Disney Cancels Next Launch Of Cruise Ship Magic
At Least 85 Passengers Sick On Current Magic Cruise

Disney Cruise Line officials canceled Saturday's scheduled launch of the cruise ship Magic after more passengers contracted a flu-like illness, according to Local 6 News.

Officials made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

At least 85 people on the Disney cruise ship contracted the virus this week even after the vessel was scrubbed because of an earlier outbreak.

The ship was disinfected Saturday after 275 people became sick on the Magic's last seven-day trip. The illnesses are believed to be caused by a "Norwalk-like" virus, one of the most common gastrointestinal viruses.

Local 6 News reported that passengers scheduled to sail on the ship Saturday will be offered refunds or holiday exchanges.

About 2,400 passengers and 950 crew members are aboard the current Magic cruise, which left Saturday night from Port Canaveral on a Caribbean tour. The 964-foot ship spent Tuesday at Grand Cayman.

Norwalk-like viruses are spread through food and water or contact with infected people and can cause diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting for up to two days.

A cruise, where hundreds of passengers and crew mingle in close quarters for days or weeks, can provide ideal conditions for a virus to spread.

A Norwalk-like virus also is suspected of sickening more than 500 passengers and crew aboard the Holland America cruise ship Amsterdam the past few weeks. A 10-day cruise was canceled last week to allow time for a thorough decontamination of the Amsterdam.

The virus is named for a outbreak in Norwalk, Ohio, 30 years ago.

Local 6 News reported that the Disney cruise ship Wonder will launch as scheduled Thursday.

imgoingtodisney will miss her cruise! :( I feel so bad for all of the 11/30 sailers that had planned so long for this trip.

All that planning for naught.

Oh, dear. I was wondering if this was imgoingtodisney's cruise . . . :( :( :(

Oh well, at least now she will have one less thing to worry about. She's NOT going on the cruise. And knowing Disney's customer service, I'm sure they will come up with some type of compensation.

Poor i'mgoingtodisney, though, used a lot of DVC points--let's see if DVC does the right thing (no flames please, I'm a DVCer myself)--she was worried about having to spend a bundle of points by next June for cancelling within a week of using the points. I think they should just restore the points.
What a nightmare! Can you imagine planning for so long, being 3 days out and this happening? Airfare too! What an endorsement for buying trip insurance!
