Disney Dining Plan -- Artist Point Question

I know that it requires 2 table service credits. However, for the 4 of us (DH, DW, DS, DS), can our 11 YO and 5 YO sons share and eat some off of our plates? Or, can we order our 11 YO and 5 YO deserts so that each of them are paying customers? Do we have any other options?
 
There have been several reports of folks being prevented from sharing on the Dining Plan when there are children (3-9 years old) in the party. In those cases, families are at least required to use those children's Dining Plan credits for that meal.

This is currently Disney's only mechanism to keep guests from using child meal entitlements for adult meals, and so they apply it sometimes, even when it may or may not apply (such as if you planned to use the extra credits specifically for your child later, and pay for yourself out-of-pocket).
