Ok i am not to up to date on how this is gonna work. We need 2 rooms. there are 6 total in our family. We have enough points for all of us by 1 adult. Is it possible to book a room & pay cash for the Adult & use the points for 1 child? i would try to book all of the kids & me in one room but then i have to get a cat 4 room & that would be way to many points. So what should i do.

The primary adult person in each cabin must be paid on points. After that you can pay points or cash for each individual. Remember each cabin will be charged full price for the first two people, whether they are adults or children. I hope that makes sense.

Points cruises need to have at least the first adult in each room as all points, Additional passengers can be points or cash (you cannot split one person)
I believe that the first 2 passengers in a room are considered adults for price / points usage (so in a one room scenario you would have 2 adults and 4 children, and only the first adult must be points, but in a two room scenario you would be booking as 4 adults and 2 children and would have to use points for 2 adults)
I have not called MS to find their cash costs. When I once figured points usage of Cat4 vs (2) cat 10/11, there was not a huge jump. Although I've read there are a few adjoining cat 10 or 11's and on a cash only basis getting those adjoining rooms are slightly cheaper than a cat4, and adjoining gets you more privacy (2 rooms) and an additional bathroom, but no balcony..)

The above posters are correct...the first two passengers in any cabin pay the adult fare whether it is cruise or points. Therefore, you will need to pay 4 adult fares and 2 child fares for your party. It will still be cheaper to do this in a lower category than booking a category 4 and another stateroom. Plus, if you were going to book the 4 and another stateroom for one adult, that adult would pay 1 1/2 times the adult fare as a single supplement.

Once the first passenger in each stateroom is paid for with points the others in that room may be paid for with cash or points, as you choose. Each person must be paid for with all-cash or all-points.
