I was wondering if anyone knew of situations where Disney has bought points back directly from a member. (I am not talking about ROFR.) I ask this because of recent discussions my mother has had with DVC regarding selling her points due to the new smoking policy.

Thanks,

I've heard of them approaching people when loans become delinquent. Usually the price is a very severe reduction over the current resale ROFR thresholds. We're talking about an offer in the mid-50s for points they would re-sell at $85+

There was a thread that someone started about their mother calling MS to ask about selling and they said $55/pt, the check would be in the mail within a very short time. Now the OP didn't go into details(like perhaps deliquency or needed cash faster than a resale) but was very angry at MS to come up with that number, but if that is the price they buy points back, they were just answering the mother's question.

If our mother decides to sell, she would certainly come out ahead by using one of the resale brokers that specializes in DVC instead of selling to them direct. Especially if she has points at somewhere like BCV where the resale is almost the same as buying from Disney. Now if it was VB (which typically runs quite a bit less) she would need to do some calculations to see what her net would be after the broker's commission as it might be a wash situation depending on the number of points involved.

I believe my mother was offered $53 a point but I haven't seen the letter yet. Her points are at Boardwalk, long since paid off, and she paid somewhere in the mid sixties for them if I remember correctly. Smoking is, unfortunately, an important part of her life. It really is a shame that a senior citizen who has made Disney her Home Away From Home is faced with this situation, and DVC's offer simply added insult to injury.

She'd better get used to it, because in a year or two, the state wide bans will be in effect in most states.

I'm in Ohio and the new outdoor mall in my town has gone smoke free outside, removed all the standing ash trays(I have seen people smoke before), this also includes the parking lots. We had an issue on the ballot in November which passed, the state finally has come up with rules and fines. As an ex-smoker, I am not sure what to think of all this.

Chris:

I was sad for you and your mom when I read this. The new policy only impacts me indirectly (as I don't smoke and neither do any of my immediate family members). But I can't help but be sad for people who are negatively effected by this, especially so much so that they need to sell. I guess I just wanted to say "I'm sorry" and let you know that not all Board members are doing a happy dance over the new policy which is causing you misery.

At the least I think DVC should have done way more notice. Like maybe a year. I know that it probably wasn't practical for Disney...but still...

Good luck. I hope you mom gets lots of $$$ in her resale.

Amy

Don't forget that this is a Walt Disney World restriction not just DVC. Smoking will still be allowed in designated areas. Here in RI we have had no smoking in public buildings for several years now. There is no smoking in any workplace in the state except for one casino and that may soon change. When the law was first enacted it created an uproar but now everyone just seems to accept it. It is too bad that smoking is such an important part of her life . As a former smoker I know it is not easy to give it up but when I look at my beautiful grandchildren I am so glad I did as I hope to have more time to spend with them at my Home Away From Homes. I would second the thoughts of those who say to use a timeshare broker to sell the points if she really feels that strongly about it. At least with DVC there is the chance to come out ahead when you sell your points where other timeshares are selling for pennies on the dollar for what they originally sold for. I am actually surprised that Disney does any direct buy backs and while the offer is not that great it is probably the fastest way to get rid of something you don't want.

A reminder...smoking discussions are NOT permitted on the DVC forums. This thread needs to return to the topic of DVC re-purchase offers or be closed.

$53 point seems in line with what has been offered in the past, judging by previous posts here. Personally, I would go through a broker/ There are several reputable DVC brokers, including the Timeshare Store.

Why would anyone sell to Disney at a fraction of the price you could get in the resale market? Unless you were selling because you needed to get your money quickly for some reason... Otherwise, you're better off paying a commission and selling through a reseller than selling to Disney direct.

Thanks for all your responses, and especially Amy for your kind words :goodvibes As far as the ban in public buildings, etc, that is not a problem for her because she is only in those places for brief periods of time, but it is completely different when it is in her living quarters, and no one can answer any questions about locations of the smoking areas. She abides by the rules, which is why she must sell.

The reason Mom considered going directly through Disney was because I suggested looking into it first since I didn't know if it was even an option . As you probably know, elderly people are prime targets for scams and I wanted to keep it simple for her if possible, but obviously not at a cost of thousands.

Given that this announcement was made a mere 10 days ago, I would personally recommend a little patience. Unless there are other reasons for selling (which weren't mentioned in any of your posts), it seems wise to wait a few more weeks for additional details to be released.

I hope this won't be considered a smoking discussion, but I wanted to point out that nicotine replacement (such as nicotine gum, nicotine inhaler or a nicotine patch) may be an option for some smokers who want to spend time in places that prohibit smoking. Nicotine inhalers most closely replicate the experience of smoking, so they may work best for someone who isn't trying to quit.

I'm not sure what the commission would be to sell DVC through The Timeshare Store. There is another broker who sells DVC with a discount commission structure; his website is www.reid4florida.com and he charges between $500 and $995, depending on the number of points. I know some people have said he is slow in communication, but I haven't heard of other problems with him.

I don't smoke and STILL would not be in favor of taking a persons right to do so away..yes, people usually ruin it for themselves, smoking where they shouldn't.

Do you ever really think they will try this in non-US locations..:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Hey...lets do prohibition next, so there will be no drunken brawlers in the unit next to me, invading my space..calling my phone @ 1:30, 2:00 and 3:00 AM just being stupid. No the front desk...did nothing!!

Yea...now all we need to worry about is the "BAD Air" we all breath everywhere and all over the country..that no one gives a hoot about:headache: :headache:

BTW...Im hearing (from a Disney manager) that its a Fla. state law that a smoking location must be provided on resort premises...like the Marriotts are now doing since they went smoke-free rooms. So...who knows.

Also...IMHO...NO way they will take it away from the parks...Disney makes too much money from the majority of guests, who by latest poles, are visiting foreigners.
We should all know by now....... its always about the almighty $$$$$$$...
