I know nothing about Disney Cruise Line. Please help me with the following questions.

I am taking my Mother for Mothers day, in 2004.
Would you recommend DCL, or would you recommend that I do a different cruise company. Do you Feel that DCL, only for families??

Which cruise would you recommend? Western or Eastern and Why?

WHat length, the 3 or 4 day cruise, seem to short, but if you disagree, please tell me why?

how should i pay for it? DVC Points? DVC POINTS and CASH?
CASH only?
I have no trouble using my DVC POINTS AT 4 dvc resorts in orlando,FL

THank you in advance!!

I LOVE DCL, it is elegant and have such a sence of class and timelessness that other lines do not have..it certainly is not just for "families" but then you are speaking of taking your mom and is that not a family?

I prefer the seven day cruises as they are the most relaxing, we have done both the eastern and western but I prefer the eastern because of the extra day at sea, I do think the 3-4 day are too quick but they are a good tester to see if you like cruising, amazingly some people ACTUALLY do not like it.. not us.. :)

I have no trouble using my DVC POINTS AT 4 dvc resorts in orlando,FLsome people will advocate renting your points and paying cash, we have never bothered. We pay half cash and half points each year, the amount you spend will directly be related to the cat. you select and the time of year you cruise.

THank you in advance!!

In my opinion, Disney Cruise Line is not just for families with children. Disney goes out of their way to incorporate activities and entertainment that appeals to all age groups. From infants to grandparents!

Although Travis and I are huge Disney fans, we have no children. We have been on four DCL cruises, have three planned for next year, and would not even consider another line.

As far as the DVC point question, can't answer that as I'm not a member. Although I have heard people say that it is more worth-while to book and pay with cash versus DVC points. Not sure why, or even how that works, but that's been said a couple of times on the boards.

Hope you have a great vacation no matter what choices you make!!!

We will be booking with points if all goes well this week. Yes, I agree you could probably do better by renting your points, or paying a combo of points and cash but we specifically bought into DVC (buying enough points) to do the cruise every couple of years with no cash outlay. That is just our personal choice. I prefer not to have to deal with the stress of renting points. That however is just my opinion, I know there are some great renters and rentees out there.

We recently returned from the 4-day Wonder. At the table next to us was 2 sets of grandparents who were cruising together - without any of their kids or grandkids. They were having a fabulous time - this was their second cruise - and they couldn't say enough about how much they were enjoying this cruise compared to their other cruising experience. I don't recall what cruise line their first cruise had been through.

I say - take your mom on DCL!

I don't think I could help you with the length of cruise question - the 4-day was fabulous!

I would say... what are you looking for in a cruise?

I am a big advocate of DCL, but if you want I can give you pro's and con's of some other cruise lines I have sailed. But sometimes it depends on what you are looking for too.

1st Cruise Line: Carnival (I have done 2 Fantasy Cruises)
I should start out by saying these were mainly spring break cruises while I was college, and I took them because a) what my friends were doing and b)it was the cheapest cruise on the market. Looking back there wasn't a whole lot to do on that ship besides drinking and gambling. I didn't think the ship was in very good shape, and the staterooms were very very very small. Also, I did not care for the food quality. Also looking back, I wasn't very impressed with the service either. I know I won't be sailing this cruise line again. I can't say I had a horrible time, I did have fun, but more because I was with my friends then what the cruise had to offer. But the one thing about Carnival is that it is very inexpensive. But still, for what you are looking for, I am not sure I would reccommend it. My experience on Carnival was a lot of drinking and partying. Might have been the time of year I went, both times in early Feb. Not sure though. I have heard similar comments from other people.

2nd Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line (I have done 1 4day Sov. of the Seas)

I have heard a lot of good things about RCCL, but mainly in the Voyager/Radiance/Vision Class of ships. Sov. is a older ship, shows her age. I wasn't very impressed with the food at all on RCCL. Also, wasn't too impressed with the entertainment. Again, Seemed a lot of times that the only thing to do was gamble. I am not a big gambler. But if you or your mother like to gamble, keep in mind DCL does not offer gambling. That is one reason I like DCL. Sov. of the Seas also had very small staterooms. She was a better ship and cruise overall then my Carnival experiences. But I won't be going back on her again. She only goes to the Bahamas.. blah, and my personal opinion is that if I am taking a quick 3 or 4 day cruise I want to be on a much classier ship... which is why I like the Wonder so much. The upkeep on DCL is amazing, everything always looks so new. I might consider trying a newer class of RCCL cruises, to see the larger ships and also a new itenerary.

Holland America (Took an cruise to Alaska a couple of years ago)

This was a very nice cruise. Ship was well-maintained, had decent-sized stateroom, and the food was good as well. I didn't think the entertainment was as good as DCL, but the cruise was very laid back and I thought the service was excellent. I took this cruise mainly to see Alaska and I must say, it was truely amazing and I would love to go back to Alaska some day, and wouldn't hesitate to go on HAL again.

Now a question some people might ask is, "Why would I take another cruise line, other then Disney?" Main reason I would personally, is to get a different itenerary, and see some new ports. I am dying to see Europe, especially Norway or Russia. Also, I would like to see South America.. maybe a Panama Canal cruise. Can't say I wouldn't love to go back to Alaska again, or see Hawaii via a cruise. As far as ship accomidations, some people say.. but the big ships have Rock Climbing walls, ice skating rinks, mini-golf.. well for me at least.. I don't rock climb, don't ice skate, and hate put put golf. So they don't really appeal to me all that much.

Now the question... "Why Disney Cruises?" Well I have lots of reasons.. I will give the top 10, since this is getting long :)

1)Classy old, oceanliner feel... there is something about the decor that appeals to me. DCL, not too big, not too small, just a classy, well kept ship that has a lot of attention to detail and a story and theme no one else can match. It's not Vegas, its not Pizazz.. it's Classy Disney WOW.

2) Castaway Cay... nothing beats it. Been to other private islands. Nothing, absolutely nothing compare.

3)Entertainment... nothing compares to DCL entertainment. Ask anyoune, you can't describe the way you feel the first time you see Disney Dreams. Its nothing but broadway style, quality entertainment each night.

4) Family Atmosphere. I'm not a drinker, not a gambler.. so I like the family oriented activities, also the themed activities Disney provides.

5)Split Bath and larger staterooms as a whole

6)Disney touch.. really does give it a magical memoriable experience

7)Themed Rotation Dining.. makes each meal unique and memoriable.

8) Fresh Water Pools

9)Great Service.. best in the industry in my limited experience

10)Best Embarkation/Disembarkation procedures in the industry.. hands down!

Sorry so long.. Hope that helps some!

I travel with my Mom (74) and son (8) - we find that DCL has enough for all of us to enjoy. We have cruised multiple times with DCL and enjoyed all of them!

Although we did have one favorite family evening entertainment, it was changed and we haven't found a replacement for it.

When DH and I cruise - we always have a great time! A vacation is what you make it!!

I do like the 7's better than the 3's and 4's (tried one each).

Hi Rae....

Ready to join our October 2nd cruise ??:sunny:

We miss you....::yes::

Hi to mom :hyper:

Hugs,

HI!
So good to hear from you - I "abused" the system by putting in a shameless little thread about "what I did post cruise" - you know me, it's horses! horses! horses! All the way!

Had a great time but unsure about what we will be doing next year - so far we are firm on April 17. Have you checked airline prices??? WHEW! Maybe we can "ride" there!!!!

So don't count me in or out of October yet!

Rae

Good Morning,

We are driving next trip...It is not only prices...but the hasssel at the airports.......Seems as tho people just get ruder by the trip...just not worth it anymore.....

If only I could "Magic" my parents to the ship from England, I would. Unfortunately, the journey is too much for them now. However, a 7 day cruise is just what the doctor ordered: but would suggest that the Eastern one is the best for many reasons. Yes, you get that extra day at sea, which is great, - but also the trips are far more scenic. Take them to island of St. John:best place on earth! Book now!!! Nat x

It's a really nice thing that you are doing and I have to say that it really depends on what you want from a cruise.

If it is just two if you then Disney may not be what you want. If you have other family members and children then maybe.

My own experience on Disney is that I wasn't that impressed and probaby would select another cruiseline over them. For me the food was plain and certainly not in the "fine dining" class. The entertainment couldn't be faulted but our kids were so disappointed after going to the kids club twice and not getting chance to play with anything that they didn't go again. There were 900 kids on board on the cruise we went on and if you don't want to be surrounded by kids I'd advise you to avoid Disney.

Also, if you value peace and quiet then Disney isn't the ship for you either. Yes, there are quiet spots but the pool areas are beyond a joke and IMO, dangerous. Far too many people in a small area.

So, Disney isn't my cup of tea but it maybe yours. Personally I much prefer Celebrity and Norwegian. The smaller Carnival ships are to be avoided if you don't enjoy the "party" atmosphere all day everyday but the newer ships like Glory are lovely. RCCL's Voyager class of ships are truly amazing and would be my first pick if this is your first cruise. Make sure you try the specalist dining areas....really good.

Celebrity is slightly classier than Carnival, RCCL and Disney and there are less people on their ships. The service is absolutely excellent.

Norwegian's new ships with freestyle dining are the way of the future IMO. Lots of dining choices and at a time when you want to eat. OK, so there may be a cover charge in some restuarants but they are well worth it.

As for Eastern or Western...it really matters not if you haven't been on a cruise before. If you have then I'd pick Western as I like Grand Cayman ! Some of the nicest cruises are the 10 and 11 nights which really do cover the Caribbean going to Barbados, Antigua and St. Lucia.
