We plan to come to Disney in January to celebrate our daughter's 5th birthday. She is allergic to peanuts, and I would like to know how best to proceed with our dining plans. Also, I would love to get her a special birthday cake - does anyone know if there is a way to get a "peanut safe" cake?

Thanks so much!

Nut allergies are very difficult for desserts and breads at Disney. If you call way ahead they should be able to do something. If you email Brenda.Bennett@disney.com she will send you a bunch of ingredient lists for different places and snacks. One specific thing that was mentioned to me by her previously was to avoid TuskerHouse in AK entirely because they have a chicken strip crusted in peanuts and fried so the possibility of cross contamination was there. The Passporter book for special needs also has some good allergy info including not eating any of the Asian foods at Disney because they are often cooked in peanut oil. Almost every other place was excellent. If places serve PBJ sandwiches they are prepacked uncrustables so you don't have to worry about cross contamination. Another one I avoid is Pecos Bill in MK because the only dessert is a PB mousse. At each restaurant the chefs will talk to you and even make a special clean batch of food at a buffet if needed. I also do avoid restaurants that serve many items with nuts which includes Kona in the Polynesian and Boma in the AKL. It's just too much to worry about when a good segment of the menu is nut oriented.

If you PM me your address I will send you the GUEST ALLERGY/DIETARY NEEDS REQUEST FORM to fill out and send back to disney. They do a great job with nut allergies from what I am told.

Just returned from our 2nd trip to Disney with our daughter who has both peanut and tree nut allergies.
They do a fantastic job. When you make your ADRs tell the CM about the allergy. They will give you the restaurant's direct number and tell you to call them a day or 2 before you will be dining there, I only do that if I have a special request since I check menus beforehand. When you arrive make sure to tell the CM when you check in.... it's noted on the reservation but not all places seem to notice. Your server will have a chef come out to talk to you about menu items and in the case of buffets they will walk you through the line to discuss each dish.
As someone already mentioned, stay away from Tusker House and do the same with 'Ohanas as they have the peanut dipping sauce and with all the kids there god only knows where that gets spread ( I won't even do breakfast there).
We do almost all TS meals as that's what we prefer and I don't stress about oils and such at the CS places.

We visited in April with my Grandson who has a peanut allergy. They were great about it. As others have said, the Chef will come out and discuss your needs and make suggestions for you. At CRT breakfast, they brought a special basket of breads, since some of the regular are made off property and they could not guarantee there was no cross contamination. The chef also prepared pancakes especially for him.
Disney does a great job with peanut allergies.

My daughter has a peanut allergy and believe me, Disney knows their way around this and all other allergies!!!! I just called for my ADR's and told them we have a person with a peanut allergy and on that trip we also had a strict vegetarian and a low-carber and they made wonderful meals around it...
We just told them about the allergy and never worried about it again and on each of our reservations they had it noted and asked my daughter not to order or go up to the buffet until the chef came out to talk to her. The chefs at each restaurant would come out and talk to her about each and every menu item and each dish on the buffet. Many times, they either suggested a certain dessert or offered one they "specially" prepared for her. Some desserts are bought and brought into the restaurants so they would say because there are other nuts in the dessert, they would recommend her not to order it because it MAY also contain peanuts. I don't think you'll have much of a problem at all if you're certain to let them know with your reservations..... AND each time I called to change a reservation or add a reservation, I made sure it was still noted.... Then there was nothing to worry about after that.

Also, stay away from the pirate cruises. They serve pb&j lunches to the children...

Does Tusker House still serve this peanut chicken strip you guys mention? I never heard of or saw this on the menu!?!?

It doesn't appear on the menu at all ears that has been recently updated. I know as of Jan 2006 they were still serving it. I believe it was on a skewer. I'd personally still be cautious about fried items though if they still use the same fryers.

I have a tree nut allergy and when I made my reservations they added that so it was known when I went to the restaurant and I shouldn't have any problems. I would think if you order a cake and state that, it shouldn't be a problem whatsoever!

we've had great success travelling to the world w/a peanut/tree nut allergy... we've been accomodated everywhere we've gone... although we did receive some misinformation at boma breakfast, so i would avoid that in the future...

as far as the cake goes... the main wdw bakery cannot promise safe baked goods, but the individual restaurants can... if you order far enough in advance, you should be able to have a cake (or other fancy dessert) made...

ITA with everyone on here. Our 9 year old son has peanut allergies.
WDW was so very accomodating to him. The chefs came out and spoke to him, made him feel special.
Good luck and don't worry. They are very good about allergies!

Thank You for the tip on O'hana's we have 2 kids allergic to Peanuts and my older one turned blue last week to a new food allergy to apples. Pedi is investigating that one though and thinks we didn't wash it well enough and it was a pesticide on the apple and not the apple itself, but still very scary. We did have a reservation there and you are correct even if it is not on our table there could be some left from prior people.

Just let Disney know ahead of time. My 14 year old is allergic to ALL nuts. You name it...he is allergic (was excessively tested as a small child...Yikes)

Last year at Disney we had the chef at I believe 3 restaurants come personally to our table regarding this matter. They were extremely careful about the topic and made my son some great dishes!!

best of luck,
Esmerelda
