How do they work? Where can they be purchased in and out of the world? What are the pros and cons of these things?

They work like cash at the Disney store and the theme parks. You can buy them at the Disney store.

If you have a trip planned to WDW, the Disney $$ are great. I have convinced my grandchildren that only Disney $$ can be spent by children. I have been giving them little jobs when they come to visit which I pay them with Disney $$. I also gave them the $$ for Easter, for a lost tooth etc.

There are lots of ways for them to earn the money. I have a list of tasks that are worth 25 or 50 cents and they get a sticker for the tasks and then I pay in $$ once they earn a $ worth of stickers. It has become a great game for them, making the trip scheduled in May something to work for.

Can Disney Dollars be purchased at the resorts or in the parks?? My mom wants to give DD Disney $ for her birthday trip to WDW, but both the Disney Stores within 2 hours of us have been closed. Will I be able to get them inside WDW or do I need to go to a Disney Store at the airport? (We're getting into Orlando fairly late, so I'd rather not have to drag through the airport.)

You can purchase these at the parks. This is what I copied from the allears.net site:

Disney Dollars are available from Walt Disney World Guest Services locations and the Disney Stores, but are also available by mail order. You must pay by check and you can order up to $100.00. Send your request to Ticket Services, PO Box 10140, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830 (Phone: 407-827-4050).

Good luck! We bought these last year at our Disney Store and the boys loved spending them. Plus it made it such a great thing that this money couldn't be spent elsewhere -- made it easier to save!

We love Disney dollars and when planning a trip to Disney encourage all friends and relatives to give them to kids for birthday and christmas gifts. On our last trip both my kids had over $100 of their own. When they asked us to buy something for them - we would tell them that once the money was gone that would be it. It worked great and they spent their money wisely. (by the way DH and I received them too and it was nice too!) I don't know if anyone else has said but you can get them at any Disney store.

I think the advantage to having Disney Dollars is that they can only be used in Disney. That makes it much easier for me to save for my trip. I purchase them at the Disney Store periodically until my trip. I also gave them to my son for occasions before our trips so he'd have his own money just for Disney too. Relatives also chipped in with DD instead of regular money. I always save 1 DD from each trip and put it in our photo album from that year too. I have an awesome 25 yr anniversary bill in there! Just makes it more special.

I agree with Tink03477. To me, the biggest advantage of Disney Dollars is that because they can only be spent in WDW, you're not tempted to stop for lunch at McDonald's or make that impulse purchase elsewhere. Disney Dollars really force you to save for WDW, and they are accepted pretty much everywhere on property.
