My friends DH grew up in CA. and has only been to Disney LAND. We are trying to convence him that Disney World is worth the try and money to go too.
Anyone have any suggestions as to why Disney World is better or worth the try?

TIA!!

Epcot, AK and MGM along with the water parks and DTD (which is different than CA.) If you're talking just about the Magic Kingdom, many of the rides are different (like Space Mtn, Pirates, Snow White etc) even though they may have the same name in CA. Also Toontown is quite different. We were at DL for Easter and at WDW in February. Both are GREAT! I enjoy both places and didn't feel like I was doing the same exact thing at DL even though we had just been to WDW. WDW is also different because it's a whole complex not just in the middle of the city like DL. I also like the boat/tram to the MK--makes it seem like more of a special destination than just pulling up in the parking lot. If he likes Disney, he should definitely go!

I live pretty close to DL and go often. I also usually try to hit WDW once a year or so.
If he is a Disney fan then it should be pretty easy to convince him by telling him that WDW is much more isolated and immersive in the Disney experience. If he is not a huge fan, you can tell him that WDW is much more adult friendly (drinking in 3/4 of the parks, Pleasure Island, etc). The example I always use to tell people why I go to both is that I use DL for short breaks from daily life, and WDW is a major vacation...a totally different experience. Alot of people here in CA who have never been to WDW think it is exactly the same as DL. They have no idea how much bigger it is.

Walt Disney World is bascially it's own city - they even have their own bus system. Anyway, Disney World is much bigger than Disney Land and has alot more things that can be done. At Walt Disney World you have a choice of four themeparks: Magic Kingdom, Disney Stuidos, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom; two waterparks: Blizzard Beach, Tycoon Lagoon; and a wonderful downtown area which includes shops, resturants, and attractions.

It's been hard to convert some of my DL-obsessed friends, but I've done it! :) Usually, I do it by describing Epcot, but it's the Resorts that put them over the top. Let them know about all the different experiences they can have at those beautiful resorts! That'll push 'em over the fence. Oh and the DINING options. Mmmmmmmm! California doesn't have enough room for all those resorts.

If money is one of his issues, you can stay on-site a LOT cheaper at WDW than you can at DL. DL only has 3 hotels, and they're all pretty much "deluxe" (or at least deluxe prices), but you can get a value or even a moderate for much less at WDW. This is actually how we ended booking at WDW for later this month--we were originally looking at DL, but it was about half the price to stay at a mod at WDW. And while we were planning for something around Christmas, when free dining came along, we were sold.

Disney World is better because it's only a 5 hour drive from our house and if we leave at 2:00 am ...we can be there for Breakfast.

Ok...I haven't been to DisneyLand, but, I am sure that the Magic is the same no matter where you are! :wizard:

The thing is the Size of Disney World and the more varried attactions. Two Water Parks...Downtown Disney and Animal Kingdom are some very good reasons to come to WDW.

You also have access to Tampa and Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach in Florida. All are within 60 miles of WDW.

I hear there are some other theme parks in the Orlando area also, but, I am not that familiar with them and don't plan on finding out more about them.

People at DL (who have never been to WDW) can't fathom the size of WDW and how much more massive it is than DL.

Size-wise, DL is the same as any other park (obviously not in quality). However, WDW, is on Disney owned property the size of a small city. One thing they focused on at WDW that they were not able to at DL is magic, atmosphere, mood.

At WDW they purchased LOTS of land (more than you can really comprehend), and they basically worked their parks into it.

Explain that size. Tell them that when you enter the property, you are entering another world and leaving reality behind, and that's before you even get into the parks.

I'm a CA native who grew up going to Disneyland often.

One piece of advice: never try to tell a Californian that Disney World is "better" than Disneyland. ;)

I adore Disney World. I'm awed by the size of the castle every time I see it. I love having so many options to eat at, and hotels to stay in. We'll be on Splash Mountain two weeks from this moment, and I'm already too excited to sleep! However, Disneyland will always be the superior park in my heart because of the nostalgia factor -- AND, Disneyland is where Walt walked. To me, that is more special than any 100 resorts and restaurants combined!

What MickeyandDonald said. I'd never try to convince a DL fan that WDW is better. I'm not even sure it's better, and WDW is my first love/park  .
Just point out how its differences are worth seeing--as everyone has been suggesting.
BTW--have you ever been to DL? It is an amazing park, worth visiting as much as WDW is. I think both DL and WDW are worth seeing at least once--for any true Disney fan.
Good luck! :sunny:

I've been to both and love both. Each has their own personality. WDW will blow you away... strongly recommend you go!!!

Tell your friend that Disneyland is so small that it can fit into Magic Kingdom's parking lot.

It's apples and oranges; there's NO comparison.

BTW, the parking lot tidbit is a fact.

Alot of the rides that go by the same name are actually somewhat or a lot different at the two parks. I think this alone makes it worth checking out both! They really are two totally different experiences.

this is easy. WDW is 10 times better then DL. i grew going to and loving DL. DL has 2 parks and WDW has 6. WDW is a place to get a way from it all. "never never land" for adults. they will love it. worst case senerio have them look at WDW video at youtube.com. lots of get stuff to see. i hope this helps

I've never been to DL, but I can't imagine living without Disney-MGM Studios (it's my favorite park).

As far as the differences between DL and MK, I really couldn't speak, but just tell your friend to imagine the fun at DL...now multiply it for the additional parks. Then add on the water parks and DTD.

As others have said, it's a losing proposition to try and make the argument that WDW is better. That whole better/worse binary establishes an argument where a discussion could be, and then no one wins. That said, you could make a compelling case for visiting WDW. How about visiting WDW as a point of personal comparison? A lot of pp have made good points about the immersive experience of WDW, about its size, about the attractions and parks available at WDW.

I don't have much to add, except this. Perhaps because DL enjoyed Walt's close attention, it feels a bit more like Walt's personal vision and seems to reflect the modernist culture in which it was originally built. WDW reflects a collaborative vision, and seems to reflect the postmodernist culture in which it was originally built. So when I visit DL I feel it is "authored" by Walt, the individual. When I visit WDW, I feel it is inspired by Walt. The difference is subtle but, yes, it makes a difference. And I see them as complementary, not competing.

WDW was built in a "What Would Walt Do?" spirit. Walt died shortly after acquiring the land for WDW, a place with enough space to hold and experiment with his many ideas. He never got to see them come to fruition. Instead, those who believed in his vision and in his memory built Walt Disney World. For instance, Roy put off his retirement to realize Disney World and it is Roy who insisted on renaming the resort WALT Disney World, so that we would never forget the man behind the magic. At the same time, WDW is the resort that reveals the Disney in us all: Roy, the Imagineers, cast members, and guests. So what we see in WDW is not Walt's vision but his legacy, what others see and value in the Disney vision, what others contribute, and what we collectively embrace about it.
