What are the advantages of these versus cash? Are they traceable/replaceable? Should I bother?

I buy them faithfully every week ($50). I also have grandparents give the kids disney dollars for birthdays, Christmas, Easter, etc. The advantage to me is that you're not tempted to go into it the way you would cash. Also I don't miss the $50 weekly the way I do the huge hunk of money that we use on vacation.

There is no advantage. I think it is fun for children to have their own spending money in disney dollars since it has different decorations on the different bills. Just a fun thing to do.

You do get a receipt when you buy them at the Disney Store, but I don't know if it's traceable at all.

We bought some for the girls to use on our trip. Really, I didn't see any advantage other than the girls thought they were special!

My Disney Store in Dallas still sells Disney Dollars. Maybe yours was out of them.

We like them because it is an easy way to save for vacation. You can't spend them anywhere else except Disney.

Ijust bought $50 worth last week at the Disney Store....all in one's. I am bribing my niece(4) to behave who I am taking to WDW in December for her first ever visit.

I still buy mine at the DS too! I always get the kids' Disney spending money in Disney Dollars. They know that its their money for the week. (We buy food and essentials, they buy ice cream, toys, etc.) It works very well for us. I always keep a few dollars of it in my wallet year round. It brings a smile to my face when I go to pay for something and see Mickey smiling up at me!

We used to get Disney $$ to give to the kids for "special work" they did prior to our Disney trips. That way we knew they wouldn't be able to spend the money on video games etc. It worked great while the kids were young.

They can be "collector's items" too. DD was using them on our latest trip and a CM told her not to use the Chicken Little one because they are not making them anymore. So we put it in a photo album with her pictures.

Can they be used on anything at all in the parks? How about at the WDW hotels? OR DTD??

I asked people to give DS Disney Dollars for Christmas so he couldn't go waste the money on other things. It worked well for us, but they ARE NOT able to be traced if they are lost or stolen. They are just like cash. My cousin sent us $50 in Disney Dollars and we never received them. Unfortunately she told the employee at the mail center what was in the envelope and we are pretty sure they stole them AFTER they talked her out of sending the envelope UPS overnight. I thought she had just forgotten to send them - it wasn't until AFTER our trip that I said something to her about it and we realized the envelope never arrived. I think if she would have just put them in a plain envelope and snail mailed them they would have been just fine!

I bought all of our Disney $ at the Disney Store in December, but the store has now closed. I haven't tried to buy them at any other Disney Store location in town so I'm not sure about that. As we get closer to October I will have to see if I can track them down at another mall.

So to answer your question, they are fun but not necessary. It is my understanding that they can be used anywhere in WDW. I have read conflicting info on whether or not you may cash them back for regular currency so you definitely want to spend them all during your trip.

I have heard if you have a reciept, you can get your cash back....

I used to buy them for DS to use as part of his allowance or for special reasons..... Now I buy them every month & put them away to save up for a second trip this year. I have a tendancy to "dip" into my cash stash & the DD keep me from doing that. They are going to be used for food/incidentals in August.

We give the kids Disney Dollars in place of cash, starting a few months out from our trip.
That is all they have for spending money. They buy less junk this way.
