Disney cels

My father in law is about to redistribute some disney cels to all the siblings since they are just sitting in his house that has mildew issues. Just wondering if any disers know if they can be worth something. Of course to me they are priceless either way. He has some from Jungle Book, Rescuers, and Little Mermaid. Do you know if they still sell these at Disney??

Do you know if they are originals or limited editions or sericels? A sericel isn't worth that much, whereas an original can be worth quite a bit. A limited edition is in between.

Yes, if they are original production cels they are probably worth something.

We have quite a few cels that we've purchased either at the parks or Disney Stores. Most of the cels you can buy are limited edition reproductions of actual cels. These are usually stamped with a number and a little Disney logo. I'm guess the ones you have are probably not the actual originals they used to make the movies. Those are very valuable and very rare.

The limited edition reproductions do tend to increase in value since they only make a certain number and then they go out of print. You can probably check around on EBay to see if any are for sale and get an idea of pricing.

There's a piece of advice I once received from an art auctioneer. You should only buy art because you like it. It's not a very reliable investment. Certain pieces don't always hold their value and you never know if you'll find an interested buyer when you're ready to sell. I would definitely take any cels your father-in-law wants to give you. Hang them on the wall and enjoy them.

Not necessarily. I have one in my bathroom. My brother in law has several. In the 1970s you could buy them at Disneyland for a few dollars. Mine was purchased at WDW in the late 1980s for a few hundred dollars - in is frame. Their value is determined by a number of things - the movie its from (mine is from Robin Hood - it isn't very valuable - Snow White or Cinderella or even Little Mermaid may be). The subject of the drawing (a major character is more important than a minor one, a recognizable scene more important than something you can't place), and, of course, the condition of the cel.
