't make it ok to crap on others that did.

I'm just curious how the heck this franchise got a sequel in about 18 months and its taken over a decade to finally announce an Incredibles sequel.

Because it was designed as a series of movies, there are two sequels that were made at the same time as the original and are just getting a staggered release.

Yeah, gotta say I was not looking for a review of the movie....especially such a negative one. My son has always loved airplanes (not as much into toy cars)...but always gravitated to toy airplanes. He was 2 when we saw the premiere of planes in Oshkosh at EAA. He was too young to understand any of the story, but fell in LOVE with the characters. Was simply asking if there would be any place we could see a character from the movie.
Anyway, he is more than excited to see fire and rescue tomorrow!

Sadly no place to meet them but you could ride back lot and see ear force one that they did make kind of like planes.

OP, here is a pic of the plane on the Studio Backlot Tour. It's passed quickly on the tour, but I'm sure your DS would enjoy seeing it, I know my DD will.

Sorry folks but the movie is garbage compared to what Disney can do and has done. It's as simple as that. Maybe I'm a Disney snob but that's only because I know what Disney is capable of doing. Some of you and your kids liked it, good for you. We happened to not like it and I posted those critics to show that I wasnt the only one and that it was a common feeling. That's not being sour. That's just sharing my opinion then posting items to back it up. You dont like it? Dont read it. Simple as that :thumbsup2

Not sure how any of this is on topic...:confused3

Ummmm OP posted a question specifically regarding Planes having a presence at the theme parks, you know the purpose of this forum, because their kid really likes it. Asked nothing about the quality of the film. You then go off on a lengthy thrashing of the film, not at all relevant to the thread. Yet everyone else has the problem :thumbsup2

Do you stand at the mall in December screaming "He's not real" to kids going to meet the jolly fat man?

No one asked what your opinion on the movie was. OP wanted to know about Planes merchandise in the parks, not hear your personal views on how awful the movie was compared to other Disney movies.

Really was hoping Disney would add stuff with the sequel but seems they have not. Just having a meet/great Dusty like they have for the premieres would be a hit for our kids.

We have 2 kids who love the Planes movies (and Cars movies, more 1 than 2). Planes F&R was the first movie in theaters for our 2 oldest kids and a big hit.
Personally, I enjoy Planes 1&2 better than Cars 2 and maybe even Cars 1. Happy to watch any of them though.

There is, sadly, a large cynicism in the professional reviewer and adult reviewing public, in part because of the idea that the movie was originally a direct to DVD. I also see a lot of "complaints" from reviewers that the pixel count is low, subpar animation, etc. Guess what? Haven't met a kid under 10 who talks or compares pixel and frame rates. Pretty silly to me. It's a kids movie and a good one. It entertained the parents well enough too. Not every animated movie needs to target adults too. Disney has kid themed attractions as well as adult targeted. Makes sense to think they might add something from the movie.
