Disney Announces New Toy Story Land for DHS

Alright, after further contemplation...

Let's remember what Toy Story Midway Mania is at its core. The story, as told by the Imagineers, is one day Andy decided to put on a circus midway underneath his bed. It draws extensively from the circus or fair concepts for inspiration.

I'm guessing that the boxy building to the mid left is TSMM. Here's why:

See how the other building to the far right is part of the new Slinky Roller coaster building? It clearly travel through it, and the offload unload area is serviced there. Other candidates are washed out because they have different theming like Al's Toy Barn or Woody's Roundup. Additionally, zooming in reveals something interesting...

The Midway/Circus theming is visible off of that building. Midway Mania is an obvious answer for why that exists there, especially off of the bulky buildings. If I had to guess, the new Midway looking facade falls around here (purple pin):

Any other ideas?

That sounds close, but this is how I see it...

This is almost definitely quick service food. Notice it's a lunch box with a thermos holding the roof (lid) up and there are tables out front.

It's being speculated that this is a restroom building since it's a close match to the one in Hong Kong. It looks pretty big to me, so there may be more in there.

This is exactly how I see it as well, with the exit likely through the toy barn.

The barn doesn't appear to attach to the TSMM building although it's possible. My thought is that the barn will be a shop which makes sense since it ties in with Al's Toy Barn from the movie.

In the most recent Jim Hill podcast he suggested that Toy Story Land is actually going in the LMA area instead of behind TSMM. I am not taking it as truth, but it is something to consider. I am still leaning towards the other location, but I can't rule this one out.

That's where I originally thought it might go, but I can't see how it fits with the artwork. I think the other location we've been discussing looks like a better fit. Maybe the LMA area would fit with the Star Wars land?

I think the reason people think this is the shape of the Back Lot Effects building. See the small connection between Sound Stage 1 and the Effects building it looks like the concept art. The problem with this theory is that if the building in the lower center of the TSL concept art is the new entrance to TSMM then it is completely removed from the original TSMM queue. Thinking about that it is possible that if track 3 is FP+ only a separate entrance could be used but that would be such an aggravation to guest I imagine "Sorry sir the FP+ line is way over there, this is the standby only entrance." I also don't see why they would go through the trouble of clearing out the backlot if nothing was going to go there.

So will they have to close down TSMM for a while for the que conversion? And for how long? Or maybe keep the new track open?

I think the barn will definitely be a gift shop and will likely be themed as Al's Toy Barn. As for my thought of it being the exit of the ride, note how the grey building behind the toy barn facade angles off towards the large building (which we are assuming is the ride building) until it disappears into the trees. It would certainly make sense for the ride to dump through a gift shop and if it was just a standalone shop I don't know that it would be shaped quite like that.

The current queue area for TSMM sits between the current tracks and the new track. If the toy box building were the new queue entrance it would be a trivial matter knock a hole in the back wall of the current building to connect to the existing queue area in the middle of the building.

I like that thought, makes a lot of sense.

NO - Jim Hill is wrong (yet again). First off - they are definitely going to incorporate it with TSMM - there's no way they would have it separate. I think the speculation that they are coming off the back of it is spot on. They'll likely take out the buildings that are The (closed) Jack Sparrow Show, (soon to close) One Man's Dream and (maybe soon to close) Little Mermaid, and that'll be the entrance area to Toy Story land, which will arch around the back of TSMM. It seems to me they wouldn't HAVE to close Little Mermaid - and since it's a rumor I'm going to assume for now it's not.

I did a quick sketch of measuring out 11 acres. Each box is about 1 acre. I assumed that the existing TSMM footprint didn't count in the 11 acres, but that might not be true. Either way, there's little option to make an 11 acre expansion which also incorporates TSMM. They can't go EAST of TSMM, since this is the GMR, and I'm assuming that isn't going anywhere. If you look at the area blocked out in red, there are really only three large buildings in this area, and all three were part of the Backlot Tour at one point or another. This area can be completely taken over by Toy Story Land and have very little affect on the park. In fact, Construction can commence on this area, and also have little to no affect on the park operations - whereas Star Wars land would likely impact at least SOME of the current show buildings.Toy story 11 acres.jpg

It makes me wonder - as was previously suggested by many - will they push hard to get the Toy Story land built in a couple years - so that as they have to start closing things to build Star Wars land, they can at least have THIS new land open to tempt guests to still come into the park. I know that's probably wishful thinking - but it looks to me like there should be nothing much holding up construction back here.

Thanks for taking the time to mark off 11 acres. It makes sense to me. I kind of think they won't close Little Mermaid, and that the current TSM is included in the 11 acres. If you moved the Mermaid acre and the one to the left of it on top of TSM, that's my guess as to how they will do it.

Regardless, it sure is fun to speculate about something new!

ETA: I sure do hope they are moving the TSM entrance to the back side. I don't like the walkway as it is now, running between TSM and GMR. It's claustrophobic. The artwork they released shows big, open walkways. I hope that's how it really turns out!

One problem with theming a gift shop to Al's Toy Barn - the concept of the land is that you've been shrunk to the size of a Toy. That goes along with that the snack shop is a giant lunch box/thermos. Not sure how they would make Al's Toy Barn match the theme.

That's very true. They would have to make Als toy barn twice the size it would be for a human.

The concept art shows a toy barn. Both Andy and his toys are certainly familiar with Al's Toy Barn from the constant commercials. They could be playing by having their standard Fisher Price generic toy barn be Al's Toy Barn.

That's what it looks like to me -- a Fisher Price Little People barn. It looks like it even has a handle on top.
