My DS is 3 1/2 we will be going to Disney in Sept. He is potty trained but will not go in a public bathroom, don't know why! He will use the bathroom at someone's house and school, but not if we are out anywhere, he will hold it and make himself miserable. Any suggestions? Can I take him into the baby care centers, do they have a bathroom in there? Thanks for any ideas you can give me, I just don't know what to do.

I haven't been for several years, but the guide books I've read said that there are rest rooms at the Baby Care Centers.

Along the same topic, I was wondering if any of the rest rooms have the smaller sized kiddie potties? If so, where? And are the toilets automatically flushing??

My 2 yr old is aprehensive about using public potties. She gets very distracted/worried with all the noise. She will go in public if no one else is in the entire rest room (not likely at Disney!!). And the auto flush potties totally freak her out!

They do have blow up potties and we used to have this thing that fit on the rim of the seat, maybe you could get that and start using it at home? Another option being that he IS a boy is to pee in a bottle, in a stall, pour flush and throw out bottle? I have no other ideas, other then pullups?? Hope it works out!

I don't remember seeing any kid-size toilets in the parks, but they do have quite a few "family" restrooms. We used those whenever we could with our DS 3.5 and DS 1 on our recent trip. There is plenty of room in there (can fit a stroller, etc.), and since you are the only people in there maybe your DS would find it less intimidating than the stalls.

You'll be making plenty of bathroom trips since you'll be keeping DS well-hydrated in hot September! I'll bet your Disney trip will quickly cure his public-restroom-phobia! :)

Perhaps you could start practicing going other places now so he will be ready to go at WDW. Start easy and work up. Suggest that he go with you or your DH to the bathroom somewhere like the library. He just goes along while you "go". Invite him to try after a visit or two. Try going to places he likes to visit and after a few visit insist that he try to use the poty before enjoying the activitiy such as a happy meal at Mcdonalds or playing at the park.
You could also try the approach that WDW is Mickey Mouse's home so he will be just fine using the potty there. Don't forget the auto flushers! Stickers can cover the sensors pretty well.
Bribery might work pretty well at WDW too. A mickey bar after he goes potty.
If none of these work i would just put him in pull ups and try not to stress. After a while he won't be able to hold it and what will happen will happen. Just be prepared that it might set training back some when you get home.

Hi, I'm new here, but have done lots of research lately. I am almost positive that I read in a guide book (Disney w kids, 1999) that there were potty chairs in the baby center. I bet they'd let you put your potty chair there for the day too, if nothing else worked.

My ds went through this phase, and as I remember, it was fairly short-lived. I woud try to get those paper covers for the toilet seats, and tell ds that they're 'magic' and just like home.

Good luck!! And definitely get pull-ups for the parks. Imagine the rotten day if he got distracted and had an accident! Plus, he really can't be expected to 'hold it' in line forever, which I suppose he might have to. And if he's like my ds, he'll wait until your in line to get on some great ride with a full queue of folks behind you, and no way out!:D

we used a folding potty seat that goes on a big toilet for quite a long time when we were out, it seemed to give her a lot more confidence in a strange place.

it looks like this

i;ve no idea where you can get them in the USA, but if you could find one it might help

That is the thing that I was talking about, we got ours at Baby's RUs but i think they sell them at most baby stores, plus maybe also Wal-mart and ToysRUs

I just wanted to mention that the big separate bethrooms are "Companion Restrooms" at WDW and they are not on the maps. At MK, they are the only bathrooms that someone who needs to bring a wheelchair into the stall (or needs to bring a helper in with them) can use, so they are listed in the Guidebooks for Guests with Disabilities, but not elsewhere. The handicapped bathroom stalls at MK (and many at Epcot) are not big enough to bring a wheelchair in. MGM and AK are much better.
I'm not saying they can only be used by someone who hasa disability, just saying keep in mind that they are the only stalls in the whole park that some people are able to use.
I've been told that there are small child size toilets at the baby care centers. I'm pretty sure they would not let you bring your potty chair there to leave it (plus there is only one Baby Care Center in each park, so chances of getting there in time would not be too good). We've been to WDW many times and I've never seen any small toilets anywhere else.
Stickers for the self flush toilets are a great idea. Some of them are very sensitive to movement (especially by someone trying to keep balance). My DD's record is 12 flushes (she has cerebral palsy and is tall enough and unsteady enough to make it trigger on a lot of toilets). Someone suggested the inexpensive dots with easy off adhesive and someone else used a pad of post it notes.
We actually had one of those folding toilet seats for DD when she was smaller and it worked very well, even for a pretty squirmy kid. Another thing someone mentioned worked well for their son was floating targets made for toilet training. They are some sort of tissue paper stuff and the idea is to hit them and sink them. I have no idea where they got them, maybe Toys R Us, but the poster said they did get her son to use the toilet at WDW.

We just returned from a week in WDW...and with our 5 1/2 month old are pros at the Baby Centers...so we needed the baby facitilites, but we noticed that each center had nice restrooms....

This may help your little one at potty time. I also remember seeing a child sized toilet...not potty chair or seat, but a toilet in one of the Baby Centers...I think in the Animal Kingdom, but the bathrooms at the centers are a good way to go...much less traffic than the general public bathrooms around the parks.

The centers also are "homey" to a degree...rocking chairs, high chairs, TVs etc...which may put your child more at ease at potty time. When we used the center in AK and Epcot..we were the only people in there...so it was nice and quiet...didn't feel like we were in a very crowded public park just outside.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I will probably try out the baby center. That would be great if the have a child size toilet and it's quiet. I think he hates the public restrooms if they are crowded. I have received so much information from reading here. When we went to Disney when my DS was 8 months old I didn't even know about the baby centers

I'm one of the ones who walked around with a pocket full of post-it notes since DD HATES the automatic flush toilets. Post-it notes have worked for the last two trips and bandaids worked on the one before that. Although the bandaids worked well, they're harder to use, but the post-its are a breeze . Either way, we've never had the toilet flush on us when we weren't expecting it.

My son loves the baby centers, so I have been in every one recently. There is a small sized toilet in the MGM baby center - no regular sized ones in there, for parents to use. Animal kingdom's baby center is great - can bring the stroller in, but no small toilet.
We are just starting the potty training thing, and hope to try out some stuff we've learned here.
