So with all the crazy things going on in the world. How safe are the parks?

I guess anything is a target but I would think populated areas

lol, I get it now, you mean like Disney Parks, I thought you were like talking national parks . Yep I think Disney and Vegas are big targets

As safe as anywhere else, if not a bit safer. There are bag checks and metal detectors...there was significant increased security last year after the Orlando night club incident.

DS was in London 2 summers ago at the London Bridge and the Market. Crazy times, but we can't hide under a rock.

DH spent 25 years as a federal law enforcement officer. We were at AK this week, observing the security measures - his area of expertise.

DD and her boyfriend had to have their bags checked. DH and I were bagless, so we walked right in.

As we stood there observing, we watched women with cross-body bags enter through the bagless entrance. They were not stopped and their bags were not checked. They very confidently strolled right into the park.

When we were in Disney this time last year, DH was stopped every. single.time. I don't know what it was about him, but they loved to run him through the metal detector. The other 5 of us were not stopped. Kind of became comical.

We just got back from a trip from DL. They have bag checks which were thorough (every zippered section they went through) and metal detectors. Unfortunately, people are still having to que up to get to security, which is in it's own way a place of vulnerability. I really tried hard not to think about the danger. With all the people that come and go from the parks, it really is impressive that Disney security was able to alert the FBI that the Orlando shooter had scoped out the area. There must be a lot of hidden security.

My big worry is about ride safety. Personally I think the biggest risk isn't some intentionally violent act, but something that wasn't accounted for, or perhaps personal negligence. It would be too easy for a child to do something like undo a simple restraint and fall out. I know someone who was a medical resident at UC Irvine when they brought in the kid who lost her foot at BTMRR. He pointed out to me what modifications were done to the ride (and presumably to other versions).

If someone wanted to attack at WDW, just outside the gates prior to rope drop would be the most likely. Once you're inside, you're pretty darn safe.

I mostly agree with this except possibly as an "inside" (person/people) who work there.

I believe there is a danger, the parks are a target both for crowds and what they represents (very American culture) I also believe that Disney is aware of that and is doing everything they can.

So I am aware of people around me particularly in high crowd areas like watching Fireworks. But I am not stressed about it, I haven't considered not going because of it and there is a little of "when my time is up it's up"

Disney is the one place I feel I can let my guard down, a little. I've watched the security people and they have gotten very thorough in their bag checks. I've seen people try to go through the bagless line, but they were stopped. I also noticed, on my last trip in March, a young man who was bagless, but his cargo shorts were full of 'stuff'...the pants were actually drooping!!! He was made to go through the 'xray' scanner, after emptying every pocket...man, he was peeved!!
Once inside the parks, there are cameras everywhere, watching and yes, probably 'profiling' people. There are plain clothes security people...I always wonder if it's the tubby guy in the sandals with black socks and the white belt on his madras shorts!!
I suppose that if someone really wanted to get in, with some kind of chemical agent, it might be possible. But, there's only so much I can worry about. I try to be aware of my surroundings. And I always know how I'm going to get out of a place in the event of an emergency!!! Yes, I am that worrier mom!!!

Yes, this. They've created points where people gather with the security check points, which is what has been the target in several attacks.

This sounds about right. If I were a bad guy I'd be a bit concerned that I'm surrounded by thousands of people with cameras!

The bad guys everyone is thinking of here WANT to be caught on camera, so frankly it wouldn't be a deterrent for them, rather an attraction. They have no plans of leaving the scene of the attack alive. I'll just keep my mouth shut from there, 'cause I'll get banned.

Anyhow, how safe is WDW? No different than any other very large gathering place...which is to say it's probably fairly high on a potential target list for these low-lives. But at the end of the day, I'm not going to live my life hiding in the basement.
