Disney By the Numbers April 2025 Exercise Challenge

Congratulations to me for turning Blue and to PollyannaMom for being the first to reach Orange!

🎆🎆🎆

Disney fireworks are a longstanding tradition, with Disneyland starting shows in 1956. Reportedly The Walt Disney Company ranks second on the list of US fireworks purchasers (behind the US military), to the tune of about $50 million per year.

Over the course of 18 minutes, the Happily Ever After show at the Magic Kingdom uses about 640-680 shells. It's estimated that each performance costs $40,000 to $50,000.

Congratulations to piglet1979 for turning Blue, and to Raya for turning Orange!

Happy Friday, and time for some superlatives from Walt Disney World!

Tallest attraction?
Expedition Everest, at 199.5 feet, just edges out the Tower of Terror

Fastest attraction?
Test Track, at up to 65 miles per hour. Guardians comes in at 60 mph, and Tron at 59 mph.

Longest attraction?
The American Adventure at 28 minutes, 30 seconds. I would have guessed Rise of the Resistance, but I guess they don't count the pre shows as part of the ride?

Shortest attraction?
Barnstormer, at about 63 seconds.

Oldest attraction?
The Roy O. Disney locomotive was built in 1916, but it was taken off site in 2024 for a long overhaul/refurbishment. Still on-site, the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel was originally made in 1917. As far as Disney-specific attractions, the Carousel of Progress dates to the World's Fair in 1964-65.

Congratulations to Twilight Sparkle for turning Purple, to ShannyMcB for turning Blue, and to me and the TEAM for turning Orange!

I love snacking at Disney. Churros? DLR sold 4.4 million in 2018. Mickey bars? More than a million a year. Mickey pretzels? DLR sold 890,000 in 2018.

And as far as snacks go, one of the most fun things about visiting the Tokyo Disney Resort was all of the various popcorn flavors. Right now, the TDR website lists 11 flavor options at Tokyo Disneyland and 9 flavor options at Tokyo DisneySea!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Smith and piglet1979 on turning Orange!

Did you know that the opening-day ticket prices for Disneyland were $1 for adults and 50 cents for kids? For the rest of the year, adults paid $2.50 to enter, and parking was 25 cents.

But guests had to pay extra to experience attractions. Adult ticket prices were 10 cents for A tickets, 25 cents for B tickets, and 35 cents for C tickets. Kids' tickets ranged from 10 to 25 cents. Disneyland introduced a ticket book a few months after opening (in October 1955), which cost $2.50 for adults, $2 for "juniors," and $1.50 for kids.

When MK opened in 1971, admission to the park for adults cost $3.50, but like Disneyland, guests had to pay separately for most attractions.

Congratulations to Raya for turning Purple, as well as sincere wishes for a quick recovery!

I was reminded of RunDisney recently. As many as 170,000 runners participate in RunDisney races each season. This past January, more than 30,000 runners took part in the WDW Marathon.

The "Dopey Challenge" requires runners to complete the four WDW races (the 5K, the 10K, the half marathon, and the full marathon) over the four-day WDW marathon weekend. That's 48.6 miles of running! 362 people have achieved "perfect Dopey" status, meaning that they have completed all four races every year for the eleven years since the Dopey challenge was introduced.

But you don't have to be an avid runner to participate in runDisney events. They require a minimum 16-minute-a-mile pace, which I know from experience means you can walk briskly a good part of the way!

Did you know you can't take a heating pad on any of the Disney cruise ships? They're considered a fire hazard.

Yes, anything with a heating element is likely to be confiscated (including things like hair dryers or straighteners). Ships are terrified of fires! The funny thing is that the list of prohibited items also includes appliances like microwave ovens, toasters, and rice cookers. Never thought of taking those types of things on my cruise vacation!

Another 60. Had a weird conversation with a trainer at the gym yesterday that left me reassessing my gym goals and wondering about finding a new place. Maybe I'll try swimming? Some sort of martial art? Wish I could just move to Disney and walk the parks all day to get my exercise in. sigh.

Since Sophy brought up the races - I've run two Disney half marathons. One number most folks wouldn't guess is 4:30AM, which is the absolute latest you can leave your hotel room to make it to the starting line on time. Another crazy number - the first resort hotel to the starting line bus leaves at 3:00am.

Hi all! I knew this month would be crazy, but it’s all been fun. My husband and I are on a cruise - our first vacation together in over two years! Since our granddaughters came to live with us, life is upside down. Anyway, we’ve done a ton of walking this week - this ship is huge! I’ll add 250 minutes for the last week.
