Disney in the month of May?

We chose to go before Memorial Day weekend, which is on Monday, May 26th.
My guess would be that the parks will become more crowded the end of the week prior to the holiday weekend, and increase throughout the weekend.

April 30 - May 6, YC. Meeting up with my sister's family for the week. Just hoping for tolerable warm weather.

Our last trip was the end of August 2002, never again. Just way to hot/humid/crowded compared to most of our other trip's in October. But in Oct. 1999 (the 6-13th), we had 3 days in a row of 93+ degrees and humid. They said it was very unusual. You just never know!

My family and I have made reservations at the Holiday Inn family suites for May 17-23. But anyway I would absolutely love to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I wonder when or if they will come out with any discount codes for the AKL? And too, at the HIFS its got 2 bedrooms, free breakfast, and all kinds of different goodies, BUT it is off property and we WERE planning to leave the parks midday to rest. So I just wonder if the high price/ onsite lodge would be worth it. Any suggestions anyone? Im wide open.

We went in May of 2000 and 2002 - one time it was the 2nd to the 9th and the other time it was the 4th to the 11th.

In 2000 - you couldn't ask for better weather - mid to high 80's and not really humid at all.

In 2002 - the heat and humidity was unbearable (we're Californians and not used to humidity) It was mid to high 90's that week and found that we could only handle the parks til lunch time then we'd head back to the hotel for a swim break or to a water park. We were told by hotel personnel that the weather we were experiencing that week was not typical for them at that time of year.

And... we're heading back again this May!!!!!!!!!

beautybelle, if you have your own transportation, going back to HIFS for a midday rest is no problem whatsoever. The hotel is as close (and closer!) than most of the onsite hotels. You will have a blast!

We were there in May last year, and I thought the weather was extremely nice. Yes it was hot but not unbearably hot at all. It wasn't HUMID and terrible like it is at the end of the summer. Never had any rain to speak of and always bright sunny days. Crowds were there but not bad at all. I will say that the buses were a bit of a wait... having a car at our resort helped that problem immensely. (I'm sure I would be thinking it felt a lot hotter if we had had to wait all day for the bus a lot of our trip, though!) Use fastpasses in the parks, and take afternoon breaks at your hotel for swimming in the pool or napping in the A/C hotel room, and you'll have a great time! :)

Was there last May as well, and it was around 95 everyday. We survived just fine, and loved it because people seemed to poop out real early, the key for our family to survive it was:

1) Drank tons of water. Pestered my kids to drink all of the time. Brought ice in empty 20 oz gatorade bottles so it was cold.

2) Sunscreen on before we left hotel room, and brought plenty to re-apply

3) hats for everybody, and sunglasses, girls wore ponytails

4) Took lunch break in air conditioned counter service only

5) had 5 year old in stroller--saved him some extra misery

6) wore as little clothing as decently possible. Both girls and boys wore men's swim trunks(no undies), and we all wore tanks tops.

7) comfy sandals helped me out, and would have benefitted my family. Hate hot sweaty feet!

8) did not use the misting fans much, but had them

9) AQUA COOL NECK BANDS bought at Wal Mart before we left, Soaked in ice water at hotel and brought in plastic bag, then we put them on when we felt the need. I refreshed them throughout the day, but the were VITAL to keeping us cool. In sporting goods dept for under $3, re-usable.

Good Luck! I will go again in May!

I have got to tell this story.........from the very beginning.........so sit back. LOL
My son is born, 1997, and you know those BIG bottles ya get at the baby shower that are piggy banks? Ya well we started then with our spare change saving for a trip to WDW for him. In 2001 (with a little help from our saving acct.) we decided it was time to go, so here me, my hubby, my son, my hubbys brother, wife, and 2 kids flew to Disney. Day1: Epcot; My son is soooo sick and running a temp that we almost decide to fly back home immediatly. But not. Day2: MGM Studios; wonderful day. Day3:Animal kingdom; I was sick to the point of delirium, literally. Day4: Magic Kingdom; Over 100 degrees and so crowded that people was literally walking on your feet, we just left after riding only 3 rides, disgusted. Day5: Typhoon Lagoon; another good day, believe it or not. Day 6: Seaworld; nephew was sick and it rained, we left after one show. Oh and by the way, we went in August and the temps were over 100. So you're asking yourself why I even WANT to go back. Well my first trip to Myrtle Beach was pretty rough too but after that we had a wonderful time each trip. So Im kinda hoping that will be the case here too. That and were going in a different month. LOL We are very easy to get sick (colds and such) so I hope everyone is running on 100% when we go this time. Well I've unloaded long enough, see ya later. Oh by the way, Im open to encouragement from anybody. Bye.:Pinkbounc

beautyelle, We are the same way. We solved the problem, we stopped flying. We drive every time now. We have decided it is worth it. We were so tired of our vactions being ruined. It really worked. Good luck this trip.

Shelly,

Was the airplane ride why your family ended up sick? Because I said that I thought it was the recirculated air that probably made us sick, I wasnt sure.
We are flying again this time but it is a nonstop so maybe that will help and we'll only be in the air for an hour and half, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

How crazy is it over Memorial Day weekend. We are thinking of incorporating this weekend into our week long trip. Thanks

We went last 2 weeks 2001. Weather was great for us. It was hot and sunny every morning with a few storms in the afternoon. They were spectacular. We dont get storms like that at home so it was very exciting to see the lightening. We are used to rain here in Wales which is cold and wet so warm rain was not a problem. We are ging again this May and hope to have similar weather.

Just another thought. Magic Kingdom is the venue for a gay pride day. Its held in May and the crowds and queues were horrendous. We will avoid going that day again as we missed a lot due to the volume of people there.

Oh my god! What day is gay day on? I want to avoid that like the plague. I have a little boy and the last thing I want him to see is, well you know.

It begins June 5, but the main day is Saturday, June 7, 2003.

Have to say it really wasn't a huge problem. The main problem was the extra volume of people in the park, all wearing red shirts
DH often wears a Welsh red tshirt. luckily he didn't that day as he would have had to buy a different colour to wear!!
My daughter age 11 didn't see anything at all to be worried about, and other than the queues it wasn't a problem I didn't realise its in June this year so you will be OK
Have a great time

I AM SO EXCITED TO FIND THIS POST.
