Disney gift card transfers - YES!

That is a clever idea! I didn't think of that, I tossed all my empty ones. But the one that I transferred everything (worked flawlessly) to, will just go in the room safe when we get there, and then to the front desk to pay the bill.
That's how I plan to do it, too. I don't carry gift cards around the park with me. We charge everything to the room, and then use the gift cards to pay off those charges.

I did consolidate, but I am paranoid about putting to much on one card. We do the same thing, charge everything to the room and then use the gift cards in the room. However, I find that you occasionally find Kiosks in the park where the MBs don't work, and so I always want to carry a GC with a smaller amount of money with me. So i Kept some straight up $100 GC, and several I combined to $300 GC.

The idea of transferring a lost card is a clever one though!

I realize that this is an old post, but this sounds too good to be true. Does Disney charge a fee to transfer the balances among gift cards? Is there a limit to how many you can do in a day? I'd like to combine a bunch of $50 ones from Target to put a deposit on a cruise tomorrow. Thanks!

No fee, no limit. Just have to keep deleting and adding cards as you transfer the balances

FYI, I've found that Disney STORE GCs can't be combined, even to each other. And you can't, of course, add to a Disney RESORT GC from a Disney Store GC.

There's also a $1,000 limit on any one GC, which still beats carrying stacks of 50s. It also saves time at the front desk, where you're often at the mercy of an often clueless CM.

interesting...I did not know there was a difference. I hope I bought the right ones at Target....

If you bought them at Target, they're the WDW Resort GCs, which are good at the resort AND at Disney Stores. The Disney Store-only ones are, um, only good at Disney Stores (go figure), and cannot be combined, either with each other or with the Resort GCs.

I thought the room charges (Magic Band) automatically go to the credit card that is attached.
How are you able to pay off those charges with gift cards (which, by the way, I love that we're now able to combine)?

When you go to the Front Desk to pay via gift card, don't they say it's too late.....the charges went to the credit card?

They'll only charge your card if:

1. It's your checkout day (or actually, the early evening of the night before)
2. You're approaching your resort credit limit

To avoid this, just go to the front desk before your checkout day or before you reach your credit limit (whichever comes first) and tell them you'd like to apply your balance to GC(s). They'll happily do this. If you've combined multiple cards onto one, it'll make the process much quicker, as the CM will only have to apply one card to the balance. If by chance they've already charged your card, they'll be able to reverse the charge so you can use your GC(s).

Thank you so much for your answer. Going the day prior makes a lot of sense. I have combined multiple cards into one because of this Board and appreciated it very much. Just used only one gift card (all merged together) a few weeks ago for meals/gifts and it was so wonderful. The previous trip I was balancing 6 cards. Didn't realize I could use at Front Desk.

I was very happy to hear about the ability to merge the cards and I thank all (like yourself) who are willing to share what they have learned. Thanks again.

oooops....I screwed up above and somehow answered on your answer. So sorry. Still getting the hang of using Boards and replying quotes.

DVCjj, I fixed it - hope you don't mind. :) CarolMN

Ah, no problem. Enjoy the trip.

And one more bit of advice: don't lose your GC! :)

Never bought any while at WDW, so this might be a silly question but can I buy gift cards there? If so, would they be good anywhere on property?

Yes; just about every store has bunches of GCs for purchase near the cash registers.

Yes. (Well, anywhere that takes GC/CC parents, that is.)

Yes. Those are the only kind Target sells.
What I meant to ask was buying Disney gift cards at WDW. I was asking because of just hearing different types of Disney gift cards can't all be combined. So what I was asking is are the gift cards sold at WDW the same ones as the gift cards sold at target?

Same ones with cuter designs. Of course, not 5% if having used the Target Red Card at Target.

 When did that start? It's been awhile since I bought one there but they used to be good at the parks - and I think that was back when Disney didn't own the stores.
