First of all, let me apologuize to the mods - I know that this is in the wrong forum, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where it should go. Please move it accordingly and accept my apology! :confused3

I'm looking for feedback from those who have joined the Disney movie club. It looks like a great deal, but I'd like to know your experiences.

We have an extensive VHS collection of Disney movies, but these are of course now obsolete, so I need to reaquire them on DVD. That "$1 for the first four movies" seems too good to be true.

The literature mentions that you have to buy x movies over the membership period at regular prices. Can anyone tell me how the regular prices compare to what I'd pay in a regular store? I'd hate to be stuck with a commitment to buy four more DVDs at $25 each or some similar inflated rate.

Also, what are your experiences with the availability of newer releases? I see that they have Bolt, which is good... do they typically get the new releases within a decent timeframe?

Is there anything else that I should know? Will I be bombarded with junk that I don't want?

Bottom line, is the movie club as good a program as Disney would like for me to think that it is?

Thanks for your help, Disers.

I didn't care for it...I get my disney movies from Walmart for a max of $19.The movie club is sometimes up to 23.99 and then s&h on top of it. I am trying to remember here because it has been awhile...But If you didn't decline the feature of the month in time they shipped it and you had to pay.Which for me was a major PIA because I would forget.I got bombarded with stuff too.Lots of junk mail for other Disney clubs( like the kids book one which also costed me more than it was worth).Read all the fine print carefully, the $1 for the first few titles was enticing, but in the end it was easier to opt out and buy from target or walmart.

We have been members with the Disney Movie Club for about 2 years now. Yes I agree that the $1.99 DVDS at the beginning is awesome. The club requires you to buy 5 regular priced DVDS before you become a VIP. Most movies have a price of $21.95 and those will count toward your 5 regular priced DVDs. Every time a new film comes out they will have it available within a month and when it does come out you will get a packet in the mail asking if you want to purchase it.
Once you buy your 5 DVDs at regular price you will become a VIP. They have given us some nice deals being a VIP. They will offer you buy one DVD at regular price and get the rest 60% off (sometimes it is only 40% or 50%) and you will also be able to get a free pin when you buy a DVD.
We have not been bombarded with junk. We get something in the mail about once a month, and then if you order online you will get confirmation emails.

honestly, i'm in it right now and am not super happy with it. the beginning offer is great, i cant remember but its like u get 5 or 6 movies for practically nothing. Then you have to buy i believe its like 4 regular priced movies within a years time. Well, #1 i have yet to find any regular priced movies other than their feature title. Every time i receive the mailing all the movies are discounted and i'm pretty sure they wont count towards your "4" movies. Secondly, if you dont remember to send in the card saying you want to decline the feature title then your credit card will be charge and u will get that movie. I just sent mine back in but forgot a stamp :headache: so now i'm the owner of Bedtime stories, lol. Also, i was once charge for 6 additional movies that i NEVER ordered, after hours trying to find a number to actually speak with a person, the issue was resolved but they attributed it to the fact that someone prob couldn't read the written account number on the order (which makes me a little worried that it may happen again). :confused3

The regular price on the monthly selection is $21.95 plus $3.95 S&H, so you end up paying $25.90. And it's very easy to forget to respond, so you end up with a movie you possibly don't want at a price that is higher than you could get elsewhere. You can send it back and Disney will credit your account, but you'll have to pay a couple of bucks to mail it back. The new movies are available as soon as they are released, but you can't get them any earlier than you could at Target or Amazon.com. Sometimes they have some pretty good deals. They don't bombard you with a lot of junk snail or emails. You get a monthly email and an occasional email with specials. And you get a big packet in the regular mail each month. Sometimes it has some cute stickers or tatoos for the kids. If you're a person who is not dilligent about responding to the monthly selection, I wouldn't recommend it. I've been a member for several years, but meant to cancel after fulfilling my agreeement and just didn't get around to it. But this week, I received my third unwanted monthly selection and I finally got around to calling and canceling my membership yesterday.

The prices generally show as discounted to show what you COULD get them for, IF you take advantage of the current special.

So if the special is "buy one, get the next 3 half off", it will show EVERYTHING with its half off price.

If you're ordering online, you can have the special offer taken OFF your order, by clicking...somewhere...we're VIP now so I don't see the normal things, and I don't need to take the "half off" stuff off since we met the membership...but it's there, I've tried it before! So in that way, you can order a movie at normal price.

Do you have your online account set up? I do get the snail mail things, but I also get emails. And I check in online often. Despite all that I messed up and own Bolt and Space Buddies, LOL. Kinda their fault, as they tossed 3 featured items at me inside of something like only 2 months, and I missed the middle one...but mainly MY fault. I kept the emails, I just got the timing wrong.

OP! If you have a list of movies that you want, and if you can order them all quickly, in as few shipments as possible (lower the shipping costs), only you can do the math to see if the first cheap movie offer plus the rest of the full priced movies (which means over 19.95 I believe) adds up to a better TOTAL cost than you'd get from Costco or deepdiscount or wherever.

We took a long time fulfilling our agreement, and the farther out we got from the cheapie movies, the harder it got to make that math work. The math was always there, working in favor of us, but by taking a long time and paying more shipping costs than I should have (by ordering one at a time), I hurt myself mentally. so if I were to order again, I'd do it as FAST as possible, getting myself to VIP as fast as possible.

If anyone needs to contact them, log in, go to Help/FAQ, and look around or just "control F" and put in 800, and I was taken right to the spot where their phone number, and a link to a form to email them, is.

We actually liked the movie club. Yes the 4 or 5 you have to purchase at "regular club pprice" do end up being $25 or so. But if you add up the ones you get super cheap at the beginning + the ones you buy and divide it by the # of movies...for us it ended up being less than buying the 9 or 10 movies from Target (or where ever).

I just canceled our VIP membership last week. They don't make it easy to cancel either! You have to hunt for the number & then none of the prompts say anything about canceling. It was a PITA.

It wasn't worth it to me because I kept forgetting to decline the monthly selections. I ended up with 4 movies that way & 2 of them were AFTER I fulfilled my commitment.

If you are organized & can remember to actually open & reply to the monthly mailer then I think it's a decent club. That is not me though! :rotfl:

I thought the club was OK and if you average out the cost of all the movies you have to buy, it is cheaper then buying in stores.

I also forgot to decline my featured selection a bunch of times but you do not have to pay for return shipping. Do not open the package, write return to sender on the front, drop it in the mail and it will be returned to Disney Movie Club at no cost.

Thanks so much for all of the responses so far!

Can anyone explain to me the point of being a VIP, and how one becomes one? Are you held to another list of "msut buys" or somesuch?

thanks!

It is what it is. The better the incentive, the better you'll feel about buying DVD's for $21.95.

VIP status is reached when you fufill your beginning agreement. I have been a member for years. If you only buy when there is a good deal, ie: 60% off it's worth it. I am patiently waiting for Lion King to be re-released.

I very much appreciate the info. Basically, VIP status gets you extra savings, but that's about it?

Since you're a pin trading addict, you might also be interested in the Club's VIP Pin Store. You can select a free pin when you buy a movie at the regular price, or you can buy just the pin for a small fee (normally $4.95 or $5.95). The selection's pretty small at the moment--they're only offering 3 pins-- but I think the current Donald Duck 75th Anniversary Pin is pretty cool. :)

oooOOoooooo!!! Yeah, that little appeal to my vice might be the last hook they need to get me. :lmao:

I have an email offer for the first four DVDs for the total of $1, no shipping. I have yet to see a better offer - does anyone know of one?

Thanks again for all of the input!

If you have the $1 movie deal with free shipping and only buy what you have to then it's worth it. Makes it about $11 per dvd. I did the buy 4, plus one more at 14.95 and it counts if they offer you that too. The club prices, plus shipping are not cheap. When I joined over a year ago you could actually find stuff for $19.95 (the minimum price it has to be to count towards the commitment) now it's hard to. Everything is $21.95 or higher, pus shipping.

With stores doing gift card deals, $14 at walmart and sometimes even coupons it's no longer worth it once you do the inital set. I get discount offers all the time, sometimes buy one at full prce, get all others 50% so that's ok I guess.

The website is having huge technical issues though so I don't know if you want to join right now. I've gotten locked out o fmy account multiple times and the pages freeze and now it says I don't exist. Took 3 MONTHS for tech support to finally fix it the first time. I was not happy at all. Now I'm locked out again. I much prefer using the website to cancel unwanted selections because I have email proof I cancelled. You don't get that on the phone. It also takes a few more minutes to go through the automated system vs. a quick click online.

I still have to buy one more to finish out the commitment but I'm waiting for the website to be fixed first!
