Ok folks, we are a few days away. Use this thread to post tips for runners, spectators, etc.

I have a very special friend that is running the marathon and hopes to qualify for Boston this year. I'll be tracking him on the marathon website the day of the race!!!

GO KURT!!!!

Don't forget it's divided into two days now. The 1/2 will be Saturday morning with one route and the full will be Sunday morning with the other.

Here are a couple of things that Disney mailed to the runners.

Please be aware that after 8:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, EPCOT® will be open for theme park guests and a parking fee of $9.00 will apply when entering the auto plaza (fee is subject to change). Also please note that due to the race course, the EPCOT® Toll Plaza will be closed on Sunday from 5:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

Available again for the 2006 Marathon Weekend, Live Results tracking is being offered to participants, friends and family to follow along where the runners are on the course.

We have many tips and etc on the WISH boards under events/competition...and we have a huge WISH team from the DIS boards going.
http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=109

My tips though:

Don't run with the flu---so not worth it (okay--just a smidge worth it--but felt like running dead last year!)

Hydrate this week (but don't over do it as you can put yourself at risk for hyponetremia (sp??)).

Runners can send result to friends cell phones and e-mail as they cross checkpoints. If you have a buddy running and want instanenous feedback on how they are doing--ask them to sign you up for that.

How does this work? I have a friend running in the half marathon. She lost 100 pounds in the course of 2 years. I'm excited for her and I would love to hear how she's doing.

By the way, I'm going to train for the Disneyland marathon in September. Hope I can do it!

She would need your cell phone number and service provider or e-mail address. Last year we could sign up at expo--but I believe she can do it on-line before going. I'll have to look into it as I am not at home to check my e-mail that had the sign up information in it.

How it works is--all athletes where a champion chip. The chip registers at the start and the finish and at certain points in between. As an athelete crosses the map--the chip and their time is recorded--and then it is sent to whomever was on her list to receive live results.

I'll be running the half!!!!!!! Well, not running, but not walking, more like jogging. I can't wait!!!!

I'll be a "bike medic" on both days.

If you see a paramedic careening out of control on his bike running into things, don't fear.

It's just me. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

This will be DH's 5th WDW full. Don't even try to get around via car before 10:00am either day. We tried staying at a non-monorail resort twice, and decided never again. This year we'll be at the GF again. I like to see DH just before the half just down the road in front of the GF on the opposite side of the PR, There's seldom more than a handful of people there, and there's a long straight stretch so I can see him coming. He can hand off things like his hat and gloves to me by that time if it was a cold start. He uses old sweatshirts and cheap sweatpants from Wal-Mart at the start and tosses them when he doesn't need them anymore, but has "special hat and gloves that are too expensive to toss.

Here's his tip--if you are an energy gel user, have two before the race starts, and bring two with you, because you won't get gel again until about mm 16. They do have bannanas earlier, but you need carbs before that point. If you wait until mm 16, they won't kick in before you hit the wall.

Anne

Ducklite,

Thanks for the gel tip. DH is a gel user. I will pass this on.

I usually catch up with him at the 1/2 point in a marathon. This is his first at WDW though.
So, the GF area is the half way point? I am nervous about where I can meet up with him. If it could be where you say, it sure sounds easiest for me.

We aren't staying on the monorail loop. We'll be at the Swan. I'm hoping that is a good place to be too. I KNOW it will be AFTER the marathon as nothing is better than a Heavenly Bed!!!! (marathon or not!! LOL)

If I do the GF area for the half way point, what is your recommendation on how to get from the Swan to there? We'll be relying on WDW transportation.
TIA!

We are staying at the Swan also!

I am going to drive our car to the Epcot parking lot for 7am (gates open at 7:15). Then I will monorail over to GF and watch for DH there - where Anne mentioned.

I have always driven our car to Epcot first thing and then used Disney transportation to view DH during the race (this is his 5th Disney Marathon also). This way our car is at the finish and he doesn't have to take Disney buses to go back to the room. I know that doesn't help you though. I would think your easiest route would be to bus to the MK, then monorail to GF from there.

I'm a dedicated runner, love *my time* alone doing 6-10 miles thru the community several times a week, and this thread is inspiring! One of these days i hope to be there with you!

In the meantime, wishing you all the best of luck and ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!!

Kristi,

Sorry to ask what are probably stupid questions!
Does your DH walk from the Swan to the start? What kind of transportation is offered for the runners to get to the start from the Swan?

So, you'll go to the GF and then to where? I may have to follow you around to find DH :teeth: J/K
I was thinking I should go from GF to Epcot for the end but DH wonders why I wouldn;t go to MGM from GF to see hima again. :confused3
Thanks for your help.

I have no tips/advice here. Just wanted to wish everyone thats running good luck! I'll be cheering for you from home!

Do any of you know people that run in the marathon but really shouldn't bother?
I know a few friends that are running in the marathon 1/2 this coming Saturday, but to look at them one would wonder why they bother. They complain even just walking or doing every day living, next thing you know, they are signing up to run the marathon!
Disney goes around asking people to get off the course if you havent reached a certain mile marker by a certain time. You must keep at least a 16 minute mile pace.

They have buses from all the Disney resorts to the start of the race. If I remember correctly, buses start running at 3:30am. :earseek:

My plan (as of now) is:
1. Park at Epcot, monorail over to GF/MK.

2. Bus (or cab) to AK

3. Bus (or cab) to MGM

4. Bus to the finish line to meet DH - he will most likely finish before I get there

There is bus transportation from the race finish back to all resorts.

I would have offered to have you come with me (really, I would have, I am not just saying that!) but I have a 2 year old and you NEVER know what can happen with him to delay me in the early morning!

I also never go to the finish line anymore. I have tried in the past and have never been able to see DH there. WAY too many people! I think the only way to see your 'person' at the finish, would be to skip seeing them anywhere else, go directly to the finish and sit for hours - hurry up & wait! I would rather see DH in 3 different places throughout the race to cheer him on.

One other thing that's handy - do you each have cell phones? DH & I call each other often during the race. That way I know exactly where he is and can adjust my viewing plan accordingly, if needed. The Disney Marathon also has the ability to have a racer set up text messages to be automatically sent to someone at certain points during the race.

PM me if you have any other questions! I am going to check out the map this morning to make sure my plan looks good. I also have to come up with a plan for the Half on Saturday - DH & my Mom are doing that one. :cheer2:

Kristi
