Disney charging $5 for deliveries to resort??

So $5 per box? wow

We are hearing $5 per delivery. It's possible that either these boxes were huge so they charged per box for them, or that they were made over 20 separate deliveries. Possible if they ordered the items to be there before they showed up.

Sometimes I buy mickey ears or hair bows off etsy and I have them delivered in time for my visit. Is this what they will be charging for? I am in the UK, so sometimes I just have my stuff delivered to my resort

These were not groceries that are being discussed now ....
.... these are boxes delivered from a carrier as if they shipped to themselves.

This started well over a year ago ...
most publications said it was $5 per box and that seemed to apply to what I saw.

Description when it came out December 08 2016

Disney mail handling policies were recently revised to include a $5 handling fee for all outside packages addressed to guests. The revised policy reads as follows:

Guests staying at Walt Disney World resort hotels can receive mail throughout their stay. Occasionally, some Guests choose to ship items in advance of their vacation to help save luggage space.

If you intend to receive mail during your vacation, be sure the letter or package:
  • Includes the mailing address of your Disney Resort Hotel
  • Clearly features the word “Guest” on the front and the date of your arrival
Please note that a $5 per package handling fee may apply to all packages that are received through the Front Desk or are delivered to your Disney Resort hotel room.

Back in 2009, Disney previously implemented package handling fees for convention resorts.

Amazon's expansion into delivery of grocery and other retail products has undoubtedly fueled this move. Resort package volumes continue to rise, along with the accompanying handling, storage and room delivery costs.

These fees reportedly do not apply to personal items handled by resort bell services. Among the exemptions are grocery deliveries from services like WeGoShop and Amazon Prime Now, Owner's Lockers, motorized scooters and stroller rentals. Packages shipped to resorts using major freight carriers like UPS, FedEx and US Postal Service are subject to the storage and handling fees.

I would assume that items ordered from etsy would be shipped via the US post office, UPS or FedEx. If you order Mickey ears from 5 different etsy shops they would be mailed separately and each would incur the $5 fee. If you order 5 Mickey ears from one etsy shop and they are shipped in one box there would be just a single $5 charge. They have been charging $5 per package for this type of shipment (mailed/shipped by a third party carrier such as the US post office, UPS or FedEx) for the past year. At the resorts with a convention center they've been charging a handling fee for many years.

Now, they've extended the fee to goods that are delivered to the resorts by the business itself (e.g. Garden Grocer, Safeway). However, it is a flat fee of $5 per delivery rather than per box or bag.

So I guess since last trip Safeway delivered right to my room (they called me and I gave my room number), this doesn't apply. Not that $5 is a big deal, but I'm using Safeway again next month (just had them deliver to my house yesterday) and I'll just have them bring it to the room again. Worth a big tip if you ask me!
I noticed the Safeway website says their drivers are not allowed to accept tips. I was going to try to meet our delivery by the lobby/parking if that's the case, because I would hate for someone to carry all our groceries to the room if they can't accept a tip for the extra trouble! But in your experience they will accept the tip? I will happily pay it either way, but especially if they can bring the food right to me!

Do you know how early you need to place an order for Safeway? For example, how many hours in advance of delivery? I was thinking of having my order ready to in the cart and placing it when I arrive at MCO. I was hoping that I could get it a couple of hours later. My flight will be arriving at MCO at 6:15pm.
I would definitely place the order ahead of time. You can select your delivery window in advance, there's no reason to wait. And from their website I don't think you could get it in a matter of hours most of the time anyway:

"Can I get delivery the same day?
Yes, we have Same Day Delivery most days. Submit your order by 8:30 am for delivery between 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm. For earlier Same Day Delivery, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, submit your order by 3:00 am. (Note: All times listed are local to your area.)"

If you insist and pay cash, and let them know that it is between you and the driver, I am sure most would be more than happy to accept it.

Yes, I gave him a $5. He accepted it with no issues.

I definitely would suggest placing a Safeway order at least a few days in advance, to reserve a time slot (for me it’s usually the first evening). You can always go back and modify the order without losing your delivery time.
