A little bit of Disney Cruise Line is going out to the deserts of Iraq on Saturday!
I "adopted" a couple of soldiers through Operation Military Pride and just received their names and addresses this week. I was putting together a small care package for each of them tonight, and I did a last run-through of their "wish lists" as I was packing the envelopes. I noticed that both had listed pens (you wouldn't believe how basic the items these poor guys need are! Lip balm, moist wipes, gum, & stuff like that). It struck me that every time we cruise, I add another DCL pen to my collection. So before I sealed the envelopes, I slipped in a few DCL pens for each of them. They probably won't even notice or care where the pens are from, but I like the idea of some of our pens, which have journeyed from Florida to Nassau to Castaway Cay to Chicago, continuing on their way to the Middle East and our brave soldiers. :D :D

A wonderful idea Barb. What is possibly more American than the Mickey himself? As a military wife (who's a lucky wife with her husband home beside her) I applaud your dedication to our fighting men and women!!!!! I know they'll appreciate all of your love and care.

Inkkognito, How long did it take to receive the name and addresses of your adoptees? Our family requested an adoptee a while ago and never heard a word.

I think it's great, supporting the troops in anyway we can. How insignificant is a pack of gum to us? Put things in perspective, doesn't it?

Thanks for caring!

I ad to try twice, and it took a couple of weeks. The reason it didn't work the first time because when you submit their form, it tries to do it via your email program (i.e. Outlook). If you are using internet-based email such as Yahoo, it does not submit properly. I had to try again from work, where we have Outlook, and then I got my addresses in two weeks. I had said I could take up to three, so they sent me two.
I just got back from shopping this morning. It was lots of fun picking out necessities and plenty of goodies for them. :D :D Hubby and I are so lucky...you're right that it sure does put things in perspective when we're getting ready for a cruise and these poor guys are requesting lotion and baby wipes. Hopefully when they get their packages, it will remind them of how grateful and proud their fellow Americans are.

Another "Adopt" program is at www.operationmilitarysupport.com, although it looks like they are out of names, due to overwhelming requests. I have adopted 2 soilders, and I recieved the name immediately to my email. (although they have not sent me a first name for one, so I don't know if it's man or woman...always helpful when getting the care packages together!)

Barb, just a note on the side, you help me out last year when I was clueless before cruising by sending me a helpful email (obviously pre-Disboards days for me), but thanks! My DH and I used your tips and it truely made our time much better! Your trip reports and website are incredible! :D

I'm sure your "adoptees" will notice the pens! Great idea!
