I have never worried about this before - just lucky I guess, but I'm planning a trip for Oct - smack in the rough part of hurricane season. If something were brewing we would bring our dog...SO, do you have to have reservations for the disney kennels?

I feel like there is one near the TTC, but isn't there another at MGM? Any info appreciated.

Thanks! :dogdance:

There is one at each park, MK's being the one at TTC. There is also a smaller one at Fort Wilderness. Last time I brought my dog, they did not take reservations, it was on a first come, first serve basis. If its a really busy time of year, you might want to give yourself some extra time in case one or more of the kennels is full. Try to get the closest one to your resort if possible though because you are required to come walk your pet.

No reservations are required for the kennels. We have left our pets at the FW kennel on many occasions, the cm's there are great. Just make sure to bring proof of vaccinations, especially kennel cough. You need that to board them there.

Seems like I read that you don't need reservations, but you won't be turned away IF YOU HAVE your own crate - so bring one!

I have heard that you have to walk your own dog there though -- they won't do it -- they just board them. Is that true? A friend did this and he had to continually go back and walk the dog.

It's my understanding that you have to walk your dog three times a day - worth it compared to leaving him at home in a storm, but a bit inconvenient. Thanks for the info AprilLizbeth and Grumpy92, and the bump, deekaypee! I've never boarded my pup before - can someone tell me more about the kennel cough thing? Is it something we can get last minute, or is it more complicated, like a human hepatitis vaccine?

The kennel cough vaccination is something the vet will give the pet when they are boarded. They have to have this vaccination every time they are boarded.

Thanks to the OP and all the help in this thread! I've been wondering about boarding my pup too! :dog: I miss him too much when I go away. I'd like to come walk him three times a day, but I am afraid he'd be miserable in the kennel. :dogdance:

Ok, so do I or do I not have to get the vaccine before we leave home?

You probably have to get it from your vet before you go -- I've never heard of a kennel giving the vaccination. But they all require proof of the vaccination.

You get the kennel cough vac. before boarding your dog in the kennel. It is given by your vet. You'll need to do it a few weeks before boarding because any vaccine takes time to build up an immunity to the disease.
From the pet center website I found this:
Any vaccine takes days to weeks to stimulate the dog's protective immunity to the disease. Vaccinating a dog the day it is exposed to disease may not be protective. If you plan to board your dog, or protect it from exposure, remember to vaccinate a few weeks prior to potential exposure to allow full protective immunity to build up.

Hope this helps. :wave2:

I would not leave my dog at the Disney Kennels. Although they are certified and relatively spacious, they will not walk your dog-as people have noted, and there is no play/activity area. So basically, Your dog sits in a metal box for about 21hrs a day for as many days as you are out galavanting in the parks. I couldn't do it. Plus you still have to go through the hassle of commuting to and from the park/resort to the Kennel three times a day. Remember it can take up to 45 min ONE WAY to get from MK to many locations inthe world. Not how I want to spend my vacation. If you live in a Hurricane area there is probably a better kennel that will evacuate pets in the event of a Hurricane or leave him with a trusted friend. Its expensive to board them at the elaborate kennels, but do you really want to leave your pet in a cage for a week with no socialization, play and very little excersize?//
Oh- if you want to call and ask questions yourself hte WDW kennel # is 407-560-6229 HTH

Pottersmom, I agree that the Disney kennels are not the ideal solution here. Usually when we go out of town our dog stays home and we have friends who come over twice a day to take care of him. However, he is now eleven and having some health problems, and we are only taking a two day trip for the Food & Wine Festival. As you can imagine, after eleven years he is truly part of the family and you can understand that some people wouldn't mind giving up some park time to ensure their loved ones are given their medicine properly, and are at no risk of being left alone during a raging hurricane.

Thanks to everyone for giving the info needed to decide whether to evacuate to Disney with him or cancel the trip. There are three tropical waves out there - watch out!

Blue Angel, Last Christmas my DDs insisted that our little dog needed to come with us to Disney. Epcot had just stopped walking the dogs for a fee & I didn't think that we would be able to manage the walks 3 times per day. They recommended Bass Pet Hotel on Bass Road in Kissimee. We were very pleased with the care that she received there.
