Disney made her believe a little bit longer.

With all the negative posts about FP+ and the death of magic, I wanted to post something positive.

We surprised our DD6 with a trip to WDW for her birthday. The trip was two weeks before her birthday during mid-winter break from school. She came home from school on a Thursday afternoon and found DH and me home from work. DH asked her if she would like to go to Disney and she said sure but didn’t think we were serious. DH brought her out to the car to show her the luggage was packed….she starting jumping up and down, yelling “Are you serious? Are you serious?” We told her we were going for her birthday and were planning to celebrate all week.

DD6 hasn’t believed in the costumed characters for about a year now….she knows they are people dressed up. She does still believe the face characters are real. She still has fun meeting the characters and I have told her that when we are in Disney, they are all real because it is just fun to pretend that they are.

Anyway, one of our MK days, we had scheduled our third FP+ for the Mickey Meet n Greet for after lunch, on our way out of the park. DD was wearing her birthday button. I knew that sometimes the talking Mickey is in one of the rooms at the meet n greet and DH and I were secretly hoping we would make it into that room.

There was a really long line but we bypassed it with the FP+ and they took us directly into a room where Mickey, the talking Mickey, was just saying his goodbyes to another family. DD was all smiles and in aw that Mickey was actually talking to her and greeted her warmly. He actually sang happy birthday to her and joked around that at 7, she would be ready to drive a car soon. I was all teary eyed to see her meet the talking Mickey.

The best part, as we are leaving the room, after warm hugs and good byes, DD turns to us and says, “That is the real Mickey Mouse….because he blinks and talks.” pixiedust:

That was the highlight of our trip but there were other small magical moments too, you just have to watch and take notice of them.

Wonderful! Thank you for taking the time to share that :) It warms my heart.

OP that is a wonderful story and thank you for sharing. You are obviously raising a respectful and appreciative little girl :)

I'm not a psychic, but I don't think this will be the last time your daughter will be excited to meet the characters. I first went to Disney when I was 8 years old, and though it knew the characters were people in costume, it didn't make it any less real-I was still starstruck to see Mickey in the flesh (from 10 feet away, didn't get to meet him but thats another story). Fast forward to last spring at DHS, when I was a 30 year old who literally threw my purse at DFi and said "Hold this! I gotta go get a picture with Minnie!". Well now..as Characterpalooza developed around me you can imagine I was in my glee. Five minutes later, Dfi says "Honey, quick I wanna get my picture with Stitch!"

Anyway, not trying to detract from your story, just saying don't worry, just because she eventually won't believe that the characters are 100% "real" doesn't mean that she won't believe in the MAGIC of the characters for decades to come :)

Great story!

Do our kids have to grow up? Definately a big part of why Disney World is still so special for us right now; we aren't in teenage drama years yet. ;)

Omg I would cry!! My son is 3 and obviously believes in all of the magic that Disney has to offer but I am dreading the day when he no longer believes.
We saw the talking mickey in december and he had a blast playing "Mickey says" with him. We were in in the room alone so I know he felt extra special.

What What a great story and magical time for your daughter!!!

Love this story! :lovestruc I would have been bawling!

Sounds like you are raising a little Disney girl. I am so glad I am! My DD is 13 now. She is a delight, but definitely has her teenage drama/smart aleck moments. I tell ya, when we go to Disney she is that little 6 year old again, loving it with all her heart. I know we will share that forever!

Ah, the 2nd thread in a row I've read reminding me why I love Disney so much. Thanks, OP!!

This is what I'm hoping for or at least that she gets excited to see them afar as she gets older. She doesn't have to want to get signatures and pictures but at least if she would get excited to see them and stop and watch them interact with other guests. She did meet other characters and you wouldn't know that she didn't believe....she played right along with it even though she knows.:lovestruc

...agreed, not detracting from this wonderful story, but WDW is still just as magical IMO even when they don't believe.

Our kids have never believed (even our youngest who was 3 on our first trip), but they still love interacting and meeting the characters. It's all part of the great experience, and memory making, that happens at WDW.

It was a tough day for me when she said she knew the characters weren't real. I just told her that when we are at Disney, they are real and it is fun to pretend they are real. She still gets excited to see them but I don't think she is as aw struck as she used to be until talking Mickey.

We're adults in our 40s, and still love taking pictures with the characters. Those pics make some of the best trip souvenirs.

Besides, if you can't be a kid again in the parks, what's the point of going?

So sweet! Thanks for sharing your parent moment with those us with grown-up children! :wizard:
