Disney Day of Service

I WANTED to do the Project Linus fleece blankets, me and my daughter (age 17). I got this email (NJ) :

"Hi Patricia,
Thank you for your email and interest in supporting this charity. At this time we are welcoming blanketmakers; those who knit, crochet or quilt."

Huh? This leaves us out! I was all set to make some fleece beauties. I even said I could help deliver them, they asked for that as well. Not sure why they do not want fleece blankets. I was going to buy some cute fabric, really do them up nice.

I also signed up for office work in Trenton, waiting for details.

I posted this a few posts back, same response from the center near me.:confused3

Did anyone donig the Project Linus through the Nottingham NH site get info that says they have to make 2 per person? Or that you have to include a picture of the person working on it?:confused3 I have gotten 3 emails from them and it doesn't say that anywhere. We have already assembled our blankets ( 1 larger sized one per family member) We made them Sunday just before my 2 DD left for a trip before returning to college:confused:

We are going through the Nottingham Chapter. We are a family of three and we are doing 4 double fleece blankets. Three are 60X72 and one is 60X46. We are spending the weekend doing this. Perfect for such a frigid day.:goodvibes

We got the fleece on sale at Joann Fabrics. No mention of a picture and we plan to mail them to her. I would assume it is 1 blanket/ per person/ per Disney voucher, that would be fair.

We plan to donate blankets throughout the year as well. Will probably make a few more this Summer (single fleece) and again in the Fall.

What happens when the days are all full up and I can't get in to volunteer until April? Not a biggie cause my vacation isn't until summer, but I can't get it entered into the system until 60 days before it occurs. The girl at the place I usually pack out food boxes tried to get me in as soon as possible but said she had so many people willing to volunteer she couldn't keep up with it. I don't really care about when I do this, as I would have been doing it anyway, but I was surprised to get bumped from my usual day, not to be needed for months and then when I went to enter it, the site refused it since April is longer than 60 days away.

My girl scout troop spent their meeting Wednesday making the fleece blankets. They had planned to make the blankets and find a charity to donate them to when I saw this post. I was able to find a Project Linus in our area willing to take all 30 of the blankets we made AND the bonus is...I secretly emailed the parents and got everyone registered and turned in the blankets. The girls have NO IDEA that their good deed will go rewarded when I take them to Disneyland in March!

I love the budget board! My girls do so many community services without expecting anything back, it is awesome that I can do this one little thing for them this time!
Thank you OP!

We made three double fleece blankets. I bought the kits from Joann's, ending up spending about $75 because I got the express shipping. I will turn them in on Monday. I was not told that they had to be any certain type of blanket, just a blanket. I hope they like them because by guys wanted to keep them.

I am making dinner for 35 at a homeless shelter. Any ideas for a quick meal that can be cooked in an hour? The organization requested no pasta and there are those who don't eat beef or pork. I am thinking chicken with a salad or steamed green beans. I'm just trying to think of a "good" chicken dish. Any ideas?

My DH wants to be a photographer for a fund-raiser for one night and I'm either going to make packets for the same fundraiser or make ribbons for MADD.

We're both waiting to hear back from the group. We got an initial email stating that they will contact us next week.

Our trip is not until July, so we have time.

We're planning to go for the Fastpasses since we'll have AP and UGH, summers are just busy. Having two special FP for up to 6 people each will help out our party of 10!

Can we sign up for different events? I would like to do 2 of the local winter coat drive collections (each person needs to donate at least 4 coats and I have them all ready).

Then I would like the other 3 of us to do the book drive and donate 10 books each, I have most of those ready too.

This should work, shouldn't it? We don't all have to do the same thing??

Thanks,

Dawn

Just to clarify that my local group in NJ contacted me and will accept the fleece blankets now. They seem to want single layer ones, not sure why, I emailed them to make sure. I found a nice pattern for single layer, where you cut a small slit above the fringe and sort of pull it thru that slit to make it look finished.

But, we need to make 6 each. I will look for fabric tomorrow. Honestly, the fabric will cost about the cost of a pass perhaps, but I do not care. i WANT to make them. I hope to get some 1 1/2 yd prints for kids, some 2 yd ones for teens.

I think I will try several opportunities and maybe even find one that sticks with me to work with long term.

Yikes, 6 per person!
So much for my theory about not being able to accomodate a glut of fleece blankets all at once. Guess I was way off the mark... at least for the NJ chapter. :rotfl:

Besides the no-sew kits, JoAnn also has fleece yardage on sale. Approx $7 for blizzard prints, $9 for anti-pill. They even have some cute Disney patterns sale priced online, but all the licensed stuff was $15 a yard at my local store.

Yes, each person can choose something to match their interests/talents. It sounds like your plan should work.

We signed up for a local movie (community theater) thats run by volunteers. so the whole family 40-3 can participate!
we work next sunday but our trip is in Sept and Oct. Congrads to all that are able to participate.

Got my voucher! Did the service last week and got back my email voucher within the week! (This time frame may not be the norm....is up to organizer to get the time to verify volunteers )

I did mine with my son. Almost any activity that is family based u may be able to bring those under 6.... they will just not get a ticket but still have a great time joining the activity. Just drop them an email, u get a email address of the organizer once u register.

Ours was also scheduled from 9-3...but it only took 1 1/2 hours...it would have been less if there wasn't a back flow of people registering.

In most cases the activity is only for a couple of hours. The long time frame stated allows for all the people to come thru and complete project. I kinda figured that b4 hand bc there was no way they can expect a 6yr old to work for 6 hours.

Happy Volunteering!

Also if any one gets a chance....I am curious to see the "Collectible Ear Hat figurine with exclusive trading pins" as one of the options. Anyone choose that and got a pic I would appreciate it!

Jo-Ann Fabrics has coupons for 40% off a single item fairly regularly if you sign up for their mailing list. It works on non-sale items. We used it to get six yard of a beautiful blue fleece with Lightning McQueen on it... it was regularly $15 a yard, but came down to $9 per yard after coupon. Our Project Linus lady said they needed boy blankets (more people make girl ones).

wow, i can't even find one to sign up for ... everything feels up fast. I found that one i posted about before, but the director of the service didnt even know about it ( see prev. post)

We finished our blankets tonight. I e-mailed our contact and am waiting to make arrangements to drop them off. It really didn't take that long. DD (10) helped me tape the 4 inch borders and DD(13), DH, and myself used the rotary cutter to cut the fringe, and everyone tied their own blanket. (I cut DD 10 fringe.) We had a lot of fun doing this project together. :)

I signed up on 1/1/10 for The Red Cross Blood Drive, emails were quick with information get to volunteer on 1/12/10, will let you know how soon I get my email for ticket voucher.

Next Sunday DS7 and I will bring donation items to a foster care agency about 45 miles south of here. He always saves $1 a week to donate so he has $7 to contribute and we will go shopping once we get their "wish list." We already have some toys and some brand new stuff DD1 outgrew to put in the bags. I love this sort of thing! And this year we were too crazy at the holidays to "adopt" a few kids as we usually do so I am glad this is such a good fit. (He doesn't even know that I'm planning to bring him to Disney for a weekend for his 8th bday in early December)! ;)

I signed myself and my 2 children up to buy and fill Easter eggs for an Easter egg hunt done by the Salvation Army. At first in my email I said that could do 50-100 eggs but after looking online I found a company that I can get 500 eggs filled for only 34.00. I:cool1:'m waiting on a reply back from the director.

We did our service tonight. We went to City Team in Chester, PA and served dinner. It was GREAT!! We were there about 2 hours. I dished out food, and DH served trays to the people. It was a great experience, and I think we might go back and do it just to volunteer and help. There are truely some amazing people out there!!:thumbsup2
