I know the standing rule is that its not a good use of points to book cruises, but! looking at a Feb 2015 ....1300 cash...or @ 85 points...seems like a decent exchange?

The 85 points required is per person, not per cabin.

That being said, we always use our points to cruise. I'm not interested in trying to rent them out, we bought them to use! :)

Is that for any cruise? I'm still trying to decide if I should join the DVC.....

I'm not sure which one you're looking at but 13 Feb Cat 6A is $1283.52 compared to 86*2 (pretty sure it'll be 86 instead of 85) gives a return of $6.91 a point with the risks of additional $95 fee if you change anything and loss or restriction of the points if you have to cancel. Feb 20th cat 11C would be $1295.52 or $7.06 per point. These are pretty standard returns when using points for a cruise. Occasionally you can make the numbers look better when you miss the early booking discounts and you might find an exception here and there that really is much better.

We've broken that "rule" several times with no regrets. We use points for DH and me, pay cash for DS. Sometimes we just have more points than disposable cash for a cruise. They're your points, use them in a way that works best for you.

Personally I'd rather use our points instead of renting them. We've rented to an acquaintance a couple of times and it's kind of a hassle.

We have done 3 dcl cruises using dvc points. Didn't regret it for a second. I would have to have rented a lot of points for a very high fee to get back what last year's 8 night on the magic would have cost for 4 of us.

I always rent my points and pay cash for a cruise. I don't want to deal with handling rental agreements, etc. so I use David's service with with minimal effort. I rent the points out early enough so that by the time the final payment is due, I have the cash from the rental to pay it. I even keep it in a separate savings account so that it doesn't disappear in my checking account.
