My jar kind of dropped from seeing the prices. Of course it is way out of our budget, and having a huge house is not my style, the pictures and virtual tours are quite remarkable. This is for hard core Disney fans with cushy buns

I'm not familiar with that term. The only thing that I can imagine it means is "fat butts", but then it wouldn't make sense. Care to explain what you actually mean?

Some of the architecture looks really amazing but the last thing in the world I'd want is to live in the middle of tourism mecca. And I can't afford to buy a $2 million house that I'll only visit for a month and then will sit empty for the rest of the time.

So no Golden Oaks for me I guess.

I think Disney is trying to get rich retirees to settle there. That's all I can think. Who else would buy a house that size? Disney also provides five annual passes for three years with the purchase. Of course, that's just rounding error in this transaction, but it seems the intent is to have year-round residents.

The HOA prohibits rentals for periods shorter than 6 months. But wouldn't it be cool to be able to live there for half a year?

Well, I guess that's what DVC is for... I kind of find the houses to be reasonably priced for the size/location/quality. That means that HOA (or "club" as they call it - includes golf club, of course) is probably insane. And taxes would be another $20K a year. Hmm... that's a budget buster!

Ha! Was fantasizing with DH about living at Disney for a month if we ever hit the lottery jackpot. DH asked, "what about the cat?" Now we wouldn't have to try to sneak her in! I'm going to print this out and put it on the wall, it's perfect!

LOL!!!

OK, just for the kicks, how much one would have to win to afford this. $2M for the house, $50K a year for maintenance/taxes X 20 years = another $1M, so $3M total, and given the taxes on this win, I would say need to win at least $6M lump sum or $10M in "lottery money" (spread over 10-20 years). And that's just the house - no new cars, no dinners out, no upgraded lifestyle. That house is a big lottery ticket!

Oh I am sure my Buick Lucerne or Nissan Altima would look great in the garage, lol. I would feel pressured to buy a high dollar car just so the neighbors wouldn't point and laugh when I drove into the neighborhood

Interesting that they have a Portuguese translation, not Spanish but Portuguese. I'm thinking they are marketing the newly found wealthy in Brazil, not referencing the World Cup but the daily tonnage of raw materials and land sold to Asia.

I kind of agree. I know a few millionaires (we are talking $1-2M saved over 20 year corporate career), and they all drive OK cars, but nothing extra fancy. Hondas, Jeeps, Tahoes, Coopers, those kind of cars. They were bought new and kept for ~10 years. Well, except for one guy, he always drives some sort of clunkers But I can't see any of them plopping two million into something like that, even if it was a million for a smaller house. The maintenance fees on these houses is just too much for "regular" millionaires (but boy, I am in love the decor!) Nonetheless, a well washed 5 year old Camry is not going to turn heads there. You can just pretend it's the housekeeper, LOL!!!

These houses are for families, and these people are going to invite relatives over... and we all some kooky relatives, don't we?

$20k in taxes would be a bargain around here for homes like that. I have friends who pay $20k and it's an average McMansion, $500k-ish home.

A $1.6 million home in our town pays around $96k in taxes.

I can't even imagine that....

WOW, that's steep! I looked up some ~$1M homes in Celebration just to get a sense where real estate values are, and they seemed to have $10-$12K per year taxes. Thus, my guesstimate. Though, year, $20K might be on the lower end.

Wow, we're at almost $9k for a little 1700 sf rancher on 1/4 acre. Then again when we looked into moving to FL approx. 20 yrs ago, salaries were almost half of what they were up here so I guess it's all relative. Overall, a much lower COL in FL.
Still, if what I've heard about most FL parents sending their kids to private schools is true, at least I can feel like we're getting something worthwhile with 2 kids in school. And it's a tax write off, which private schooling wouldn't be.

Maybe some day we'll get down there for good....
(Of course, not in Golden Oaks!!)

I love the look of it but it wouldn't be for me. I'd rather stay in a nice resort for a few weeks but live in a much quieter, pretty place. I'm partial to mountains myself.
