Disney Cruise Line v. Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas comparison

One thing to think about regarding the beds is fir the price of one stateroom on DCL, you can usually get 2 connecting on RCCL, NCL and CCL. We have 2 teens so always get 2 rooms on the other cruise lines.
Yeah, I know, but it's really hard planning out far enough to get those darned connecting rooms!! I'm a planner, but 2019 is not on my radar, without knowing the school and dance recital calendars. 2018 we're going on an extended family cruise in the summer that's already booked. I was looking for stuff for Thanksgiving 2017 week for just my 4, and it's far too late to book connecting rooms for everything I've been pricing out (and my kids are elementary/middle school, so near-but-not-connecting isn't a good option yet). I don't have the school calendar beyond 2017-18, so I'm stuck. And I would LOVE to just take the kids out of school but the middle schooler would have a heart attack. Some days I wonder why the heck I stopped homeschooling! There just aren't enough connecting rooms, it seems, esp since people book those rooms but don't actually want the one connected to them.

Let's do Dining next, this will probably be long, hope you don't fall asleep :faint:

BREAKFAST and LUNCH

First of all let me say there are a LOT more options and places to eat on Royal Caribbean, especially on their newer bigger ships. Anthem is not an exception.
Disney Cruise Line has the "Cabanas" buffet and Royal Caribbean has the "Windjammer Marketplace"
Windjammer is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner all served buffet style. On embarkation day I had no intention of going there for lunch as I heard it was crazy, but DS wanted to and foolishly we gave in.
When you walk in, there is a hand washing station with soap and water.
Windjammer was a mad house to say the least. Ok yes I know Cabanas is busy too on embarkation but the Windjammer was really something else. I didn't really take pictures in there because it was hard to move around. We finally found a table and then went to get some food. Windjammer at least on Anthem has a different layout than Cabanas. There are several food stations all over the place. One had salads and condiments, one was breads and pastries, international flavours, world kettle, pasta station, American etc.
So I start walking around trying to read the signs above and bumping into people every few seconds because the stations were spread out sort of like pepperoni is on pizza ;) There was no flow and this created traffic jams all over. But ok, I wasn't super bothered by this. Cabanas has a better flow.
Then I noticed that most and I do mean most dishes were near empty or empty. Pizza dish? Empty. Mashed potatoes? Empty. I do understand this was crazy embarkation day lunch (around 2 pm at this point) but come on. It took us 20 min to load up our plates. All I can think of is that they must have way less people working there than on DCL. Cabanas while also very busy on the first day, everything was replanished quickly.
Food variety was very good overall in the Windjammer. Taste was ok, nothing amazing, good variety, but I did not find shrimp like in the cabanas or sushi. Two items I really like. It's ok, slightly annoyed at this point (and it takes a lot to annoy me ;) )I looked at DS and said: we are not coming here again for lunch. DH pointed out it's probably better after the first day.. well it wasn't. We tried it again for one of the breakfasts and another lunch. Slightly less busy and the dishes were at least half-full but overall the Windjammer was a place I avoided.
I would imagine dinner isn't busy and I should have gone in there to check it out then, but we didn't eat any of the dinners in there.
There was an outdoor seating area in the buffet , but it was maybe 69 that first day and cloudy so it wasn't a great option. Oh and no utensils on the tables, had to go back again and search for them, they were in bins near the food stations.
In addition to the Windjammer, just like on DCL they had one main dining room restaurant open for breakfast and lunch, but with more limited hours. We had breakfast in the Grande restaurant one morning and it was very good, tasty and fast service.
Then there is Cafe @Two70, my fav spot to have breakfast and lunch. It was next to a venue called Two70 which was an incredible space. It served many purposes but during breakfast and lunch you could sit in there and eat while enjoying the wall-to-wall ocean view from the very back of the ship.
Breakfast in Two70 had such items as egg on an English muffin, breakfast burrito, hot and cold cereals, yogurt parfaits, bagel bar with various fixings including smoked salmon and capers.
For lunch there was a variety of grilled sandwiches such as Rueben, Royal's famous roast beef sandwich with horseradish on a cumin roll, panini, wraps, soups and a salad bar. It was rarely busy in there and the food was tasty. Cafe at Two70 is another included option.
I believe the closest option to cafe Two70 on the Oasis class is Park Cafe.
There is also Sorrentos Pizza - it was on deck 4 of the Royal Esplanade.
Also included and I believe Sorrentos is on most Royal ships.
Cafe Promenade also in the Royal Esplanade is also included and you could get cold sandwiches and cookies there. I didn't have a craving for pizza once so I didn't try Sorrentos. It should be located on the pool deck in my opinion. Also included is a Dog House with various saussages, hot dogs and warm sauerkraut, grilled peppers and fried onions. Dog House is located inside the Seaplex centre, Oasis class has it too on the Boardwalk. I'm not a big hot-dog person but everything was actually very good there.
The options to eat seemed endless, as in addition to what I already mentioned, there were several specialty restaurants serving lunch and dinner.

DINNER - You had a choice of traditional, early or late dining and also MY TIME which we had and prior to sailing I was confused about because you still made reservations in the cruise planner for MY TIME, except you could eat a different time each night from 5:30-9:30 pm. I reserved some nights around 7 and some at 8 depending if we had other plans. In reality, we just showed up whenever we felt like it and we were seated within 5 min, but keep in mind we were a party of 2 or 3 when DS came with us, so if you are a party of 8, the wait may possibly be longer. If you were on traditional set times, you dined on deck 3 in either Grande or Chic dining room, your restaurant and table # would be printed on your Sea Pass, and each day you would have the same servers and table mates, but also same restaurant. No rotation here like on DCL.

With MY TIME, you dined on deck 4 in either Silk or American Icon Grill. Each restaurant had a different decor, we liked all of them but there was no elaborate theming and obviously no Disney music...
Unsure if we would do another Royal cruise before we went, I chose MY TIME to mainly try it out.
There was also MY TIME FAMILY dining where I think you dined at 5:45 with kids and 40 min into the dinner service kids got picked up by the adventure ocean staff. Similar to what DCL does at late dining only.

With MY TIME We ate in either Silk or American Grill and like I said we just ended up showing up whenever and being seated promptly. We were also asked which dining room we wanted to be in. The 2 restaurants are across from one another. Because we had MY TIME dining and dined in one of the 2 restaurants, and also had breakfast in the Grande dining room once as well as Chic, so we ended up eating in each dining room.

Now the 2 most important aspects: Food quality and service in the main dining rooms.
To my surprise, service was EXCELLENT. I was worried having different waiters each night thinking they wouldn't care but I have to say service was on par with DCL's in the main rotational restaurants. Not only were ALL our waiters super friendly, service was fast and efficient. We were always out of the restaurant within 1 hr 15 min. When I say "always" I mean 4 times, so again maybe we lucked out. Royal does say to allow up to 2 hours for dinner. Both DH and I commented that service in the main restaurants was top-notch and just as good as or maybe even better than DCL as we usually had really slow dinner service on DCL. Great but slow. Just no magic tricks or anything like they do on DCL on Anthem. We were ok with that.
Each night there was a different menu with some options that you could pay for, if you wanted. For example there was a NY strip steak and grilled shrimp entree on the regular menu, or there was a paid filet mignon and lobster option.
I will be honest, food itself was a bit of a let down in the main restaurants. I felt like everything was better on DCL. We tried some of the same appetizers like escargot or French onion soup, and it was just OK. There were a couple of things that were very good, like a crab cake appetizer. 90% of main dining room food was just OK. If I'm feeling generous and we are not a picky family nor are we foodies.
Steak I ordered was unedible.
My beloved crème brûlé desert that I love on DCL was not really good on Anthem. Looked the same, but didn't taste good. :confused3 Grand Marnière desert was better. Our waiters seemed genuinely interested in feedback and were always coming back and checking on us. We never left hungry, but no meal was a standout.
We ate at one specialty restaurant, Jamie's Italian. It was EXCELLENT. Food quality and taste and service. They make fresh pasta there on site everyday. Everything we ate at Jamie's was a definite step up from anything we had on DCL but again it's not an included option.
DH wanted to try one of the other specialty restaurants like Chops Grille but I wanted to experience the complimentary options first so the only specialty dinner we did was at Jamie's.
If it was a longer cruise we would have definitely tried Chops Grille which is a specialty steak house. Anthem also has a Wonderland specialty restaurant loosely themed after Alice in Wonderland, it's supposed to be an experience to eat there. I can't really explain it as we didn't but you can find info about it online. Izumi is a small sushi place ($).
There is also Johnny Rockets burger joint up on the pool deck where you could get burgers, fries and milkshakes for fairly nominal fees. We didn't try this either.
Overall Anthem of the Seas has more dining options than any DCL ship, and while the main dining rooms were pretty and service was great, food was nothing special. The Windjammer buffet food was OK but the layout and craziness of it was a turn-of. Loved Cafe Two70 in terms of food and ambiance of eating inside Two70. Beats anything on DCL.
One area which is also better on DCL in terms of convenience is the pool-side quick service. Other than Johnny Rockets which is a paid option on Anthem there was nothing like DCL has near the pools. I forgot to mention there is also a Solarium Bistro which was complimentary and open for lunch and dinner but it was in the adult only pool area. It's supposed to have healthier food options and it's a small buffet for lunch and salad buffet for dinner and a-la-carte entrees. Didn't get a chance to eat there, again there was only so many places we could try on a shorter cruise.

I apologize I didn't take many pics of the restaurants and the ones I did have people in it... but tnshsms has a nice trip report from the same cruise and she posted a lot of photos. Honestly though even if I had photos of the food, I can tell you everything looked great, but wasn't (in the main restaurants).
Below are a couple showing inside of the Two70 Cafe and Two70 where you ate, entrance to Jamie's Italian and Wonderland.
Doghouse was modeled after a NY street style hot dog cart.

Any specific dining questions, please ask.
I will write about the drinks and dreamworks character dining in a separate post.

we did our first non DCL cruise on the Oasis for podcast cruise last december. definitely things we liked, but it was a one and done for us. very shopping mall, very generic, although "fancy". will be interested to read your thoughts with you having kids!
I recently impulse-booked us a Southern Caribbean cruise on Royal because it was the perfect itinerary and a reasonable price. But now that I'm obsessively looking at photos of the ship (Freedom), the mall aspect is concerning me. The Promenade. Both DH and I avoid malls whenever possible, so we'll see. I hope it doesn't dominate the ship as much as it dominates people's review photos.

I don't know about Freedom, but Anthem's Royal Esplanade did not really look like a typical shopping mall... Yes it has shops, bars and cafes but it's a very pleasant and elegant area. Also, you could easily avoid it if you wanted to.
We didn't do much shopping, and really the only time I was down there was in the evening in the pub or another nightclub. For coffee drinks, you could go to Café Promenade which was in this area, or La Patisserie (served Starbucks) but I never did as I could get same specialty coffees in Café Two70 and there was also a Café inside the Windjammer Buffet. You could easily avoid the Royal Esplanade and even if to you it feels like a Mall, there were many other beautiful areas on this ship that you could go hang out in, and did not feel like a Mall. I love Disney Fantasy's atrium, but how much time did I actually spend there? It was always crowded with all the character lines around it.
The way I approached this cruise... how bad can it be? So I don't like the vibe on the ship, or whatever else, it is still a good value and at least I can say I tried something new and now I can say with certainty that DCL is (or isn't) better.
I also wanted to go to Bermuda, so if the Freedom cruise has a perfect itinerary - focus on that. Then if you actually end up liking the ship, bonus! Hope you have a great cruise, and if you go please come back and tell us about it :)

That's the best attitude.

I remember booking a balcony room on the Carnival Victory thinking: "If it's THAT bad, I'll have a balcony to sit on and I'll stare at the ocean." (I loooooove the ocean).

My wife and I were on the Freedom of the Seas in 2008. I thought that the Promenade was nice. It is much nicer than malls that are near me and it really is just a central location for the shops. They also added a few eateries in this space as well. It felt very open since the three decks above are open to this space. It can certainly be avoided if you want and I wouldn't want a room that overlooks the Promenade.

Enjoying your review. My family will be on the Oasis in a few weeks. We did RCI back in 2007, then 5 DCL since. Price has forced us to go back, though we are ready for something new. I'm approaching the trip with that in mind and your comments so far sum up my expectations.

It's funny, because we did this same cruise (Bermuda 4EVA!!) and I found the boarding process AWFUL! We meant to arrive right at open, but got about an hour behind due to traffic and my husband's inability to get out of bed on time. Mostly the latter but I digress. So we hit at the absolute peak, and I found it very disorganized - they checked us in, that was fine, but then we eventually figured out we had to sit in chairs. They were letting 2 rows of chairs go at a time, but people were sitting down randomly and sneaking past the chairs to board with the group that was currently boarding. No communication, no signage, nothing. We sat for quite a while because DH is a boy scout and wouldn't let me sneak, but of course the sneakers were delaying everyone who did wait >:(.

And then we got onboard and found everyone camping out in the buffet waiting for their rooms to open. Fortunately we had gone to sign up for the iFly before eating as we'd booked late, and by the time we got our food the clock struck 1 and all the campers cleared out. But the waiters were just wandering around, not saying anything to anyone, not helping find tables, nothing. Made me miss my DCL waitstaff!!

That is so strange - complete opposite of our Oasis/Allure experiences. I wonder if it's a FL vs NY/NJ thing. Our FL check in lines went so quickly. We headed upstairs where you have to get the muster bands for ALL kids before you can even get to a seat. The seats are divided by cruise level (first timers, gold, diamond, etc.) with signs above each group. The employees (FL retirees, perhaps?) are no-nonsense. You must sit in your group and you board that way as well. I was actually so surprised that it went so smoothly with all of those people boarding. Disney boarding in NYC was okay - it just seems the lines were SO long - don't think they had enough employees. I can't remember what Disney FL was like - probably okay. We do tend to arrive early.

To those who said that the RCCL ships look like shopping malls... Here's what the shopping mall looks like in my neighborhood:

So, yeah, I'd take the RCCL Anthem of the Seas "shopping mall" in a heartbeat! ;)

It's one of the silly things Disney people say like... nickel and diming... free soda, etc. The "Mall" on the ship is just as easy to avoid as the casino but it gives people something to dis. :-)

We did not experience any nickel and diming on Anthem, there were a couple things that had a fee and they don't on DCL, but our cruise was a solid $1800 less than exact same sailing on Disney Magic. I will address the things we paid for soon.

CHARACTER DINING ON ANTHEM OF THE SEAS

One of the experiences you can book in advance in your cruise planner just like on DCL is character breakfast. Except on Disney I don't think it's offered on a short cruise but I could be wrong.
This breakfast used to be complimentary on Royal, but at some point they started to charge for it. It's $10 a person and free for kids under 6. We booked this in the interest of "research", we wanted to see how it compares to the Disney Jr. breakfast we did on the Fantasy last October.
There were 2 times available, both on a sea day at 8 am. A bit early... but we booked it for day 5 which was the last day at sea. This did sell out by the way.
I read somewhere that the character breakfast has a chocolatey menu and made the mistake of telling DS who is a chocoholic... Naturally he was very excited.
Royal Caribbean has partnered with DreamWorks animation and so it's DreamWorks characters at the breakfast, but you won't know in advance which ones will be present.
When we got to our stateroom on embarkation day, there was an envelope there reminding us about the breakfast on Day 5.
It was being held in one of the main dining rooms - Chic.
On the morning of, we checked in with a crew member at the podium in front of Chic, but they couldn't find our reservation. They didn't give us any trouble though , just added our room# to what already looked like a long list of "missing" reservations.
When we walked in, there was cheery music playing. They had a DreamWorks backdrop set up for pictures, so I thought the characters don't come to the tables? Maybe they are too big?
I think whether they do or not, depends on the ship. All the kids were first called up to take a group photo.
After this the crew was dancing in front of the backdrop wearing cute chef hats and aprons. Then they announced Alex from Madagascar. When he first came out, he did a fun dance with them. It was cute.
After this they started to give out stickers that had Alex on it, and you could go up and take a photo with him once you received the sticker. On one hand it was nice because the photos would have a nice background instead of tables and people like on DCL. On the other hand, this took a while.
Finally King Julian also from Madagascar came out, same process. By then it was about 9:15 am, so I asked if more characters were coming , and I was told no, only 2. That was strange, I believe when I read reviews on Cruise Critic there are usually 3 characters. You could take your own photo with them, or have the ship photographer take one. Or both. They didn't sign anything that I could see, didn't see any children with autograph books.
Menu - they must have different variations of this, because much to my son's disappointment it was not "chocolatey".
When the server came around DS asked if they had chocolate pancakes (not on the menu), I didn't know he was going to ask. The server said he would look into it. Came back and said OK, but it will take a little longer. DS said no problem so we waited... and waited... but I have to say all our food took a long time too. This was the only time service was slow in the dining room and the whole experience was chaotic. Well for me and DH anyway as DS despite only seeing 2 characters and waiting 1/2 hr for his chocolate pancakes, was super happy.
Food was good once it arrived, same as I got in the Grande dining room for breakfast the day before.
All in all this was not the same character dining experience as in DCL.
And we had to pay for it. It wasn't expensive but not sure if worth any money. In my opinion they should have had at least 3-4 characters like on DCL but this would have taken forever. Again, it is possible Anthem does or this way, it is possibly different on other Royal ships, especially the Oasis class.
I would skip this next time, but having said that I would also skip it on DCL as well. It was also a very slow breakfast on the Fantasy.
The thing that was the most fun for DS and why he enjoyed it, was the music and dancing. Alex and King Julian were also very cute how they interacted with everyone. Bottom line though... this was one and done for my family :)

I agree with you. I remember that on the Victory you had to go through the casino to get pretty much anywhere... But going through the casino took less than 30 seconds to cross... I mean... I held my breath and 30 seconds later it was over.

If little things like that "ruin their cruise" I can't imagine how they can survive normal life with all its ups and downs.

Following along. We did Liberty of the Seas out of Galveston last year and it's interesting to read about others experienced on RCI. Looking forward to hearing about the rest of your adventure. :goodvibes

I won't do a post on the Casino Royale because there is nothing to compare it to on DCL, plus we don't gamble but I will say that it wasn't until day 4 of the cruise that my DH looking at the Cruise Compass (schedule) saw something about the Casino, looked at me and asked: "There is a Casino here???" :rotfl:
I said yes honey, there is a Casino on every cruise ship other than Disney. Anyway point being, it wasn't somewhere where you constantly had to walk by it, we had to go look for it. I went there to check it out, there is actually a stairwell from the Royal Esplanade to deck 3 where it is. I just walked through it and to my surprise didn't smell any smoke. Like any. And smoke bothers me a lot. I don't know if this is the norm or not, I mean it was about 10 am in the morning when I walked through it, but even in the evenings did not smell any cigarette smoke on the Royal Esplanade.

I prefer to say that the RCI ships are a cross between a shopping mall and Las Vegas resort :)
Oh don't say that! :scared: The main reason we're trying out Royal is because DH hated the Vegas vibe of NCL. I'm less picky, especially when the real point is the ports. He should be fine if we can find a quiet promenade deck somewhere. And the weather cooperates. It's when rain drives us inside that it's more difficult to avoid shops, no matter how upscale.

And yes, all the photos I've seen are on par with the malls we're used to. It's really not an aesthetic thing. It's that we're not there to shop and we generally don't associate shopping or malls with relaxing. They're errands.
