Disney and VMK - Denial of Service?

Have there been denial of service attacks for VMK and the Disney site in general lately? I've been having various trouble accessing those sites a lot ever since the demise of VMK was announced. I've never been a victim of such an attack before so I don't know the scope of the trouble such an attack causes.

My secondary questions are, just what is a denial of service attack and how does one happen? I'm assuming a denial of attack is illegal so I'm just looking for simple answers.

Simple answer about a DOS attack is that a LOT of computers start making requests to a single site and that site is unable to respond to real users of that site.
